On paper, such visa grants are meant to be based on reciprocity.

Not that bad if you are serious about living here forever, do a lot of traveling in and out of the country, don't want to get married, don't want to deal with immigration ever again. I also read this can authorize you to buy land.

Isaanking,, I think the majority of us farang are merely "acceptable friendly casualties" on this one.
In my thinking they are really after the loads of Indian, Chinese, Arabs and Africans there almost permanently on tourist class visas and using the system, running businesses and robbing the Thais blind.
It is in reality a mere inconvienience to 99% of us on this board, there are many other visa types available to us all.
At this stage I only need 30 day visas,, drop in make sure my business is being run properly,, kick a few lazy Thai asses ( joke), remind them of the profit sharing scheme, check records, have a good time and come back to my second home.
The plan for semi=permanent residency is still 3 or 4 years away and will be done correctly by Thai law, so no hassles really.

Agree with Mel - and I think that in reality anyone not falling into these ethic groups will probably get away with multiple extensions in the near future.
Or, just get a visa before you depart in your home country... The new ruling is only on VOA....

One might consider that this is a knee-jerk reaction to the John Mark Karr case.
As pointed out by Stick there are a lot of English Teachers working without a permit and even though Immigration is checking the schools and their records, the best way to stop this practice is to cut it at the source and tighten up visa rules.
Where this will really hurt is in Phuket were there has been a booming business in selling golf memberships and annual golf packages to Singaporeans, Japanese, and Chinese. Some of these memberships cost in excess of 1,200,000 Bt (Blue Canyon).
With all of the cheap airfares being offered these days (for Singapore its Tiger -- SGD 100 RT), many people are buying these memberships and flying up a couple of weekends each month to golf. Overall it is cheaper than buying a local membership and golfing at home.
In summary, that asshole gets his 'day in the sun' and my golfing schedule gets screwed up...

so if you are cumming here for golf, and only staying a few days, should be just fine
