News report from India: "India's science and technology minister requested an investigation into a report that his country's air force base was told of a massive quake an hour before the tsunami hit its southern shore but disaster officials were notified too late to take action to protect people."

All good factual points !!..... but both Hawaii and Alaska seismic institute knew the 9 pt quake struck off the Indonesian coast that early Sunday morning/post X-Mas day. Problem is when the tsunamis struck Indonesia immediately afterward ?... wiping out everything and their communications that should of alerted other regions. I grant you Thailand and India should of had enough time to gather valuables and haul ass off to higher ground. Thye had lag times of what 2 hours ? But the north western Indo coast didnt have a chance as to the timing/warning. Just look at the towns/villages wiped clean off the map. They got jacked bad, really bad down there.

Why did those guys registering the quake & possible tidal waves not inform the global/Asian news channels like CNN, BBC, MTV etc.? Hopefully they could have done a few broadcasts & 'some' viewers down the coasts could have been warned?

Colin Powell stood next to Kofi Annan when being interviewed by journalists on 31st December. A journalist asked about Diego Garcia? Colin Powell replied,"I have no information on Diego Garcia." Colin Powell has no information on Diego Garcia. He said it on TV.

This is a good point. The instant effect of World news from these stations may have been the only possible wake-up call ? The US military has close links to the Thai military but since the date was 26th December I bet most were on holiday or nursing hangovers. Seismologists had been predicting an overdue quake in this area for some time. To set up a warning system may have taken quite a bit of money. The last quake in the Indian Ocean with a Tsunami like the 26th happened about 500 years ago. What is needed now is an effective warning system in place. Also one for the Atlantic because of the instability of 'LA PALMA' in the Canary Islands. "Early warning system would be little help?" Daily Telegraph

The people who detect earthquakes do issue press releases that are (and in this case were) picked up by the new media. But to detect that a tidal wave has occurred, it is not enough to detect an earthquake. Special ocean level equipment is needed that only exists in the Pacific Ocean because of the rarity of tidal waves in other bodies of water in the world. After this last disaster, it will probably be installed elsewhere, even though a significant tidal wave in the Indian Ocean is thought to occur only once every 100 years or so. Even with good detection technology in place, a warning infrastructure would have to exist in each country to warn people. For example, some places in the US have sirens placed all over their cities where tornadoes are particularly common. This would hard to do for many parts of Asia, and maybe not practical given the infrequency of major tidal waves in the Indian Ocean.

You mean that Powell has no information on "damage" to Diego Garcia? I assume that is what he meant. Since Powell is Secretary of State, and not Secretary of Defense, and there was no damage on Diego Garcia (according to published reports) I would not expect Powell to have any information on that.

That is all he said,"I have no information on Diego Garcia" Nothing more nothing less. He did look exceedingly nervous, head and eyes moving this way and that. Other leaders have just looked sad and concerned. Powell had the jitters which would be unusual considering his military background. Looking at him on TV it did look a strange reaction for someone so experienced. He looked like a man under enormous pressure. ----------------------- Diego Garcia was probably protected by the reefs. Map:- http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/diego_garcia_pol80.jpg "Carolyn Bell, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey, said even though an earthquake like Sunday’s will radiate destructive waves in all directions, the damage caused by the water differs greatly depending on the undersea topography. She speculated that the numerous coral reefs may have dissipated some of the waves’ impact on the British-owned island, resulting in only a slightly higher tide that residents might not necessarily notice. Does Dubya have any information on Diego Garcia? I'm sure he'd be a good source for a reliable quote.

silentbob, You sound like a Democrat. The only reason I like them was because of Jack Kennedy which is about the sum total I know of American politics. Dumbya certainly comes across as not one of the brightest on the planet but there are advantages to this. i.e he is more transparent than a silk tongued 'pakwaan' like Blair. Now back to the thread................. It was either Sky or BBC news had an interesting item from Thailand yesterday. They visited the Thai seismographic office (I think it was located in Phuket?). They asked the young Thai scientists etc did they detect the undersea earthquake. The answer was affirmative. The Thai said, "we immediately informed Bangkok." When pressed on what Bangkok would have done the shy Thai did not want to answer. You could see he was embarrassed. A Thai of small or low social status tells Bangkok there is trouble brewing. Probably not believed or ignored? This is all too common the World over - people cannot differentiate between important information and important people ?
