I was recently in Bkok and Pattaya and witnessed firsthand the fallout from SARS. Near empty plane and breezing through immigration in less than 2 minutes.
I didn't 'take advantage' of the poor poor Thai people the way they sometimes take advantage of Farang people but here's what I noticed:
It's easier to bargain the TGs down from their ridiculous asking prices of 2,000+ . I got the nicest girl for 1,000 LT and she stayed with me for about 4 days and nights. To her credit she was too shy to even bring up cash, her friend was the one playing hardball. Did I take advantage of her? I don't think so. I took her shopping, to the movies, bought her a shitload of cosmetics and generally gave her a lot of extras that weren't expected.
I also found it easier to bargain at MBK. Got my favourite Ikepod watch there for just 1,500B. They were asking for 3,000B!
Of course this is just a temporary state of affairs and much as I like the absence of large crowds and demand for TGs in LOS I do hope things get back to normal ASAP.
Then I'll just have to bargain harder

Not a nice topic if like me you happen to live in one of the worst affected places - HK. İYeah, it may have slackened off demand in Bangkok but its affected the lives of millions of people - jobs gone, economies devasted not to mention hundreds dead - like the 35 year old widowed female doctor here who died yesterday. İShe volunteered to work on the SARS ward. I shall hopefully be making it into Bangkok at the beginning of July and I won't be looking for any special prices - just looking to have a relaxing time and treating everyone with the respect they deserve.

Wow, tropical, that's actually good stuff right there, though some people may still dump on you. I hope they won't because it's a point people should think about.
Certainly you'd have to be a really callous bastard to make a point of sex-touring a country where women are prostituting themselves solely to avoid starvation just because it's the absolute cheapest thing going. Maybe that's too strong, but I know I couldn't respect a guy who did that.
But at what point do financial considerations become too important, too damning? I don't know if I can answer that, don't know if anyone can really. Sure, you can enjoy five or ten girls over here for the price of one with the same looks in the West. But is that unreasonable or the sign of a "user"?
I don't think so. And I can only justify that by saying that it seems that the girls who service farang do better financially then the girls who service the locals. So to whatever degree the farang's money coerces a girl into that part of the trade, it's probably better than if she was left to the wages she have from only Thai clients.
Take it further and consider that, yes, the girls are in the trade to make money, but not just so they can eat or their families can eat for the most part. I believe that quite a lot of the girls, perhaps even a vast majority, are "looking farang" now because it buys a better lifestyle than their factory job or office job or retail job.
Maybe I'll get hit over the head for saying that. But I know a couple of girls, friends of my girl at home, who've chucked the 9-to-7 and gone to look farang just because the money is out there. Maybe, maybe it would stop if all the farang stayed home and there was no more incentive. But this isn't some "white man's burden" thing where we all beat our breasts and shout 'mea culpa' because the girls are making this choice for themselves.
Certainly the Thai economy isn't hot shit, but compared to Laos or Cambodia or Myanmar it's pretty good. The straight jobs are still out there if the girls want them and want to live the lifestyle those salaries can buy.
So tropical, to answer what you infer, no I don't think you need to drop western-escort money on your Thai darling in order to feel okay about letting yourself off the moral hook. They aren't kids, they can weigh the risks and rewards and make those choices for themselves. Morally, it's all good if you ask me.
On the other hand, anybody who deliberately and with malice wishes for SARS or economic devestation or anything like that to come along and drive the price of a bang down to 3 dollars or some gratuitous self-serving crap like that is just warped and deserves a taste of his own sick imagination. It's all good as it is, a beautiful young lady or 3 for a few hours for the price of a few hours labor back home. Why jinx it hoping for tragedies in the pursuit of greater buying power? That sort of thing is just crass.

I can't speak for others, but I have never had much interest in Western prostitutes, and I don't think that would alter even if they charged Thai prices. When I lived (& earned) in the West, the cost of local P4P services was not an important factor.
At present, I am not especially interested in 'ladies from my own country', even if they come free of charge.
Anyone who is interested solely in banging the maximum number of women at the cheapest possible price would almost certainly be better off somewhere like Cambodia.
I think that for most of us who enjoy the Thai P4P scene, price is certainly not the most important factor. Not by a long way. If you want to know why that is... well, isn't that what most of this forum is about?
