Recently OTOP has put a big trade show. OTOP is a collection of Thai vendors who want to export their products. Their motto for the show:
"The Miracle of Thai Wisdom"
I think that sums up their attitude in one line.
I am a witness to some of these "miracles" everyday.

the girl's reaction has to do with education and propaganda. Daffy do you ever watch thai TV?? I don't watch it much but the few mns I spend faced with thai advertisement are always enlightening. "Deck thai" "kon thai" how many times those words come up in a minute is frightening. They have to stand by the national hymn at school if I witnessed properly.
They are flooded by nationalist ideaology, almost as much that they seem to be spared from critical thinking education. It's been said often and I can only echo it, thai are not impressive by their intelectual brightness.
About that girl I don't know were she could have witnessed so many crude farangs, kiikong or even kiinok, as she's hanging out almost exclusively in Ratchada at night and even during day time she mostly stays in thai areas. Doubt as well she saw outrageous behaviour from westerners when I took her around - places like Vertigo, Sirocco glow or upstairs Qbar,nothing to panick about.
Besides she did actually ask me what happened when I was asking her to f*** off. I did then repeat that two westerners were beaten to death than repeated her reply. Asked roughly wether I had understood correctly.
She said that for sure thais wouldn't do that without provocation/good reason.
she seemed so sure of herself and uniniterested in more details before judging the situation that I confirmed the need for to leave right now. Which she did without a word.
Always liked her calm, helps me to keep peaceful but than single and going again on a rampage tonight...

I don't disagree that Thais are flooded with nationalist propaganda, and that the culture breeds compliance to dogma - but as you state it above, you appear to have left out the detail that the latest westerner was killed as part of a robbery.
Lastly, as was pointed out, Thais have every reason to jump to these 'som num naa' conclusions about foreigners, but what excuse do all the forum members of BTF have that jump to the same conclusions everytime something similar is reported?
You may have noticed that every time a farang death is being reported, there is a chorus of "he must have been a BAD farang" coming from random posters, who aren't Thai...
I'll maintain that much of that impression comes from the negative image given to Thais by the embarassing contingent of farang -- and while your girl may not have witnessed any such behavior, I am sure many of the sources of her preconceptions have.

**Actually not even sure that on the second try I didn't state there was a robbery involved but that's not the main issue. She should have asked for details before getting to such a simplistic and racist conclusion - huge lack of tact as well considering she was talking to a white guy... really lacking of smarts there...

**Definetely, but,not much of an excuse either. Keep in mind the thais witnessing the worst (or most colourful... hehe... just case anybody ever saw me past midnight in CM2 or Angel) of western behaviour in thailand are very often the worst of thai society. I can figure out some BGs friend of hers telling how kiikong are the farangs but then it's really a mater of scum and crap... if she takes their stupid rantings as serious advice than she got what she deserved.

maintain all you like, but I think your rather limited knowledge of Thai people from all spectrums of life results in your opinion being rather devalued. Your inability to speak the language and your lack of experience of working in a Thai environment reduces your opinion even further.
A short example....What %age of Thai's do you think actually witness poor farang behaviour in Bangkok...what %age of the Thai office working community hang out on Lower sukhumvit after dark?
You seem to think you know it all, but frankly......keep waffling and maybe one day contribute something rather than ignorance....

You are, I take it, talking about yourself? In general, you really should wait for the other person to provide a response, before spouting off... and, for what it's worth, by my estimate roughly less than 1/10th of 1% of the Thai population is directly exposed to bad farang behavior and/or lower Sukhumwit (and, while you are it, throw Pattaya in there as well).
You do not need 60% (or more) of a given sample to get a significant reaction, you just need louder and more observable offenders, and you end up with a stereotype being created that a willing culture perpetuates. By the way, so what exactly makes you such an expert on the finer points of sociology and human behavior?

long time no post but this seems intresting
By and large I agree with yurune on this one
a couple of points though
1) this story is originating from news international which has such balenced and neutral reporting in its stable as Fox news
and the news of the world I would take the report with a pinch of salt and source more information from more balenced reporting
Likely scenario its a stringer posting stories whos been tasked with other tasks while reporting on the tsummai aniversary
2) as to all foreniegners are bad take a good look at what is percieved here
a group of highly visible people"men" frequent the red light district of a major city
also these "men" are seen in shopping centres /resturants /public places with Women that are clearly Prostitutes in your society
the local tabloids have stories of these people up to no good / national news orginasiations have reports of foreigners caught drug smuggling
and to be honest the behavoir of these people even though accepted as a bit of fun / lads night out in there own culture appear as total idiots / scum in your society
then you have all the information you need to jump to the conclusion all foreigners are bad
now if you spend all you holiday / working life with people who have a very poor eduction / from the dregs of society then your going to here it
if you spend your time with someone who has actullaly finnished school and god forbib has actually been to colledge / university then you willl find these people to actually anylyse the situation and have a more informed view on the situation
