Depends on what you call 'downtown'. I saw video of PAD boys firing handguns on Vibhavadi Rangsit, looked like somewhere between Central Ladprao and Don Muang.
As for the airport being closed, it was supposedly closed for departures only. Too little notice to divert inbound traffic. I wouldn't want to be trying to get a taxi out of the swamp, however...
I doubt it will last long, since the returning PM was the target of the protests. Just get on the plane, and let the hotel know you might be a bit late...

Prime Minster Somchai has instructed the Defence Ministry to draft a state of emergency law to be approved by the Cabinet after he returns to Thailand Wednesday, a source said.
The source said Somchai would fly to Chiang Mai from Peru and would use a military plane to travel to Bangkok to call an urgent Cabinet meeting....

All my time on here, without a post and my first one is about the airport!
Air Asia have cancelled ALL FLIGHTS in and out of Thailand today. They will not resume flights until the situation at Suvarnabhumi is resolved.
So for those suggesting its just an outbound problem it wont be that for long. The airlines wont send planes in that they cannot get out.
Surely, someone has to finally realise that PAD need to be dealt with firmly, at least in this regard?
And yes, my vested interest is a flight due to arrive there from KL tomorrow morning

The airport has been on total shutdown since 4am this morning...nothing in or out, except PAD of course who are free to roam wherever the f*ck they want , assh*les

The shoot up on Rangsit rd soi 3 was scary, I wonder why the footage shown on the BBC of the motrobike taxi pleading for his life on hand and knee's waiing the PAD attackers whilst the waved a friggin big machete at him and then held it to his throat before the camera changed position, was not shown on any Thai News channel at all, and was only shown on the BBC twice all night.

PAD vows to shut down Suvarnabhumi airport until Somchai resigns

The spokesman of the People's Alliance for Democracy announced Wednesday that the protesters would occupy and shut down the Suvanarbhumi International Airport until Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat resigns.
PAD spokesman Parnthep Wongpuaphan said the PAD regarded that the Somchai government had lost legitimacy to govern because it attempted to help former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to escape legal punishments.
