Quote: from Finchy on 10:14 pm on Oct. 5, 2005 Where am I hypocritical, naive or ignorant? Did I say that Thailand does not have corruption? Did I say that the police/judiciary do not allow certain 'influential' people to get away with similar things? No. I stated that I thought 7 years for dealing pills is a fair sentence. The Phuket Gazette quotes the arresting officer as saying that the guy admitted smuggling them in from the UK and estimated he'd smuggled around 1000 altogether (yes I know that is not necessarily the truth). He is lucky he only got caught with 50 pills and only got 7 years. Another Brit got caught with 3400 at Don Muang and got 99 years. I am fully aware that to a fairly heavy user 50 is not a lot, and that it may only be barely 2 weekends where you are from, or where I am from. The point is that Thailand is not where you or I am from, and it is widely known that Thailand has strict anti-drug laws. 7 years might be a harsh sentence for dealing 50 pills to an undercover cop in the UK, but it is a fair sentence here, relative to what he could have got.
7 years in thai prison, hmm. wonder what the sentence is if he was caught in Singapore dealing this shit.......probably death by hanging. anyone knows ? I remember Singapore executed a few farang drug dealers qutie some years ago.

Since you are not Thai, I presume you meant “fair according to my Western system of values”. If so, then 7 years for a measly 50 pills is 7 years to much if you ask me. Make him pay a hefty fine, take away his pills and refuse him any future entry to LOS. Who are they kidding? You really think you will stop drugs trafficking by harshly punishing petty dealers? There is a million more morons coming where he came from. Every single day.

As I stated in my previous post 7 years might be considered a harsh sentence for this offence in the UK, but it is a fair sentence relative to what he could have got in Thailand ie the death sentence or life. So therefore I was saying it is fair according to Thai law and the Thai system of values, but (possibly) harsh according to my western value system and UK law. So you presumed the opposite of what I meant. I know what you are saying about locking him up will not prevent other muppets trying to take his place, but he got caught dealing and he knew (or should have known) the consequences. At the end of the day he got caught selling 50 pills to an undercover police officer in a country that was not his own. Of course they are going to try and make an example of him and try to promote a 'clever, undercover police work catches wicked farang drug dealer' story out of it. If he, or you, dont expect something like that to happen, then it is he, or you, who is naive and ignorant (or you have influential friends who can help you). You say make him pay a hefty fine only. What happens if he cannot pay it? Do you then deport him, or lock him up for non payment? Whilst someone else will come along to take his place, it does temporarily disrupt the supply network. New dealer takes some time to get established and settled and this gives the police time to collect intelligence. The new dealer is initially more vulnerable because he has to be out in the open more. It would be ideal (from a legal point of view, not a user/dealer p.o.v) to hit the main players at the top. However as you stated earlier these guys are protected and keep their hands clean, making it hard to catch them. The other options are hit the lower level dealers or the buyers. You cannot expect the government to just sit back and do nothing.

I recently read "damage done" a book about an Aussie who was caught with Heroine in BKK and consequently spent a considerable time in "Bang ?" "Big Tiger". It was not the best book but interesting enough, the fact is "drugs are bad". Nothing good ever comes from them. Personally not a lot of sympathy. The sting makes me think of a time in Pattaya walking back to Hotel late at night a young Thai male standing on a beach road corner, "Psssssttt, farang, farang you want cocaine? Behind him not 10 feet away a Cop (not well hid) watching and listening to everything, I just pointed to the cop laughed a lot and walked on.

Hmmm, I disagree with you that all drugs are necessarily bad. As the late, great Bill Hicks once said: "You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And If you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favour. Go home tonight take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause You know what the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? RrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrEAL f***ing high on drugs... The Beatles were so f***ing high they let Ringo sing a few songs." Some drugs are bad, some aren't. Some depend on whether they are used responsibly or not. However certain drugs, and the addicts who use them, bear a heavy responsiblity for a large percentage of the crime that occurs (in the UK anyway). And I am including alcohol in that. The point here though is that certain drugs are illegal and selling them can land you in jail for a long time as demonstrated by the guy here.

Finchy, You make some good points. This however, is NOT one of them.

Maybe I was wrong in calling you naive before, but the above remark truly is.
