Report from Bangkoki Post dated Thursday 18 October 2007 :-

Victims turn on hunted Canadian
========================

As police issued a warrant for the arrest of Canadian Christopher Paul Neil, three young Thai boys testified the paedophile suspect paid them for sex when they were between nine and 14.

Pol Maj Gen Wimon Pao-in, who is in charge of the case, told the media he also was searching for a fourth youth believed to have had sex with the man.

Neil, 32, was identified by Thai police earlier this week after images of the suspect were released by Interpol, was believed to be in Thailand. Police say they doubt he could escape their dragnet.

Three Thai youths who were nine, 13 and 14 at the time came forward on Wednesday to tell police that Neil had allegedly paid them each 500 to 1,000 baht to perform oral sex on them in 2003. They saw the story about Neil, and his picture, on a Thai TV news programme.

Two of the boys also said he showed them pornographic images on his computer at his apartment in Bangkok

Border guards in Thailand and neighbouring countries were on alert in case Neil tried to leave Thailand. Cameras at the immigration counter captured him on October 11 as he arrived at Bangkok's international airport from South Korea.

Canadian Kim Scanlan of the Toronto police child exploitation unit dreamed that Neil would be extradited to Canada once he is arrested. More likely, he will be jailed for trial if he is arrested in Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia.

"We are quite certain he is still in Thailand and we think we are moving closer," Pol Col Apichart Suribunya said. "Even if he uses a fake passport to try to get out of the country, his pictures are already published everywhere."

Pol Maj Gen Wimon said the boys came forward to police after spotting Neil's photograph on television when his identity was revealed on Tuesday by Thai authorities.

A teacher in Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea, Neil is accused of having sex with at least a dozen Vietnamese and Cambodian boys as young as six.

He also kept a page on MySpace, using a pseudonym, a common practice.

The profile said, "Been kicking around Asia for the past five years, teaching mainly and finding other forms of mischief... I love teaching, can't get enough of it really." It described a passion for drama, musicals and karaoke.

NINGNING
This morning the news said that after 20 years in Bangkok's jail he might still not be handed over to Canada but rather to Cambodia for another 20 years in Phnom Penh.

I was watching the Thai News tonight when the Thai Police paraded this guy in front of the media.
I have no comment on what this guy is alleged to have done but I find the circus surrounding any arrest made by the Thai police to be incredibly distasteful.
Parading potential suspects in front of the media surrounded by large numbers of hangers on is not the right way to behave.
This is a high profile case but a similar thing happens at all levels and can not be beneficial to the accused. It's just a zoo!
The media frenzy also helps to ensure that forensic evidence is rendered meaningless as the world and his wife tramp their size 10 boots over a hotel room that two hours earlier was the scene of some suspicious death.
A fair trial in Thailand? Absolutely no chance!

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 19 October 2007 :-

'Bingo! We've got him'
=================

The Canadian target of a vigorous international manhunt as "a serious threat to society," sat calmly in dark sunglasses when he was taken to a press conference police arrested him Friday.

He was detained earlier on Friday in Nakhon Ratchasima after police received a tip-off, authorities said.

"Bingo! We've got him," said Pol Maj Gen Wimol Powintara to The Associated Press news agency.

Thailand's deputy national police chief told more than 100 reporters that Christopher Paul Neil, 32, appeared to be "a serious threat to society" who is suspected of having abused scores, possibly hundreds, of boys - some younger than 10 - and girls.

General Wongkot Maneerin said that it was likely that Neil, a wandering English teacher, would be tried in Thailand for abusing boys during his time as an English teacher in Bangkok in 2003.

These crimes carry a penalty of 20 years in jail in Thailand.

German police investigators triggered an international furore when they managed to "uncoil" his digitally altered internet photographs that showed him abusing many young boys in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Neil had hidden his face by lifting his T-shirt after being escorted into Bangkok police headquarters past a scrum of reporters, many from overseas.

Later as he was presented to the press he appeared calm, with no expression.

General Wongkot himself questioned the suspect - a sign of the international interest in a case that galvanised police in a dozen countries.

"His behaviour was not normal. His sexual behaviour seems to have been extraordinary," the deputy police chief said.

"We are lucky that we have stopped him now. We have many of his victims coming forward to give evidence against him," he added.

The Thai police issued an arrest warrant Thursday after a Thai boy came forward to accuse the Canadian of paying for oral sex.

Neil was finally arrested Friday morning in Nakorn Ratchasima (widely known as Korat), northeast of Bangkok, after fleeing South Korea a week earlier, following the release of his picture by Interpol with a "red alert," its highest search signal.

Police said he was tracked down after a tip-off.

Canada also has laws allowing it to punish paedophiles for their activities in third countries.

Former colleagues have regaled reporters with evidence of an "unassuming character" who was a "diligent teacher."

But writings attributed to him on the Facebook social-networking website and elsewhere show evidence of an arrogant character who offered advice about cleaning a computer of "dangerous" photographs and how to avoid character checks when applying for teaching jobs.

Neil fled Korea after wiping hundreds of postings he had made on an English teachers' discussion group and shaving his hair off.

At least two young Thais said Neil abused them and paid them money after luring them to an apartment he used to rent in Bangkok several years ago, according to the Thai police.

The German police started investigating his activities when they discovered three years ago that his swirl-disguised picture was common to scores of Internet images of his paedophile activities in Asia.

His family in Canada had urged him to give himself up.

I've never understood "bad guys" feeling the need to make videotapes or take pictures while they are committing crimes. I read all the time of guys who break into homes and then videotape themselves with the loot or in the act of stealing. I think a couple of guys even taped themselves in the house and watched the tape on the homeowners VCR. Only problem is they left the tape in the machine. That being said why would anyone including this POS want to not only have pictures of their crimes but then post them on the internet. Any of you guys ever post pics of yourself with a bargirl. Crazy what some people will do.
