Quote: from Vancouver Jay on 10:41 pm on Oct. 20, 2003 If this is the New Bangkok, I kind of like it. The beggars and their scumbag handlers are gone, the sidewalks are patched up and free of crap-merchants and there's more totty walking around than you can shake a stick at. Plus you don't have to shove 53 touts, motof_cks and assorted bottom-feeders out of the way to see it. This, to me, is progress. Some may object that some of the charm is gone, but that sort of shit-house nostalgia doesn't get very far with me. A clean, well-lighted place for whoremongering. Paradise.
i like it too.... but unfortunately it will all be back to normal i believe.... the government can't afford all these security and policing measures for too long... just long enough to make a good impression on the bigwigs who can help this country out economically and politically...

Had to smile wryly Thursday night walking from the Londoner to the BTS Station; usually outside Villa Market there are several sidewalk stalls selling flowers etc., all with very attractive displays of their wares, one of the few bright spots on Sukhumvit. However the order to close all sidewalk vendors for the duration of APEC meant that this area too had been cleared, so for the first time in over 30 years here I saw the windows of Villa Supermarket ......... tastefully decorated with the back sides of "For Sale" and "Wanted" ads etc. for all to enjoy.

Good eye OH. ÝIf you had to pick one sight on the whole Sukumvit corridor with eye appeal, it would have to be the colorful splash of fruit and flowers gracing the sidewalk in front of Villa. ÝWhen I walked past last weekend I thought "who is the braindead f_ck that decided these vendors fall in to the same category as all the cheap trinket/apparel peddlars?" Fairness, I suppose. Funny none of these genius beaurocrats identified the endless walls of billboards on Vipawadee as offensive to the APEC visitors. ÝGo figure.

Oldhand. I remarked to someone about that as well...I love those flower stalls....looks like shit now. I went last night from Suan Luang over to the river to see the Royal barge Procession. The highway was blocked solid, so we dropped down to normal roads and flew across Bangkok, quicker than I have ever done it before. Then got a great spot on the river with no one around...wonderful evening. Roads have been so clear this week....Come again soon Georgie.

I'll withhold judgement on wether I like it or not. ÝIt is definitely cleaner. ÝBetter? ÝTime will tell. ÝWhen I left on Sunday it still seemed there were plenty of girls about. ÝThe game seems a little different than my trip in May. ÝThe clean up occurred around Nana in the morning while I was in getting a 2 hour traditional massage. ÝI went in and there were vendors scattered about. ÝI came out and there were none. ÝIt was like walking into the twilight zone. ÝAlong with the sleaze went some of the charm. ÝAnd I sure miss the food and OJ vendors. ÝThe nam somme is tough to beat. ÝThe vendors just moved. ÝThey didn't dissapper. ÝThey ended up scattered to the four winds. ÝSome were even over by Banrie coffee shop which is a much more traditional Thai area. ÝThey will make a lot less money over there. ÝThe thai coffee is pretty tough to beat. Ý I am not sure cleaner is better. ÝTime ticks on. ÝMaybe before the deaf vendors starve to death they will figure out they should change careers to sukhumvit brick layers. ÝBetter? ÝDon't know.

I am not sure cleaner is better Well, try swapping BKK for Singers for a week or two, and then you'll know. Sentosa. This is their idea of civic fun. AAARGHH!!! Very clean place though. Spotless. Efficient. Only a matter of time before they have the place shrink-wrapped for added hygiene. No doubt Thaksin & Co are thrilled to the marrow when they contemplate this marvel. None of that irritating Bangkok-style life stuff messing the place up. Well, f_ck them. My needs come first, and I need a certain amount of sleaze, filth & chaos to get the most out of my depravity. It's like bonking a BG in that squeakily efficient ST joint they've got at NEP - just doesn't ring true, somehow. Decaffeinated coffee.

Well its all over, no boms, no nothing. All the sooks that did not come for fear of massive problems and kaos and all the other sooks that left the country for a few days, huh, sooks. A friend said he was scared they would drop a dirty bom on bkk and that would be it, patoohey I say, why waste a good dirty bom on a filthy city, they would need to save that for a clean city for maximum effect. If they did a dirty bom here, it might clean the place up a bit, blow all the other crap outer town and what would be the good of that, defeats the purpose, may as well be a clean bom. Anyway, its safe to come home now everyone.
