Moke, glad to see that you noticed. Thanks Sorry, but hat you said simply made no sense. Sending back the law will not make Thais to be less educated. Moke what you said was simply that by sending back the law the King was not giving Thais all the education they could get. On that you have no clue what you are talking about. Or do think that the law would have made Thais better educated? Do you actually know what the law is about -besides knowing that it involves the Ministry of Education? It is a law that deals with bureacratic matters. It is not a law that breaks new ground in making people more educated (you will be a bit more educated about this subject after reading this). If you guys want to discuss specifics, we can do that. Many things were not included in the law. Government rushed it without even discussing some issues simply because it had enough votes and decided to stuff it down the throad of the oposition to make a point: do not bother us, we will do as we please. Some things that Takshin does annoy HM (don't ask me what). HM is sending a message to the PM. The law will be redrafted and sent back to the King and passed. The alternative, to submit it to another vote and get it passed by over 2/3 of the votes and then become law in 30 days -regardless of royal aproval will not happen. What evidence do I have? Basically, I know sh*t. I am just repeating what I hear from some of my Thai friends, who unlike me do know, because they do move in those circles.

Smegs, That's the bit I wanted to hear. Now I can ague with the people who are telling me differently. It's a bit like the British House of Lords. Don't like this bit so back to the Commons. No big deal really !

Smegs - Point taken!! I took the article at face value and voiced my overall concern about "the general lack of overall education of the Thai people!" Not living in BKK, I am not up to speed on the nuances of Thai politics. I appreciated your point about the King sending a message to Takshin regarding his performance. I value education highly and meant the king should have used a different bill to send his message to Takshin. After reading your post and giving it even more thought, sending back the education bill is a VERY LOUD message to Takshin!! Does this imply a major vote of no confidence?? I know the royal family is practically deified by the Thai people. Does the king actually have that much control over which party will be in power? Could his influence actually unseat Takshin's government? moke

"Does the king actually have that much control over which party will be in power?" No. In fact the Thai constitution more or less forbids the Crown from interfering in the electoral process or the conduct of most government business. This was, by one interpretation, the root of the FEER flap of some months ago. When FEER published an article inferring that the King had criticized the PM, that was interpreted by some as suggesting that the King had violated the Constitution. Lese Majeste!

What effect does the King have on the reigning party or its current direction by sending back a bill i.e. sending an obvious message? Is it just symbolic in nature, or does it actually accomplish something? moke

It may be seen as symbolic, but its effects may not be. For those who think that the King has no saying about how the country is run, I would refer them to the King's intervention in the resignations of prime ministers Thanom Kittikhachorn in 1973 and of Suchinda Khraprayun in 1992. Suchinda's case in 1992 is probably most indicative of the wide support the monarchy has among the Thai people. After Suchinda's resignation, the King asked Anand Panyarachun to become Prime Minister and to form a temporary government, pending changes on the role of the armed forces in domestic politics – and the holding of a new round of elections. Draw your own conclussions.

Education is a complex subject. How much do you educate people and who ? The Japanese have gone overboard on this where even the crane driver has a degree. There is also much pressure on Japanese children to do well with sometimes disturbing results. Japan has however a culture of innovation and I am sure it's economic power needs the education base. I have been told many times that the Thais are a 'copy-copy' culture in work and education. Rote learning has no use unless learning to think is taught as well. It will probably take a couple of generations to change Thailand and one bill rejected is hardly going to effect things that much so on reconsideration Smegma saying it was a political message about general performance is probably 'about right'. It does however ask more questions about the direction of the country in the coming years. Thaksin wanted an end to the drug problem before the Kings birthday and if you saw the UK TV programme innocents were targeted as well as the guilty. The only way to stop the drug problem is at the top and not at the bottom. 'Dumbing-Down' is a term heard in the West, the World League tables for literacy make interesting viewing. The US was somewhere between 33rd-38th with Cuba in a higher position. Makes yer think? I don't know where the UK is. I would expect it to be behind the other Northern European countries.

I am not surprised at the literacy position of the USA. We started a state lottery in Calif. with a significant percentage gloing to education. The lottery has been around for quite a few years now, and the Calif. education system is in even worse shape than before the lottery started - if you can belief the news media! I could go on and on about the new college graduates we hire with computer science degrees that contribute significantly to the World League tables for literacy rating for Calif. Sounds like the King's messages are anything but symbolic! moke
