Most Thais are incapable of riding a bicycle safely. As for operating a subway transfering thousands of people on a daily basis. Forget it.

Kenneth, racist cr*p. Its not as if other countries dont have accidents. The London Underground and the mainline rail system in the UK have had their fair share of accidents, as I'm sure have many other countries around the world. If it was a computer error that allowed the second train on the track, then I imagine it was a system designed by a foreign company. There will always be problems with large scale projects like this. The important thing is to learn from it and ensure procedures are put in place to prevent it happening again.

Call it what you like. Even the Thais are scared to ride on the subway cos they know how things operate in this country.

Kenneth, It is unfortunate that you should make such "generalisations" in a situation like this. In your first post you state " MOST THAIS are incapable of riding a Bicycle safely". You must be having a wealth of statistical data to support this statement. And in your second post you state " Even the Thais are scared to ride on the Sub-Way-----". Are you aware that prior to this accident an average of 175,000 passengers (MOSTLY THAI ) rode the Sub-Way every day ? And your clincher " as for operating a Sub-Way transfering thousands of people on a daily basis. Forget it." Have you conveniently forgotten that the Sky-Train ( which also transfers thousands of people on a daily basis ) has been operated by Thais for nearly 5 years now without any major problems ? There is no denying that this accident could have and should have been avoided, and there is no denying that more than lip service should be paid to public safety. BUT to generalise, as Finchy pointed out, smells of racism.

I think that greedy, lazy-ass tip-monger in Subway put a curse on the Subway. The injured were not too far from all the MPs to get back rubs. I can see a conspiracy here. Rin could have given many Chep Kai Sais that day.

I was waiting at Lumpini station when they shut the system down - reason they gave was "electrical failure" - we smiled and left the fully lighted station with its running escalators - figuring it was something else. I find the nice round figure of exactly 100 injured suspect (it was reported elsewhere as an equally neat 200). Operations is always the poor relation to Maintenance and Finance in any Operate and Maintain (O&M) contract. That applies in Western coutries as much as in Thailand. Typically millions will be spent on equipment, programmed maintenance and computer technology and upgrades. The whole mess then gets dumped on the Operators who are paid less than security guards but are expected to make it all work 24/7. This was a computer system failure, clear and simple, the only human error was in the design....

The system was designed by Siemens AG, the German company.

i dont know what you know but I know that those things are driven from the command centers and not by individuals in the cockpits. rtb

When I refer to the Operator I am referring to the "command centre"...not the driver of the train who would have simply moved forward on the green and wham! Bug chasing through complex operational computer systems is a full time job in the early days of a new operation and never totally ceases during the life of the operation. "Coal face" implementation and training is costly to do properly and since its value is only apparent when something goes wrong each successful implementation usually just ensures a budget cut for the next project.

I believe that the subway system (unlike BTS) has only one track, except at the stations. So only one train can be moving between any two stations at a time. The system is supposed to be completely automated for normal operation to make sure only one train is on the track. My understanding is that the train that caused the accident was not part of the normal automated system operations (it was empty) and was controlled manually onto the tracks at the wrong time. According to the BBC: "Workers lost control of a train being taken out of service after disabling an automatic braking system. The train then slid down the track and collided with the other train."
