Actually, it turns out that the Government dropped visas on arrival for CIS (Russia) in 12/2001. Now, two senators are lobbying for the return of this privilege and the PM and the FM are preparing to make a state visit to Moscow (which I think has little to do with crime, unless you count the Shin Group.)
One of the senators is son of a famous general of the 60s who made a fortune taking CIA money to supply Thai troops to fight in the "secret war" in Laos. Took the money, created a "paper army" of phantoms and pocketed the cash. Our Tax Dollars At Work.

Lothar was screwed over by his wife and accountant only when he opened himself up to it by overestimating his influence and getting into a conflict with the wrong folks. Then when the sharks were circling (and Lothar was already deported) his wife and co-conspirators moved in for the kill. No need to harm him physically, just shut him out.
Methinks I will withhold comment on Wolfgang. (I did see some bright orange, flickering light there that is emitting some heat.)
