Quote: from West on 8:19 pm on Jan. 21, 2005 Did Boeing need military aid then? The EU does produce shrimps, Norway being the main shrimp producing member state.
Boeing does not get military "aid". Boeing has been a supplier of aircraft to the US military. These are completive contracts, not aid. The last military aircraft that was directly related to a Boeing passenger aircraft, was the 707, which has not been produced for about 40 years. The US does not give aid to private companies, this only occurs in fascist countries like France and Germany. The amount of these contracts that Boeing won in competitive bidding is far less than the amount of direct US aid (cash) given to France and Germany to rebuild these countries after WWII via the Marshall Plan. This “aid” was never repaid, and never acknowledged, and never was any thanks given. AND NEVER AGAIN - MAY GOD REST MY SOUL. If Norway produces shrimp, it must be frozen shrimp.

Quote: from Mr Alan on 9:01 am on Jan. 22, 2005 If that were true, why didn't the US just give the aid directly to Boeing since it would be a lot cheaper?
It does, illegally, in the form of massive tax breaks. It would be too obvious to US people if the government gave them even more help directly, hence the dodgy deals. The EU is bad in many respects, but what's the problem of trying to enforce a signed contract? And remember, Khun Thaksin has turned down massive amounts of strings-free foreign charity donations because Thailand 'doesn't need it'.

The US govenrment does not give Boeing any tax breaks. You are misinformed. Some local communities give tax breaks for companies moving to their state or city, but these are local property taxes, and all companies the same breaks. Even foregn companies in the US get these same property tax breaks when they move to a new city. These are insignigicant amounts.

The military uses a modified Boeing 747, it's called the C-5, and is still being produced. Boeing is a big enough company worldwide, that it doesn't need govt. support, unlike other airplane companies competing at this level.

Just for the record, the 707 production line was closed in May of 1991. The U.S. Military is still flying AWACS versions of the 707 and the KC-135, a refueler based on the 707 design. The KC-135s will be replaced with the KC-767, a variant of the commercial 767 design. Two 747-300s have been modified to serve as "Air Force One" and entered service with the Bush, The Elder, Administration. Until the merger with McDonnell/Douglas the KC-135 was referred to, inside of Boeing, as the 717. In 1998 the MD90 was designated the 717. Boeing has just announced the production of the 717/MD90 will be phased out over the next year or two. All this information is available at the Boeing web site, http://www.boeing.com

According to the EU filing with the WTO, 'Chicago-based Boeing has pocketed $23 billion in aid since 1992 through state tax breaks, military research and subsidies to suppliers' OK, Washington state (I guess) has given Boeing the tax breaks, not the federal government. $23B sounds a long way from 'insignificant' to me. The EU maintains that the 'military research' amounts to a subsidy, and that is paid for by the federal government. Oh, and Washington state is in trouble precisely because it doesn't give the same breaks to everyone.

Quote: from West on 4:19 am on Jan. 22, 2005 The EU does produce shrimps, Norway being the main shrimp producing member state. The current EU tariff on Thai fish imports is a massive 12%, whilst that champion of free trade values, the US, only insists on a more reasonable tariff of 97%. Since when is Norway EU member? The EU wants Norway to join, but Norway prefers to be independant, being one of the richest nations in the world (oil!)

I was going to mention that Alan was wrong. But I noticed that others did it already.

West, you are not making any sense. Norway is not a member of the European Union. Edit: Oppps. Noticed after posting that also West had already been told of his mistake.
