Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, September 2SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) says Singaporeans who do not have a pressing need to travel to Bangkok are advised to postpone their travel plans to a later date.

This follows the declaration of a state of emergency in the Thai capital on Tuesday morning.

Singaporeans intending to travel to Thailand should closely monitor news developments there, says the MFA.

Should they decide to travel, they are advised to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at its website at http://www.mfa.gov.sg.

A ministry’s spokesman says this would enable it and the Embassy in Bangkok to contact Singaporeans and render them the necessary consular assistance in case of emergencies.

When in Bangkok, Singaporeans are advised to avoid areas where there is a risk of disturbance, like the Government House.

They should also take the necessary precautions for their personal safety.

The MFA stresses that during this period of uncertainty, Singaporeans are advised to monitor the local news diligently and be prepared to face inconveniences in their travel. They are advised to buy comprehensive medical and travel insurance.

Should Singaporeans require assistance, they can contact the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok or the MFA Duty Officer.

The telephone number in Bangkok is 001—66—(81) 844—3580, while the Singapore numbers are 6379 8800 or 6379 8855.

The MFA says that as a close friend of Thailand, Singapore has been following the recent political developments there with sadness and concern.

Responding to media queries, an MFA spokesman says Singapore hopes all parties will respect the law and exercise utmost restraint to enable normalcy to be restored as soon as possible.

Will it affect all night activities and even taking girls in hotels?
any indication of a prolonged disturbance?

Joe:

It is possible girls will not be permitted to visit hotel rooms at all.

During the coup of 1992, Thai girls were not permitted beyond the lobby of any hotel. since they were considered a threat to security.

The scenes in the lobbies were chaotic, to say the least. Some hotels even put up screens in front of their lobby couches for the sake of modesty.

Singaporeans stayed away then as well.

The feedback I have from a couple of ladies is that Soi Cowboy will be open normally tonight. While I doubt their reliability as resources (not uncommon for the bars to keep the ladies in the dark until the last min.) Worst case I go and end up spending a few hours in a ST hotel with a lovely Thai lady.

Could be worse, I could be stuck killing time on some Thailand P4P forum tonight.

What's so special about September ? The last coup happened in September, and I remember no one figured a thing as the club I was in was rocking well beyond 2 am. Since I had to catch a flight the next day I asked my hotel reception (with some hope) whether flights would be cancelled and they just laughed away my question gleefully. I tend to agree with IBFarang's observation that Thais don't know how to have a proper revolution. That's really funny, IBF.

As for the reference of Singapore's MFA to "Singaporeans who do not have a pressing need to travel to Bangkok" I wonder if such a category exists. I am not Singaporean but I am always in pressing need to travel to Bangkok.

Are there going to be tanks rolling on the streets ? An emergency may be far less frightful than a coup. And the last coup hardly posed any difficulty to the traveller. They are after local dissidents, and local dissidents are not found in touristy areas. I would think business will go on as usual.

We will see I guess.

This morning's reports are suggesting that the (Un) Democratic Alliance plans to close the BKK airport (as a symbolic gesture) so I may not even get there.

I figure that the un-democrats are pissed because they expected to win the election after the coup but proved they are so incompetent that they could not even win a rigged election; hence the desire to have their cronies appoint most of the Parlament...

Toxin showed what the people needed in order to get their votes... forget the 500 baht notes per vote, it was the populist policies.... promise everyone 30 baht healthcare, and you get the poor. Mass give-a-ways are the trick... who cares if they make sense..... just promise them and give them what they want, you will ge tthe votes.....

wtf!?! really hoping the situation won't escalate any further. already booked my ticket a week ago and it'll cost me ~us$250 to cancel. bad luck with prior travels to bkk - e.g. was scheduled to fly from nyc to bkk on 9/12/01. rescheduled for a later date and the same week an AA plane crashed near the airport at far rockaway.

State of emergency doesn´t mean there is a pressing imminent emergency. It just gives the legal framework to the government to do things and react in ways which would be illegal unless such state of emergency existed.
