Damn, I'm losing count on all the scams/ripoffs I'm reading about here and elsewhere
I'll be traveling to LOS with a much more eyes open cautious approach, trust no one
In 7 years have had one bad experience, was shorted 1k bt at a monev xchg, needless to say I learned to always re-count the transaction before walking away

Sounds like another backpacker idiot...lolol. No one I know ever takes their money belt off when going through anything, but this idiot obviously had placed metal in it. I mean come on, who in their right mind places a cell phone in their money belt....lolol. And I doubt his interpretation of the reaction to a measely $260....lolol. And why would anyone in their right mind be taking that much baht out of the Country, especially a backpacker. This sounds more like a backpacker scam to me....lolol.

The last few times I went through the security check at the airport they requested that I took off my belt and put it through the scanner.

Yep, Danish and British Embassy have issued warnings. That's 2 out of how many in Thailand? So where are the facts? So far no concrete proof apart from one couple that made an official complaint and it appears that they have been caught on security cameras stealing.
Rosy coloured glasses? Say what you want. This and other forums are full of some of the most laughable and outlandish complaints about supposed scams in Thailand that I don't even bother to read them anymore. Either I and my mates have been very lucky to avoid these cunning Thai scams during our 15-20 year terms in Thailand or we are just too cunning for the locals.
My guess is that this and numerous other alleged scams are just urban legends.

Last night, 7:40pm on Thai TV Channel 7, big expose on the King Power shoplifting cases, slammed King Power of being behind it all, laughed at the KP execs and AIT execs showing them round the airport. They also went into the baggage thefts which apparently are an even bigger issue, baggage staff rifling the suitcases after you check them in, they interviewed a Thai guy who had a handheld Garmin stolen from his suitcase and others.
The program was braodcast as an expose and a WARNING to THAI travellers warning them to securely lock their suitcases, carry valuables in hand held and avoid King Power duty free shops unless they wanted to become victims with no recourse.
Pretty FACTUAL to me.
For the consipiracy theorists I do offer this though...
Why are the government very clever at covering up scams, shootouts, murders in local press but they've let the KP thing escalate to these proportions, even being covered on mainstream Thai news programs at prime time ?
Wouldn't be anything to do with KP's relationship with Thaksin would it ? A government orchestrated set-up campaign allowing the government to take decisive action on protecting tourists and Thais alike by removing KP from the airport and putting their own money spinner in place ?

Suvarnabhumi crackdown next week

A major crackdown on illegal taxis and unlicensed guides will be conducted at Suvarnabhumi airport starting July 28, according to a notice put up by the Airports of Thailand Plc in the airport on Wednesday.
The crackdown will be jointly carried out by AoT, which is the airport operator.
It is enlisting the Land Transport Department and Special Operations Division, provincial police from Samut Prakan and tourist police to help.
The move came after Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum made an inspection trip to the airport and ordered the AoT to step up measures to prevent extortion gangs preying on foreign air passengers.
Mr Sohpon managed to avoid any comment on worldwide reports of an organised gang operating from duty-free shops, whose members have reportedly cheated tens of thousands of baht from foreign tourists.
The reports claim that the gangs, apparently operating in collusion with shop employees and rogue policemen, intimidate and browbeat accused foreign shoplifters and thieves into paying large "fines" in order to escape lengthy incarceration and trial and return to their own countries.
At least one European country has warned its citizens not to shop in the duty-free area of Suvarnabhumi at all, and the alleged cheating has been featured in reports by the BBC, among others.
The duty-free scams are in addition to the longtime Bangkok airport problems of so-called "black-licence taxis" which have no authorisation to carry passengers, and airport touts who try to steer naive arriving tourists to unwanted hotels and shady businesses.
