"Pledge money to help aid agencies buy much-needed food, shelter and medical supplies for the survivors by ringing the helpline 0870 60 60 900 or you can donate via the Disasters Emergency Committee website in the sidebar."

The Disaster Emergency Committee is co-ordinating an appeal for aid in the disaster-hit region, representing charities including ActionAid, British Red Cross, Cafod, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision. Khao Lak is still under distress.
According the Rayadivers, who helped from very first moments to save and rescue peoples : FOOD, WATER, CLOTHING AND MEDICINES are still in need.

Locals, whose homes were destroyed are still lacking them.

If there are any places to donate these, act now.

Well done for starting the thread, BigDUSA, but I expect that you know what I am going to say about this.
It was you that firstly advised people to allow the poor people of Phuket 6 months to grieve for their dead. Then it was you that said that you would not want to spend your holiday time in a place where there had been recent deaths.
It is all very well for people to donate money or arrange for events to raise that money for this most worthy of causes.
But it has been said many times, what the poor people of Phuket, Krabbe, Phi Phi, etc need more than anything, is the return of tourists. When I was in Phuket for two weeks from New Year's Eve, I saw the Head of the local Chamber of Commerce or some equivalent organisation on TV. He said that they did not want money given from one Government to their Government. What they wanted was tourists to return and the sooner the better.
I have the satisfaction of knowing that I spent £1000 directly into the Phuket economy. It filtered down to the pockets and purses of chambermaids, reception staff at the hotel and their kitchen staff. The same in restaurants and bars. Other beneficiaries include the tuk tuk drivers, car hire and motorbike hire people, the Elephant Trek outing, some BGs and bar owners, airport baggage handlers and check in personnel, money exchange people and shop girls. Even those despicable Boys in Brown that stopped me and fined me for not having a license on me. 300 baht to those Bastards!

If you can't go there, then by all means make a donation. But why not lets start a campaign of positive tourism. By that, I mean encouraging people to actually go out of their way to positively choose Phuket and those other Thai resorts for their holidays this year, in preference for their normal venues. OK, so there may be some minor inconveniences, some sights still remaining that induce one to shed a tear, but overall, Phuket is remarkably well on the way to being back to normal in many ways and a great holiday could be had there.
So lets try and turn the low season back into a mid season at least and help those lovely people in the best way possible, by putting money directly into their establishments and into the pockets of their staff.
Those of you that were going to Samui or Pattaya, Chiang Mai or Bangkok, please go to Phuket instead. They need you more
