...AS DO WHOEVER in hell is left in the REST the world who, if they don't believe in angels, DO similarly IDOLIZE devils, rock singers, animal gods, and football stars...

Your post illustrates that you have a rather elementary understanding of theology. There are several major Christian Sects which do not believe that angels fall to earth. Additionally, you have ignored the Taoists, Buddhists, Shinto, Hindu, Tamil, and Druid religions who do not have the concept of angels, only Gods and/or Devils.

Just because one does not believe in angels does not mean that he worships or idolizes earthly things, it just means he puts his entire focus on God (whatever he may conceive God to be) and does not expect heavenly assistance to live their lives.

Now back to the Thread Topic.

I remember way back in the 60's (when I was an 'Militray Brat') when the US Military used to put locations in Tokyo off limits because of impending demonstrations. The idea behind putting these areas off limits was to avoid putting military personnel in a position that could result in a 'black eye' for the US Government.

The restrictions we see today are of the same intent. If a military person were to get captured or killed in a terrorist incident in SE Asia, the US Government would be forced to react accordingly. This could put both the US Government and the country in question in a potentially embarrassing position and limit the policy options the US Government would have.

In the case of the UK (and the rest of the EU), the case is different. Historically they have cooperated with the American Government to bring the perpetrators to justice and this cooperation is accepted by the citizens of those countries.

I believe if it were possible the US Government would extend the restrictions it puts on the Military to all US Passport holders. The difference is that Military personnel are easily prosecuted for violating a ban (failure to obey a General Order) whilst prosecution of a civilian would result in some sticky Constitutional Issues...

I fully understand the reason why the military limits where its personnel can and cannot go. In the States there's certian establishments prohibited because of their involvement with drugs and/or a history of overcharging customers etc.

In Korea for example all barber shops are off limits for "hygeine risks." I kid you not. We were also advised to avoid protests in Seoul, but could still go there. But to put entire coutries off limits for events that happened thousands of miles away in a differnet country is painting with too broad a stroke IMHO (Bali bombing).

Yes members of terroirst organizations have been found hiding out in Thailand, but turth be told they most likely hide out in all countries. I think only places like North Korea might have borders tight enough to lock them out. EDIT: And who the hell wants to go there?

I think you revealed somehting right there CS. Historically, EU countries have cooperated in bringing perpetrators to justice. That may be true, but that doesn't exactly correspond to what the actual threat is. London is definelty high threat for terrorist attacks, recent events show this. It's cold comfort to know that if you're blown away the British will coopearte with the US. And I'm not saying we should reinstate the London ban.

So what's the real issue? Safety of personnel or political insurance? And it's interesting to note the US military has not banned anyone from traveling to SEA countries. Individual unit and in the case of the AF, wing commanders have.

At the risk of going in circles that's why I started this post. Even a small scale event like this grabs huge headlines and drives individuals to cover their asses at your (my) expense when their is low probability of something occuring in Bangkok. I hope future events don't prove me wrong about that.

My impression of Adm Fargo is that he wants to be 'one of the guys'. Therefore he will delegate the nasty work to the subordinate commanders.

This is not so much for the 'safety' of military personnel. They have historically gone in harms way as a livng. The point is political CYA, for both us and our allies. The object being not to put the Administration in a position where they have to 'put the arm' on a 'friendly' govenment....

That makes sense. You can get your way without having to be the bad guy. That's essentially what first sergeants do for their commanders. I'm not necessarilly knocking first sergeants.

Perhaps the travel ban is the fact that soliciting and then using the services of a prostitute is against the UCMJ and is punishable by life in Leavenworth.

Perhaps your commanders know you might fall into this trap and are, therefore, trying to save each of you the shame of facing a summary court martial should you avail yourselves of these aforementioned services.

Perhaps if you swore an allegiance to your commander and promised to lead a celibate life while you are in Thailand, he might lift the travel ban.

Perhaps this entire post has now lost all direction and sense of reason and should be ended.

The end.
