You & stickman both full of crap.

Your high level of literacy knows no boundaries !

The 'Stickman Weekly' of 14th August where he gets the reaction is quite interesting.

From his e-mail box from readers:-

"In 1996 we had 700 murders in the UK and there were 7,000 in Thailand! That's a murder rate ten times higher than the UK! My best buddy is a police colonel - not your average tosser copper but a real Serpico type - educated in the USA etc. So, we discuss crime and punishment as I am a criminology grad. It's like this - the 7,000 murders were 'bodies found', that figure didn't include the number of people who had been run off the road on a bike and it put down to being an accident, or indeed the cases where there was no body and thus no case. Thailand, in 1996, had a detection rate of 1:14 on those 7,000 known cases, the UK boasted a long term 3:4 rate. My buddy surmised that if you had a brain, a pick up and a spade - murder was in fact easy to get away with in Thailand."

"Interesting to read the comments about how people feel safer in Bangkok than they do in, say, London. I went through that phase many years ago, and eventually rationalised it: The reason I think is that you don’t really know the place, so you know of no reason to be scared. I know London very well, and because of that, there are many areas that I would not voluntarily venture into. However, in a city that you don’t know that well, you don’t have sufficient information to know enough to be scared – therefore you wander around happily until (possibly) something bad happens. I’ve had some great times in Bangkok, in areas that, if you knew the place, you wouldn’t even think about going to!"

"Your report on violence in Thailand made scary reading. If the international press is to be believed, the increase has been attributed to ya ba addiction and its consequences. Having been an amphetamine addict myself, I have experienced the withdrawal systems which make a person hyper-irritable, irrational and at times violent. To put things into perspective a bit, I don't think that farangs have become a target as such recently, but that farangs are no longer exempt from not becoming a target."

&

"What can a farang do or carry or purchase in Thailand or get onto planes (ex: pepper spray) for personal defence? Before you blurt out the standard politically correct pontification that personal protection devices only up the ante, I would remind you of what happens to defenceless farang in Thailand when there is a physical altercation with a Thai (s). You are fighting for your life. You are probably going to lose - but you should fight. It is all very well to say that grinning and apologizing and running are first and best options but often those options are not available. It is a fight for life and it is a fight for life now. I believe many farang who suddenly find themselves in these situations are so taken aback by the severity and the suddenness and the bizarre irrationality of the violence that they are too late in realizing that they are fighting for their lives. So where do we get pepper spray and shock devices in Thailand? Can we get them on the plane?"

When it comes to information do I choose the touchy rantings of a BBK Tonight forum member or Stickman?

I will stick with 'Stickman' !

Well put Wolfie

Thailand is only safe if you keep your nose clean and keep away from the 'dark' side.
Don't mix with wrong do'ers and avoid confrontation.

And for christs sake keep away from drugs and drug users, you will be implicated even with clean piss or not.

I have been here 13 years, had 1 punch up with a Thai, I won but had to apologise...
I keep away from that area now too as he is a complete dickhead and has a long memory...

Also 1 punch up with a Farang I won and got nicked and paid 500 baht fine. He has been deported now.... shame

and I have electricuted a Thai.... but thats another story.

Thailand is not a safe place, it is full of thick thuglike f***ers and scam artists....but I still love it

I don't think anywhere is safe these days. If you go to Hospital in the UK you have the MRSA bug to contend with. My local High Street has its fair share of 'hoodies' looking for trouble. Oh yes and most of the building societies have been robbed at one time or another, they have put CCTV cameras up. The police were arresting one couple for robbing the booze from Tesco and an African tried to nick a DVD player from the Superdrug next door with all the coppers about. Of course the daft bugger got caught.

Barcelona is a very good place to get a wallet or purse nicked. In June 500 immigrants from Africa ran down a beach called Costa Caparica near Lisbon, Portugal robbing everybody in sight, mostly Portuguese there as it was a Bank Holiday.

I don't know about the rest of Europe?

I am sure though that Thailand has got worse over the last four years? It certainly 'felt' safe back in 1998/9 but that may have been because I was a newbie then ?

type in pattaya city news on search eng. hit search u will read about killings in pattaya everyday with photos of dead people as well as of people caught.all real like the t.v program cops but more graphic. Mind u,I have been going to Pattaya and Bangkok at least 3 times a year for the last 25 + years and have never seen any crime first hand

This is the exact Link. Very disturbing and informative. Amazing number of suicides by jumping, and increasing numbers of violent robberies. Now we know why DG decided to leave Pattaya for the relative safety of the North.

Wonder if there is such news about Bkk?

Back to my original comment about being shocked. It looked and seemed pretty safe to me. Then I got reading about the place from people with more experience. Maybe it's the dashing mask, cloak and flashing blade. Maybe I am just plain ugly and frightened potential trouble away.

Hi,

Here is a story abt being shocked in a positive way in LOS !

Some time ago a friend of mine lost his mobile phone while bringing his GF to the airport in Bkk (she went home before him upcountry on a domestic flight). On his way back downtown he noticed he lost his phone in the taxi to the airport!

He couldnt even call his GF because he didnt know her number and he came to see me.
After an hour or so the GF called me and told that somebody found his mobile and would give it back to him.
So we called and an Uni student F at Thammasat answered that she found the phone in the taxi.
We could come over to collect that at the campus, she did not expect a finders fee !
So off we went and an hour later my friend had his mobile back, and after long persuation the girl accepted a 500 Baht finder fee.

Would that happen in yr home country too, somebody finding and returning a lost phone at no charge ?

Cheers

Tilac

Yes.

I have lost phones in Amereka and had them returned free. I have found phones and returned them to the owner for free. Same same everywhere.

On the original issue, taking Stickman's opinions as gospel is unwise, in my opinion. As I said before, he looks at many, many things with a very narrow eye, then paints a picture with an extremely broad brush. Sad, because he used to be a good source of information.

I really believe that the level of violence has not changed much, but the difference between 10-20 years ago, and today is that we have far better access to more detailed information than there ever was before -- this gives the impression of more violence, when all it really means is that we are *aware* of larger amounts of violence.

The same holds true for almost all modern societies where information becomes more readily available in higher detail.

Life is 90% perception, and I really think that's what's going on here.

The hospital workers are percieving alot of shot wounds lately in PATTAYA.
Trouble is the vicious cycle.
Ya ba is bought and sold, often motor taxi dealers.
* (no its no cosmic coincidence that many are meeting foul play)
But large dealers that police target are caught, a % of the confiscated drug is then sold to the motor taxi dealers, by the police, who allow it as its done in small amounts and keeps the wheel of fortune going.
Another big dealer is attracted and caught * (often tipped off by motor taxi dealers)
The fights resulting are obvious.
The public get caught up in a Ya ba culture and often robbed also.
Violence is without doubt on the increase in Pattaya.
So much so, we moved away.
Over 18 years I had no incidences of attempt robbery and /or violence, but last year its abundantly clear that late night its alot less safe on the streets.
Expatchuck might also be able to enlighten doubters about woman being targets of organized thieves there.
I recall him commenting about his lady friends case.
The hospitals are working harder with stab wound victims both "'Thai and Farang nightly""
The source is being fuelled by police corruption.
Ironically those involved are doing well inthe force with dozens of busts a year.
Often protecting their "'organized small dealers that they supply with resold drugs"", who intern tip them off about the real sharks circling with large amounts.
In Pattaya kids caught with Ya ba on tV some facing death penality for having more than 15 are a nightly thing, its interwined with gun wounds and drive by stabbings.
Its beyond doubt violence at least in Pattaya is on the increase.
