Don't jinx me.

BTW I work in Saudi so I know a little about terrorist warnings....
1 hour to go......

In July 2001 a French newspaper reported that Osama Bin-Liner was meeting with representatives from the C.I.A. in Paris.

Who knows what goes on? One thing for sure is that the 'terrorist attack' warnings are having the effect of frightening the public and allowing governments to push through more restrictive security measures. I suppose something had to replace the old 'Soviet Union' as the bogeyman ? Although I believe this threat to be worse than the 'Cold War'. Islamic Fundamentalists have 'a' belief. How do you shoot that?

In general Thailand is a peacful country and the moslems are well behaved. Things seem to be changing and I am very sorry about it since Thailand for me was a refuge away from the 'Mad,mad,mad,stressful World'

I should imagine that Thailand is a favoured target.

Just think:
1) easily accessible;
2) plenty of soft US, UK, European 'targets';
3) many US, etc. tourists;
4) much to upset Muslim fanatics (eg debauchery) ;
5) would really upset the Thai economy.

As for being 'generally peaceful', the same was said of Bali.

Here's another warning for you and I was planning a visa run to Lao.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
------------------------

LAOS

January 5, 2004

This Public Announcement is being issued to advise U.S. citizens
of increased security concerns in Laos. This Public Announcement
supersedes the August 28, 2003, version and expires on July 8, 2004.

In Laos, there have been attacks on public markets, transportation facilities, and all forms of ground transportation. Between March 2000 and January 2001 and, more recently, between February and
November 2003, Vientiane and several other towns throughout Laos experienced a series of bombings, generally in public places, including markets and transportation facilities frequented by foreign tourists and U.S. citizens. In September 2003, two bombs
detonated outside a market in Vientiane and in Savannakhet province. U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Laos are advised to exercise extreme caution in public places and to be alert to their surroundings, since the locations of future incidents is unpredictable.

There have been sporadic attacks by heavily armed groups at selected points along the Lao-Thai border and in a number of northern provinces. More attacks could occur. Provinces that are most prominent in reports of attacks are Xieng Khouang; Luang Prabang;
Houaphan; Sayaboury; Saysomboun Special Zone and north of Vang Vieng in Vientiane Province (not to be confused with the separate municipality of Vientiane).

Well guess I might go to Cambodia if I need that visa.

The difference being that the Thais would have no compuction about kicking out every single Moslem out of their country if crap goes down.

I love security check in at Don Muang -- Whites, and Thais can pass through quickly. All remotely arab looking people get pulled out of the line and majorly screened. Racial profiling - YAY!

Injustice is really great when you're on the right side of the gunbarrel, huh?

Yep, sure is.

But, you know what, if was on the receiving end of the racial profiling barrel, I wouldn't have an issue with it. I'd have an issue with the group of morons that made me a target for searches, but I wouldn't have a problem with the folks singling me out.

I guess it's the difference between an enlightened horizon, and none. Nevertheless, as that's not the case, I'm certainly smiling with glee.

Warnings of Terrorist attacks these days are about as valuable as any other "hot tips" you might eventually get.

The "stock tip" you get when the stock has already peaked. The "horse tip"when the odds are so short it doesn't matter. The "sure thing" that won't, the "great movie" that's not and the "perfect whatever" that isn't.

People just love to have "inside information" and the "latest gossip" - now we have the "oh-ah" spine tingle sensation we can have with the whole "terrorist" warning thing. People thrive of the drama they can create from this - the "agonising" decisions over travel plans, the heart wrenching calls from relatives at the last moment, the "worry" over loved ones far away - oh the humanity of it all.
Today we can be sure to have regular "terrorist alerts" for the simple reason that there is a market for them.

Do I care? Hell no. It keeps the numbers of tourists down in Thailand so it keeps the prices down. I win. It makes people holiday in their own country. The Governments win. There has been a massive increase in employment in security related fields. The workers win. Heck. The terrorists can phone in their work without getting out of bed and hurting anyone. Everybody wins.

Except Thailand doesn't always work that way, obeying a classic economic model of supply and demand. When demand goes down, a lot of places raise their prices.

This is particularly true with the girls. If they have no savings, can't absorb a short-term downturn and need 10K a month to survive (not "profit", but survive), it doesn't "matter" to them whether it's 5 x 2K or 10 X 1K, as long as it's 10K total.

After years of coming to LOS I actually spent some time in Koh San. You want to talk about soft targets!!!!! Hundreds of Israelis, Israeli restaurants, chabad houses, Israeli businesses. Most of these folks are boys and girls that have just finished there military service so they party hard in Thailand and India. Honestly, after seeing these folks, it is hard to believe they are in one of the top armies of the world.

I know a little more than most about the terror situation and privy to some good info and I have to believe that the Thai authorities, in a typical Thai manner, have come to some accomodation.

It was f_cking scared sh_tless in Kho San being around all the Israelis. Don't get me wrong, I am a Jew and hardcore Zionist of the Sharon brand, but damn!!! Talk about target rich environments. A truck bomb driving into one of th chabad houses would kill alot of people. The Palestinians did this in Argentina last decade at a Jewish community center and killed alot.

KS also has alot of cheap Americans like myself and plenty of Japanese and European hippies. However, I did see alot of cops and some were on horseback.

I think the enemy knows that if something ever went down, the Taksin would throw every single muslim out of Thailand, including the Thais. There would be a backlash against muslims in Thailand, mostly of a non-violent nature.

The rich Arabs that are bankrolling the Islamo-fascists probably party in LOS too and do not want this to end.

So much more happens than we see. It just makes no sense that nothing has happened.
