From the National News Bureau, 01 November Reported by Chindarat Bovonboriharn NEWS HEADLINE :. Culture Ministry does not prohibit young people to be Coyote girls The Culture Minister said it does not prohibit young people under 20 from being a Coyote girl as they are already protected by law. Minister of Culture Khunying Khaisri Sri-arun said the ministry's caretaker permanent secretary had sent a letter to provincial culture offices all over the country, asking them to cooperate with the provinces and local administrations in monitoring performances that may cause damages to Thai culture and tradition. Khunying Khaisri reassured that the ministry will do its best to tackle this problem after the Office of Her Majesty the Queen's Principal Private Secretary had sent a letter informing about HM the Queen's concern over inappropriate performances on Buddhism's holy days. The minister said further that at present there are many organizations taking care of the issue. Khunying Khaisri also corrected the misunderstanding that the culture ministry prohibits those under 20 years of age to be a Coyote girl. However, after studying frameworks of the relevant units involved in the matter, the ministry found that the 2003 Child Pretection Act is applicable to such inappropriate dance performed by young people. As for entertainment venues, the Royal Thai Police will make sure that no one under 20 can enter there. Khunying Khaisri made clear that Coyote dances in entertainment clubs are not prohibited, but those in public places might be banned. ============= In effect, Culture Minister says its not his jurisdiction whether or not under 20 year olds can be coyote dancers. But that he might ban performances in public places only, not in clubs. Edit: 02Nov... Source noted.

National News Bureau 02 November 2006 Reporter : Chindarat Bovonboriharn NEWS HEADLINE :. Department of Religious Affairs worried about Coyote dance in temple during Loi Krathong Festival The Department of Religious Affairs is worried about the Coyote dance in Loi Krathong Festival and hopes this year's festival complying with tradition. Regarding the Coyote dance and other inappropriate performances likely to take place during Loi Krathong Festival on November 5, Mr.Preecha Kanthiya, Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs under the Ministry of Culture, said that although individuals have rights to expression, they should be aware that their actions do not cause any harm to the culture. The Coyote dance sheds a bad light on the country's tradition and culture. As Her Majesty the Queen expressed concern about this matter, everyone especially event organizers should follow her wish by arranging Loi Krathong events in line with the Thai culture. The Director-General asked for cooperations from chief monks, temple committees, and shop operators to make sure that activities in a temple area are appropriate. --------------------------------- Regarding the Coyote dance and other inappropriate performances likely to take place during Loi Krathong Festival on November 5.... Well, it is the full moon after all. All kinds of lascivious behavior should be expected!

Well, since I've never seen this kind of thing happen anywhere else on Earth, Coyote dancing in temples, I kinda thought it WAS an expression of the culture! My mistake... However no matter how much self-acceptance I would council, they certainly have a right to perceive themselves anyway they want to. Everybody does... Carve out a whole new ideal culture if the gov't likes to, since apparently "culture" does not mean an actual expression of the people of a given region with a common language and tradition. In any event, considering the source of this, I am sure the intentions are very good. So again, in practical terms, the temple grounds are more than a holy site in Thai village societies. I don't mean to presume I know all about it. But if the villagers want coyote dancing sometime, and apparently they do, where else can they have the big space and the electicity etc to do a big show? In the local primary school? Actually I've seen them there too. Sometimes a group of villages has a big field for sports; I've seen it there, too, which might be better if they have them. Trying to be helpful...

Report from The Nation dated Friday 3 November 2006 :- Call to keep Loy Krathong free of coyote dancing =================================== Authorities yesterday warned organisers against including sexually suggestive dances in events to celebrate the upcoming Loy Krathong Festival. "The Loy Krathong Festival is a beautiful part of Thai culture. We hope all relevant parties will hold appropriate activities for this festival," Culture Ministry acting permanent secretary Veera Rojanapojanarat said. He was referring to ongoing moves to stop scantily clad young women from dancing erotically in public places. Widely dubbed "coyote dancing", this sexually suggestive dancing began in pubs but has recently spread to public events. According to Veera, provincial culture officers have been instructed to work closely with local administrative bodies to ensure that no damage was done to the country's culture. Religious Affairs Department director-general Preecha Kanthiya said the "coyote dances" could be counted as offences against the National Culture Act of BE2485. "Such dances are against our culture and tradition," he said. He also called on all relevant parties to heed Her Majesty the Queen's concerns over the fact that some women danced inappropriately at a Buddhist charity event in Nong Khai province. After Her Majesty's concern was relayed via the Culture Ministry, several authorities proposed measures to discourage such dancing shows. "Please refrain from any activity that will harm society," Preecha said. National Culture Commission secretary-general Prisana Pongtadsirikul yesterday said organisers of activities should ensure that performers act and dress appropriately. "There should be no 'coyote dancing'. For traditional dances, organisers should also ensure that dancers do not wear too-short skirts and do not perform any erotic moves," she said. Meanwhile, Wuthinan Tosuk-hawong, who chairs Srinakharin-wirot University's Student Council, said coyote dancing clearly aroused sexual desire. "Business entrepreneurs can't claim that these dances are just for fun or have artistic value," the fourth-year university student said. Wuthinan, 22, supported the idea that educational institutes should deploy measures to bar students from working as coyote dancers. "There are many jobs out there for students who want to work. These jobs are not as easy as such dancing jobs, though," he said. He said if young women embraced "coyote dancing" jobs, they would become reluctant to work hard.
