the english papers in los rarely prints reports of local crime - guess it's just part of their patriotic duty to hide dirty laundry from their readers who are mostly farangs.
same as the 7.00am english news on fm 105 which gives the price of tapioca or rubber, tourist arrival figures, increasing sme's, etc...

I agree he was lucky. Sukhumvit Soi 33 is a much classier and nicer area where to be attacked.
I wouldn't want to be thrown together with the low class tourists that get killed in the highway area. Better for the corpse to wait 5 hours in the more quiet surroundings and comfy white walls of a Sukhumvit condo than against the more noisy highway walls.

Stabbed three times...
Actually getting stabbed to death is generally a matter of bad luck or getting done by a pro. ÝMost people get stabbed 10s of times and if no arteries or vital organs are hit they are little worse for the wear. ÝI've read many accounts of multiple stabbings (20+) where the person doesn't even end up in critical condition. Ý(OJ was hacking away for many minutes - with a f_cking sword for chrissakes- and goldman had many wounds that indicated that he was fighting hard for a while before the incapacitating wound)
Someone who knows what they are doing with a knife is very dangerous - but most people have never attacked anything more than a pizza. Ý

On my first trip to LOS 4 years ago, I arrived at dead of night, around 1 am. Cautiously wheeled my trolley to the exit door where a staffer in blazer ofered to put me in a cab to my hotel. I felt reassured but then when eventually 2 guys got into the front seat (driver and his friend) I was filled with slight misgivings. But they never spoke to each other through the 30 minute or so ride. When they came to a traffic signal which was blinking red, they halted although there wasn't a soul on the road, then moved on. When we finally reached my hotel (to my relief),they got out and helped me with my baggage. LOS had won me over for life.
I tend to believe that any reports of fights or stabbngs or shootings of tourists must be linked somehow to some event or behvaiour on the tourist's part. A robbery -- I think -- must be very, very rare. And in any event of robbery further harm can be prevented -- I think -- with a little smile and indicating that they can take what they want. If you try to fight back you must expect anything to happen -- as is the case anywhere in the world.

Agreed, very rare, I would think be a little more to it .. he either hinted he had a lot more than 5000 bt on him, upset someone very badly, was screwing the guys wife, or ran into a desperate junkie at the wrong time .... probably the fact that it even made the news, signifies the rarity of such attacks in LOS -

I feel safer in Thailand than I do at home in America, even walking on Suk. late at night which I do quite often.
The worst I saw was the two bastards who stole my TGs cell phone. They were riding on a motorcyle and we were walking. Of course the lady was wearing her phone on a cord dangling from her lovely neck. It happened very fast, but looked like a crime of opportunity as there were quite a few people around.
Of course, being the stupid chivalrous farang that I am, I bought her a new phone the next day. After all, she was my favorite of many TGs and I did manage to avoid the monthly "support" payments...hahaha

True , fleshwounds do not kill.
True , knife really is something what you do not want to meet if You have even slightest shred of brains in Your head , if the other guy knows what to do with it.
Actually I'd say that 85 % of peoples has ZERO KNOWLEDGE about what is the true devastating power of the knife.
Little remark about that bad luck/ pro thing:
Under persons ribcage is soft , triangular area (from fourth button of the shirt to pants pockets ) .
If pointed object ( knife) pierces persons abdomen area , it takes only half an inch to start shockreaction and if the stab goes in about 2 inches , stomach or intestines are receiving it , not immediate death , but can cause poisoning condition / shock.
Bladder has even stronger effect .
If blade is swung upwards it can slide behind the ribcage, triple targets are found heart / lungs.
Both arms have several veins which can bleed You to death.Some of them pretty obviously findable.
It's usual that police interrogation reports start with words :" I did not mean to , but..."
