but is it a case of A/C and A/C?. i don't know for sure, not knowing anything about the motor trade, but could it be that motor companies cater for different countries? i drive a Ford and living in the UK,i feel there is not much use for A/C,weather compared to other places not so hot,so windows open does if for me. i have a heater in the car(hot/cold)but not what i consider A/C. do they provide good ventilation in countries which need it more? i know that whenever i have been in a taxi in LOS,the A/C has been on,but i wanted the window open but always got a mouthful from the driver if i wound the window down.

Dear B. B.: ÝSince you have accused me of being a liar, let me point out a couple of things. 1. ÝI said the "temperature on the highway during the summer will be in the 160-180 range" Ý(Yep, I reread it just now and that is sure what it says!) 2. ÝI have read your link and it says: "All of these countries have recorded maximum temperatures of over 120 F - the actual surface temperatures may surpass 150 F." Ý The countries the article is referring to are those on the Arabian Peninsula, of which Saudi Arabia is one. 3. ÝSince I referred to HIGHWAY temperatures which are always higher than normal recorded temperatures due to the fact that they are dark in color and asphalt by construction and heat retentive by nature, HIGHWAYS ARE HOTTER. I strongly suggest you read your reference materials prior to posting something and calling somebody a liar. ÝI, for one, don't appreciate it. There is a new word under consideration for inclusion in the dictionary. .....IGNORANUS..............A person who is both stupid and an asshole. You sir, are a perfect example of the new word.

When I drive down the freeway with my windows up in nice weather, it's because I'm trying to keep all the fumes out. ÝHowever, many Americans drive with their windows up and yet have the A/C set for "fresh" air, which seems to defeat the whole purpose IMO. Ý Where I live, it get's above 100-F for part of the year, and when it does I have a hard time not using the A/C to cool things off. ÝIt's one thing if you're just heading to the local recreational area on the weekend, but if you're on your way to work you really don't want to show up all sweaty and with your hair all whipped up. ÝAt least I don't. -PS NOTE: For those who are unfamiler with standard temperature readings, chuck is indeed right. When you hear about the high/low temperature for the day, they're talking about the air temperature only, and in the shade at that! Black pavement in the sunlight is a very different story.

When I read your post it said, and I quote: "I am in Saudi where the air temperature on the highway during the summer will be in the 160-180 degree farenheit range." Where does asphalt surface come into play? ÝAll I hear is air temperature. Ý"...the air temperature on the highway..." ÝAmazing huh? ÝSo it is not that you are a liar, you just cannot convey your argument effectively. ÝI am so sorry for that. BB

Even at my advanced stage in life I can be amazed at sheer stupidity. Ý Tell me this. ÝIf the temperature of a very large surface is in the range of 160-180 degrees, what will the "air temperature" be immediately above the surface? ÝWhy don't you try this little test. ÝIf you are anywhere near a very hot spot in the world, go to the highway in the middle of the day and just stand there. ÝIf you can tell me that your feet are 180 degrees and your head is 136 degrees, then your argument has some merit. By the way, have you chosen to ignore your own link that said air temperatures often are in excess of 150 F in the Arabian Peninsula? ÝIt was your link! ÝI did not post it but I did read all of it. ÝYou posted it as proof of your argument yet you choose to ignore parts of it. ÝCare to explain that away??? It is late now. ÝI have had friends bombed last night and only use the board for entertainment and a diversion. ÝI truly enjoy a little banter here and there to take my mind off problems but I prefer to do it with somebody that has a degree of intelligence. You, sir, do not fall into that category. TWD: ÝWe could prepare your imaginary green eggs and ham on the highway over here. ÝThat's if we could get the ham!!!!!

Let's think about what makes air "hot." Water, or humidity if you prefer is the answer. The only way that the air temperature above an object can be directly influenced is if the humidity level is sufficient. Along the coastal areas of Saudi Arabia this is very possible, but in the "middle of the desert," as in your location, this is not the case. The air temperature would actually be between 100-120, not nearly the 160-180. I'm sorry ec but this is my field. The article in question speaks to 150F air above paved surfaces given proper conditions, i.e. humidity of 50% or greater. Sorry. Play again please.
