I'm sick of being overseas and seeing my fellow countrypeople disgrace Australia's good name and reputation by doing stupid shit like this. Hope they give her plenty of time to think about disrespecting the rules in a foreign country.
Why am I pissed off? Many Australians who travel overseas, particularly the bogan (surburban rednecks) idiots on cheap package holidays, think that given their relative wealth in countries like LOS or Bali, they can act like kings & queens and give no regard to local rules or customs.
I don't want the generally good reputation of Aussies ruined by retards who get drunk and can't control themselves and end up in the international media as a result. The cultural cringe I get on the flight over is bad enough... (tshirts, boardshorts & flipflops are the package tourist's uniform).

Yes it was a silly thing to do and yes a lot of aussies in Phuket are yobbo's but jesus christ its a bit over the top by the police isnt it, surely they could just slap her with a fine. Recently I have heard of a few incidence where thai police have been over the top with tourists. In my opinion Thailand is going downhill as a tourist destination and Im not just referring to this case. I used to love the place but now ive lost my desire to go there. As for the Aussie bar I cant stand that place anyway the staff in there are miserable !!! hope everyone boycotts the place

Well, isn't it all about putting all the problems this country has on foreigners like us? Of course it's kind of silly stealing something but look at recent developments here: raids for copy products happen in prime tourist areas only - never ever was a shop raided that sells to thai. Then the poor little 9 year old boy that is looking for his japanese father and even the Politicians and TV stations get involved when we all know that thousands of boys are looking for their Thai fathers and no one helps them - they get ignored and dumped.
And it's going to get worse - they're starting to feel the pain due to the economical crisis - and they can't handle the pressure - thus using the rich foreigners as scape goats.

A couple of weeks I was sitting in a Pattaya beer bar near Soi 4 and saw a guy walking around with the McDonald statue which he took from the McDonald near Soi 6.
By the time he got to Soi 2, police caught up with him and ordered him to return it. Quite funny to see this guy walking back with two police officers on a motorcycle in tow.
Later he passed by again laughing. The bar girls scolded him (jokingly).
Everybody was in good moods.. unlike this thing in Phuket.

Kathu Police Superintendent Grissak Songmoonnark has defended the actions of his men in detaining Aussie holidaymaker Annice Smoel for stealing a branded bar towel from the Aussie Bar in Patong earlier this month.
Smoel’s case isn’t the first time the Aussie sense of humor has backfired on the streets of Patong, he revealed.
“We once had a case of an Australian man who stole a shirt from a deaf-mute [street vendor]. He ran away, but was later caught. After he was apprehended, he said he was just playing a joke on the vendor. This is not a joke. If we don’t catch this bad guy, the deaf guy loses his shirt,” he said.

Well from the news here in Aus tonight, she got fined 38 Aud for her shit, and paid for by the governer of Phuket.
She and her Husband are getting out of Phuket asap and heading back to Aus they hope tonight.
Hope she learnt a lesson, dont get pissed and piss off the local police.
Stupid white rubbish.

Getting tired of liberals that reward stupidity and criminal activity.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the Thai Police fairly well for a farang and don't agree with the way they operate majority of the time.
However, hate to see a drunk and stupid act get reward!!!
Get the story that another lady place the mat in her purse and the other story that that lady actually admitted it to the police at the time of the incident and the story that she didn't know the mat was in her purse in the first place!!!! Of course the police story is also suspect, though the facts are: drunk, stolen item in one's possession..........sounds guilty to me!!!
