Quote: from Hermanolobo on 10:50 pm on Feb. 24, 2006 Anyway I posed a question not a statement about Thailand mirroring events.
Why don't you ask the stars? As for me, I believe that Thaksin is currently in a tailspin, and while he has been strategically pretty smart to get in the position he was in, he appears to have lost all of these smarts the past 6-8 months. What happened? Or rather, the question should be - was it al Thaksin's doing that landed him in the position of power, or was it someone else that did the planing and strategizing, and now that they are gone (whoever they are), Thaksin demonstrates that he can't swim on his own? This would be similar to the situation with Michael Eisner at Disney -- while Michael has received all the credit for the renaissance of Disney under him, it was really the combination of Eisner-Katzenberg-Wells that built the empire -- notably amongst them, Frank Wells that made the deals, ran the business, and managed peace amongst all partners. When Wells died in 1995, the end was predicated, as Eisner was unable to run the empire on his own - it just took him 10 years to get kicked out and run everything almost into the ground. So, did Thaksin have his Frank Wells? Alternatively, the far more probable reason might be that, as all things eitheer Chinese or Thai, he only worked hard to get to his 'goal' (getting into power), but did not believe that it was necessary to continue this work, to remain there. No different than almost every single other 'goal' that Thailand reaches, and quickly abandons once achieved (Bkk cleanup for APEC, stamping out piracy, the war on drugs, etc...) Just my $0.02.
Quote: from Hermanolobo on 12:44 am on Feb. 25, 2006 Of course this is not statisticall accurate as the sample was hundreds not thousands but as yet I have not met a bar/go-go girl who will ADMIT to liking him.
Why does it even matter if bargirls like him, as the majority of them most likely wouldn't vote, if they could, and even if they all voted, they only represent a single digit percentage, if at all, of the voters. The question is rather where is his strongst voter demographic, and how do they feel - last I heard, those were the poor in Issaan, that he paid to vote. Despite teh rich, and the middle-class, Thailand is still predominantly composed of the underprivileged. How do they vote? Who cares how bargirls vote.

So....has Thaksin been good for Thailand or not....? What has he achieved in comparison to leaders past? Thailand is a country that has a culture of political corruption. Governments of the past have been full of coalition partners all with the 'right' to embezzle whatever they felt like. Stealing in a word...Chatchai Choonhavan....nice man?.give me a break....inept and a downright thief. The country went nowhere as these people got richer and richer. Now....will that culture change within the four year term of a government? Of course not. Frankly is a leader can change that culture by 10 -1 5 % per term then the country is getting somewhere. If the next guy continues the work. over 40/50 years the culture CAN change. Of course, it can only work with people commited to this. One Thai friend once said to me "Of course he is in it for himself as well (as to do good), I expect that, but at least it's him and his family skimming off the top, it's a lot better than when there were literally hundreds of generals up there doing it". Thaksin isn't a 'thief' as such, without doubt he has engineered some policies to suit his own business interests, but he doesn't just outright steal the countries money. Thats a start of culture change. Of course, as will governments ALL OVER THE WORLD, leaders have to cover the tracks of others for party reasons. Sadly Thaksin has been as guilty of this as others, not necessarily approving of the theft, but being in a position where prosecution of the thief could weaken his government. Any comment about nightlife is frankly not even an issue when it comes to running a country. Bars closed in 1991 at 1am where I lived in Thailand....so don't bang on about the good old days, the issues were identical, those bars that paid got you a late drink, but to think the Prime Minister is soley interesting in the shennigans of some sex tourists is laughable. The Thai people have a right to clean up their own country, the affected outrage adopted by bwhite men on internet boards is laughable. Do you think the average Thai is happy with it's worldwide reputation of it's women being the cum receptacles of the worlds fat bald losers? Because even now when at home if I mention I live in thailand, the looks and nudges from the lads hasn't changed in the last 20 years. Thai people deserve better. So, we bring ourselves to what Thaksin has achieved. I could relate many stories of changes I have seen come around under his government. Rural areas of thailand I know well, with new better roads, irrigation schemes, widened canals to reduce flooding, things promised for years...never done.....Chuan...also a nice man.....never made a decision. The 30B health scheme....it works, of course it has problems, people condeming it from the first day, but it works, rural poor people are getting treated for things they never got treated for in the past. it was a brave move, likely to fail, but you don't introduce something like that without problem, it just isn't possible, but it will be a long term legacy of his. OTOP another success. Boorisat Prathet Thai as he called it, is alive and feeling a lot better than it did before his coming. What has he done wrong....God...where do we start, unlike Blair and Bush, he yes, has faults....555....way too many of them. He is arrogant beyong belief and like many intelligent men, thinks that people will believe what he says because he is intelligent. Just on a small scale his recent question time fiasco, his refusing to talk because of the stars etc....just laughable, and then to cap it all, the shin corp sale. He is not necessarily likeable, but then neither was Thatcher, but I'd prefer her Britain to the disaster of what Callaghan created. So...April 2nd election, not the full 60 days. This morning's Thaksin sounds humble....555.....that will last for a while....will he learn?..or will he come back to wreak revenge witha new improved mandate?.or will he lose? My money at the moment is on his winning, but the campaign will be fascinating and it can all change in 40 days....... Right....7:25...time to stop; rambling and start the day....

f*** Me...the most hated man in Thailand according to this board has dissolved parliament, and you are talking about f***ing burgers and beetroot. Actually....I have noticed a major change in BKK today on two fronts, one noticable thing, I've just gone half the length of sukhumvit in record time, taxi driver said, people are playing it safe and lying low for the weekend. A lot of Pro Thaksin support has be paid to be in the city this weekend. The other one is how more people are openly discussing him, before they like him, he's our PM that makes him good....today he's not.....and they are talking more openly. Everyone I have asked thinks he will win again on April 2. Lastly, I was told something today, that totally refutes a point I made above, with proof, I have changed one opinion....but sadly, I cannot elaborate on this further. Yurunes survey says % who think he will win - 100% % who think he will lose - 0% Survey sample 7 (ongoing)......

Off course he will some how. Otherwise he would not done it. He fixed a new law also a few month ago so that that HIS own party that have actully loads branches inside the party. If they want to change "flag they can not do so beucase they have to do it with in 90 days before the election. So beucase its only 60 days they can either stay or bugger off away from politics. I guess most of them can not say no to the 100 000 kick back they get every month from Thaksin. Its costs to have a few Mia Noi

FWIW, I talked to two University girls that I know, both Grad students (one Chula, other Mihidol), and they both said that Thaksin has been good for Thailand and that they would vote for him again. Neither are involved in the P4P scene.

The opposition parties are expected to announce that they will NOT stand in the election. They believe that their disagreement is with Thaksin as PM, not with TRT as the government. They believe he is using the election to provide legitimacy to his actions. As a result it could be a one party election. I'd say, field one candidate each.....in Thaksins constituency, though doubtless he'd have too much power there.

Technically speaking, they are right (ignoring the past 6-8 months), he has made tremendous strides to 'put Thailand on the map', so to speak, and to bring economic opportunities to the country as a whole. Where he sucks, apparently, is on the domestic level, or the personal level - which is unfortunate. Would he win another election, and would he manage to set himself up, again? I have no doubt about it, unless he continues to self-destruct. Really, the only major current crisis is the 73 billion sale of his business that he pulled off tax free. That can be corrected, easily enough, by throwing money at it. Wether he is smart enough to do so, is another question altogether.
