There are pavement bars that take advantage of punters.
Normal prices for a can of coke should be 40 baht, soda water 20 baht and a bottle of Singha shouldn't be more than 80 baht.
Mind you that some bars might charge you dearly for a drink for one of their 'employees' (which in fact are street walking freelancers) or charge a barfine.

A few times I have taken a taxi from Soi 11, and down through Soi 13 to head up Sukhumvit. I know EXACTLY the corner these Africans are hanging out, and I was like WTF is going on here.
The "Farang Ghetto" of lower Sukhumvit should really be changed now to just "THE Ghetto".

A couple of years ago I was sitting at one of the Suk pavement bars, guess around Soi 15 and 1 am ish, just people watching.
The lady who ran the bar said, "Where your lady?"
me, "No have"
girl, "OK I go get you one"
She was fine as well, I bought her a drink, had a chat and she stayed with me all night, no problems. Of course all my valuables were locked away, but sometimes in life you have to take a risk or two.
FWIW I don't go with as many FLs as I probably ought to given the price of bar fines and the money I spend on lady drinks.

once upon a time it used to be fun, now, it's not, and quite simply, its dangerous, not only on the street, but also back on the room. BG's outside of work at that hour, drunk, are no better than Brit louts, they are scary, loud and aggressive, I speak thai, am polite and don't tend to do the late night scene, however a few newby freinds over from HK in tow I had to, I had no less than 3 girls at different stops along the area get very aggressive simply for speaking Thai, apparently I was messing it up for them and they were not afraid to tell me I wasn't going to be safe.
I brushed it off, ( stupidly I don't scare easily, let me reitereate, STUPIDLY) but nothing happened, but these girls at those hours are not the nice P4P gals we're looking for.

This is what I find ironic...
Now I know Soi Asok is the dividing line between Police juristictions of Thong Lor, and which ever is west of Asoke. Probably Silom (I am not sure).
Numerous times over the years in the Soi 23 and 31 area I have been stopped in a Taxi at checkpoints by police, stopped coming out of establishments in the area, stopped going to take a piss in the bushes. Most of the time they have checked my pockets for drugs, and even asked for my passport.
Then lets also look at past huge raids on clubs like Qbar, or Bed.
Has anyone ever seen Police randomly stopping people in the Ghetto of lower Suk? Any checkpoints ever established down there? The sleaze in lower Sukhumvit would be easy pickings you would think.

You'd think some cops could be making career enhancing drug busts if they just raid the whole of lower Sukh a couple of times a week -- meThinks that their bosses get their pockets lined by some of the ghetto scum.
Recent articles appear to support that Russian and African pimps, drug dealers cohort with the police of that same region.
The solution really is simple - do not stay in the Farang Ghetto during your trips, and prefer a hotel outside of it. Easy enough to do.
