Quote: from StrayGypsy on 2:07 pm on Dec. 28, 2004 God dammit Bush !! get your head outta Iraqy sand and go lend some real money $$$ say 1 billion, cause 15 million aint gonna cover the powdered milk, cereal, water, meds, and shelter these people need for many months to come.
Don't know where you get your numbers, but "U.S. aid for Asia's earthquake is expected to eventually rise from the millions to more than $1 billion" [CNN] Furthermore, "The U.S. government is always near the top in total humanitarian aid dollars" [CNN] Lastly, the USAID agency had committed an initial $35 million to the relief fund, which in short term drained its resources - they had just spent everything they had, and will need to ask Congress of the White House for me - a formal process, that could take a few weeks. The entire $$$ pledged by all countries contributing to the relief fund, is $81 million so far, of which the U.S. is the largest contributor. I believe ANY aid right now is a welcome relief to those receiving it.

I agree that any aide is welcome at a time like this. However, when you're the world's largest economy it's pretty much a given you will be donating the largest dollar amount. It's just unfortunate that we are among the less generous leading Western nations as a percentage of GDP. Also, just think what all those hundreds of billions of dollars we wasted on Iraq could be doing for the people of Asia and Africa right about now. The stupidity of America is truly mind boggling.

popsecret: Donations in accordance with the GDP are generally calculated based on cash donations only and do not include donations in the form of humanitarian assistance (i.e. food, tents, blankets, etc.). The US government traditionally donates plane loads of other materials to help in disasters such as this, and the C-130's to get it there. It also does not include repositioning military forces to assist in whatever way they might be required, which comes with a considerable pricetag. In addition, it does not include private donations such as the one I heard about on CNN last night....the owner of the Cincinnatti Reds baseball team is donating $200,000 to fly a planeload of supplies to Thailand. By the way, this is more than the French government was assessed in the first donation made by the EU. The US donated 2.4 billion dollars to relief efforts worldwide in 2003 which was 40% of the total. I think it is time the rest of the world stepped up and helped out also. -------------------------------------------------------------------- hypershade: George Bush and his administration had nothing to do with the tsunami. It was an act of God and, as such, should have had no political implications. Now, because Bush chose to take action first and then seek out the TV cameras, he is somehow at fault? I have heard nothing from Blair, Chirac or Sharon to name three of the many world leaders that have not spoken out. I have, in fact, only heard the Australian PM publicly comment on the tragedy. How about you? Have you heard any comments made by anybody of any consequence? And, frankly, your European opinion stinks.

After the tsunami Clinton came out right away and said: "I feel your pain!" Aaaaahhhh....what a decent man...too bad I don't have a daughter to send for an "internship" at the Clinton library...I am sure they have knee-pads with presidental seal. By the way the amount quoted by EPC is not including the money being spent in Iraq and Afganistan, which is a "waste of money" according to the confused. The reason for the entire bruhaha, is the idiotic comment by the pencilneck geek beancounter at the UN. He was wetting his panties over the fact that we are not being taxed enough...and pissed about the lost opportunuty to line his packet with some aid money, since the Oil for Fraud program was canned. F...him, and the UN. PopSecret why don't you put out the burning American flag and pick up a history book, son, you might learn somethin'...

PM from Daffy Duck...
> The stupidity of America is truly mind boggling. You're right - the US is stupid to even contribute a single penny, because no matter what, people like you can't appreciate any sort of aid and assistance rendered. How much have you personally given?
In addition to one-off donations for rare events, I have also setup automatic recurring donations to a few national and international groups I respect. This year I've earmarked roughly 5% of my spendable income for direct personal donations. Of course there are many people who contribute much more than me, both as a precentage of income and in raw dollar terms, but that only serves to strengthen my resolve to do better. As for the US, well I wouldn't be surprised if the comments of a certain undersecretary-general might have helped get the number a little higher a little earlier. Perhaps that was the intention from the beginning. If so, it looks like it worked. Regardless, in any case the amont donated so far is way below the amount we're throwing away in Iraq! Anyone who feels safer because of what we've done in Iraq is an ignorant moron pure an simple, and I hope they live to see their ignorance bite them in the ass. Let those who voted for Bu$h be the first to go fight his misguided wars against those who cannot harm the homeland. The rest of us will be preparing for our true enemies like AQ and North Korea. BTW... For my purposes, "spendable income" includes all income not already allocated for house, car, food, retirement, and insurance. KillerFlix... I'll stop pointing out the blatent errors of my own country when: 1. The media starts doing it's job and quits kissing Bu$h's ass. f***ing pussies! 2. Our commander in cheif quits lying to us about what we've gained and what we've lost from his decisions. 3. The WH cabinet is made up of people other than "yes men". 4. The religious evangelical nut cases quit their "soft" political endorsments 5. Corporate America's endless political contribution loopholes are finally closed completely. Good luck!

I'm an American myself and I can say whatever I want about it. I live in a very red state, so I know what mis-guided patriotism looks like. People can't distinguish between supporting the troops and supporting the president. Everbody is supposed to just rally behind whomever is in charge. It's strait out of "Wag The Dog". Your partriotism is being yanked like a chain and off you go into mindless flag waving mode. That's what average Russians and Chinese do also, and few would call what they have a democracy or a republic in any sense of the term. WTC was brought down by several Saudi-born folks from what I remember. Something like 40% of Americans STILL think Sadam was involved, even though there is no evidence whatsoever to merit those assumptions. However, everbody seems to just ignore how f***ed-up and irresponsible Saudi Arabia is because it's Iraq that's always in the news. From the sounds of it, you've already drank the koolaid.

Hypershade Please spare us the lecture of European moral superiority. I was in Eastern Europe for 6 mo this year and I have to tell you the EU not just suck, it's a sham. It is a socialist, secular colonialization of less developed nations for exploitation and a creation of slave-labor. For years the EU nations steadily buying up and dismantling any business in E-Europe that would be considered competition after activ membership. The EU is looking for cheap labor with just enough disposable income to consume about 30% of their western counterparts. In the meantime the buying up of land and natural resources continues... The bombed out towns and villages looked great in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina...not to mention endless rows of graves everywhere...congrats. popsecret Your 5 point gripe: 1 A major news organisation in co-operation with a political party attains forged government documents to affect a presidental election... 2 what the hell that means? 3 WH cabinet should be anti-war, enviromentalist, fundamentalist muslims... 4 It's only allowed to megalomaniac speculators. 5. Lawyers, unions, hollywood are OK
