I'm a bit of a plane buff & work for an airline. A 747-300 definitely has the range for Gatwick-BKK in a single hop. I'm sure the only Phukey Air 747 I've seen at BKK was a 200. One bivarre explanation might be they were topping up with cheaper fuel.

Phuket were using ex-KLM B747's. These were originally -200 series but KLM had them upgraded tp -300's.
They have the legs to get from Gatwick to Bangkok but because of the prevailing upper winds cannot fly BKK-LGW direct. The fuel stop at Sharjah was normal.
The fuel venting at Sharjah wasn't.

If it did need to refuel, I am shore they did not need to completely fill the tanks, even if fuel is cheaper there the cost of flying around the extra fuel could not be beneficial.
I believe most a/c keep their tanks as full as possible to avoid problems with condensation.

Atually, they are banned from flying to Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago allready. The crew did not all have the required medical papers in order. A couple of them did, so they had to change (shorten) the flightroute and terefore time, so they could fly with just the pilots who did have the rquired medical documents. That was the last flight they were allowed to do in Amsterdam. Too many incidents. This decission however had hundreds of passengers stranded in BKK. This was all over the news 2 weeks back. As I recall lodging, food and all were being taken care off well, but they had to go through a lot of trouble to get home after a delay of at least a couple of days.
