Spot on, Holmes. Let these people sort it out for themselves, and hope it doesn't spoil our good times meanwhile.

"Bangkok has so far blamed the trouble on local gangsters exploiting disaffected local Malay-speaking Muslim youths who feel few emotional ties to the predominantly Buddhist country."

At least they say it instead of pretending it's a religious conflict. It's about money and personal power, nothing more. Snuff the warlords and payoff the kids and the problem goes away. But as long as the conflict goes on, it makes hyper-patriots more electable and lets them and their friends siphon more out of the military and police budgets.

This is indeed a very sad and bad day for Thailand. No one is to blame except the bad muslims down there.
I have been to many places and it always seems to be the muslims that stir up trouble.
The government in Thailand has tried to give them some extra benefits, but it seems they want even more.
The south of Thailand will probably suffer even more economically, and financially.

Back in 1993, General Kitti Rattanachaya, Commander of the 4th Army in South Thailand was posted to BKK to a non-portfolio post. There was trouble in the South. He blamed the muslims. In the end BKK found out it was the army and local officials creating the whole jing-bang because BKK wanted to cut funds to Southern officials and they wanted to justify for more.

Don't fingerpoint at a religion for what some parties in it do, especially the bad things. You have the IRA blowing up the Harrods when I was in London back in 1983-84. That's sectarian violence for you...Christians aganst Christians. You have hindu extremists killing churchgoers in India some years back. In 1993 we had David Koresh shouting "We Ain't Coming Out (WACO) " blowing the Feds and ATF agents away. We had the Oklahoma bomber.

There must be a reason. The apparent may not be reality.

I find it difficult to agree with largeload's comments but nevertheless I think the point is valid.

Muslim's never seem to satisified with anything either given, provided or otherwise and the only credible thing they seem to want is their own autonomy and this they feel can only be achieved by violence.

However, it was interesting to note that the security forces were tipped off about this latest incursion and it is quite possible Captain Toxin's analysis of the situation is credible for once.

As always the media will go into a frenzy and amplify the situation from a realistically localised event into a national or international incident, which to a certain degree plays into the hands of those that plan these attacks and pull the puppets strings.

It will of course be intresting to see how matters develop over the coming days and weeks.

Three weeks ago I was reading the Bangkok Post and there was a photo of a "Government worker" who had been shot dead in one of the 3 southern provinces. Just another shooting, a daily occurrence.

Two gunmen on a motor bike murdered him with a couple of bullets as they rode by. He was a street sweeper. Just one of those countless little guys you see with a whisk like broom harmlessly relocating the dust. Just a very ordinary guy doing a very menial job. And for that he was regarded as a valid target by these "insurgents". That is the calibre of these cowards.

Today I heard the news that the Thai security forces had slaughtered over a 100 of these gutless assassins. I say well done. Keep up the good work.

My sympathy to any of the police or security forces killed or injured.

This is the BBC site:-

It also has links to the implications !

Look at the BBC map. Does anybody know if the strip of Thailand that gets very narrow with Burma (Myanmar) the Muslim population extends up to this point ???

Oh yeah, not to mention the killing of those dangerous and so violent Buddhist Monks in the South... The common factors in extremist terrorists, but more so with the Muslim kind, are virtual illiteracy and cowardice.

According to Thai government spokesman it is not religion related..... go figure!!

Of course it's not.

I kinda agree with part of that stance, as it ends up *not* giving the muslim extremists the kind of exposure they hope to give their actions and movement - instead, they are just labeled as 'gansters and thieves'.

On the other hand, the real reason behind those statements from Thaksin might be that admitting otherwise would weaken his gov't as they would then admit that they aren't in control of muslim terrorists, and that muslimk terrorism is taking place on his watch. Bad motivation, but good outcome for their stance. Just one look at the pictures of some of the 'insurgents' is pretty obvious - they wear the usual muslim garb.

It also leads me to believe that more violence will follow, with a final escalation on the Thai side, *IF* the violence starts to expand from the South into the northern or central regions (where it will hurt the economy)

No it doesn't, in fact I didn't even think Songkhla was a majority Muslim province. My understanding was that the three Muslim dominated provinces were Naratiwat, Yala and Pattani, doesn't even extend as far north as NST.
