Quote: from quack quack on 1:38 pm on May 14, 2010 Wonder how pro tennis players some times play + two hour matches at the Aussie open & sometimes at Roland Garos, in + 40 degree C temps ?
That's why they are called "professional" tennis players; you and me are called "amateur" tennis players..... furthermore, they are motivated by the big prize money if they win

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 9 September 2010 :- Thailand may be hotter by 4 degrees in next 3 decades ================================== In the next 35 years, the temperature in Thailand will rise by 4 degrees Celsius, which will result in the eastern provinces getting inundated in 300 millimetres of rainfall every year, an expert said yesterday. The Southeast Asia START Regional Research Centre's director Arnon Sanidwong na Ayudhaya was speaking at an academic conference held by the Office of the Higher Education Commission yesterday. His analysis was based on eight climate prediction models over the next 35-55 years. The models, dividing Thailand into eight geological and geographic zones and looking into factors including temperature, rainfall and sea-level changes, found that in the next 35 years the country's average temperature would rise by 3-4 degrees, particularly in the mountainous areas of the North. The temperatures would rise in the rainy season and winter months, thus further narrowing the difference between summer and winter times, he said. Climate change also functions as a reinforcing factor for the severe urban heat island phenomenon, in which a metropolitan area is significantly warmer than its surroundings at all times, he said. The rise in temperature would affect people's metabolic systems and cause deaths. The models also showed that sea levels would rise by 14-15 centimetres, affecting the coastal areas from Bangkok to Rayong and Phetchaburi all the way to Narathiwat, he said. Levels of rainfall would also be different from one place to another. For example, the Northeast and the West could have about 70-100mm of rain, while the East might end up with 300mm, leading to severe flooding. Citing various countries' climate models, Arnon pointed out that by the year 2100, the number of severe floods would rise and occur three to six times in every 100 years compared with the previous frequency of one such flood in a century. Since Thailand is sensitive to floods and landslides, he said settlements on riverbanks and coastal areas should be reviewed because these areas face a severe risk of flooding in the future. If nothing is done to prevent this, the country will suffer economic and social losses, he said.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 25 October 2010 :- Chao Phraya continues to rise ================== The water level in the Chao Phraya River in flood-stricken Ayutthaya could rise even higher, with runoff from the North expected to reach Bangkok within the next two days, Royal Irrigation Department deputy director-general Weera Wongsaengnak said on Monday. "Water is flowing into the Chao Phraya at Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district at about 3,275 cubic metres per second but it could get higher due to the northern runoff and high tides during this period. "Authorities will try to prevent the rate from exceeding 3,500 metres per second," Mr Weera said. He said the northern runoff surge iwould likely reach the capital by Wednesday. Officials will try to maintain the level at no more than 2.5 metres by slowing down the runoff, to allow Bangkok to get through the high tide period this Wednesday 27 October 2010. Officials will prevent the water level in the Chao Phraya Dam from exceeding 17.1 metres above normal level, he said. "The department can deal with this crisis, but people need to closely monitor brth the flood barriers and the water level closely," Mr Weera said.

Report from The Nation dated Monday 25 October 2010 :- Bangkok on full alert - Flows from North due as rainwaters set to break from Chao Phya Dam ==================================== Flood waters flowing down from the North will hit Bangkok next week, inundating homes and areas near the Chao Phya River and tributary canals, with the high-tide period next Tuesday and Wednesday being the most dangerous. The warning from the Royal Irrigation Department yesterday came with more bad news: maritime traffic in most natural waterways in the entire Chao Phya basin in the Central region, covering many provinces, will be paralysed by strong currents both during the period and subsequently. The excessive volumes of rainwater trapped in areas in the lower Ping and Yom River basins will exceed the capacity of the Chao Phya Dam in Chai Nat province. The dam traps rainwater between the North and the Central region before releasing it southward to Bangkok, the Agriculture Ministry said. The Royal Irrigation Department has advised those living by the Chao Phya or canals in Bangkok to stay alert and move their belongings to higher positions to avoid damage in the event of floods. The embankment walls built to ward off the threat of flooding along the Chao Phya in the Central provinces north of Bangkok have resulted in the water rising to a higher level than usual. After two weeks of countrywide inundation, the government yesterday set up a war room to deal with the flooding - in Bangkok only - in the coming days. Secretary to the PM Korbsak Sabhavasu said extra attention was being given to prevent the capital from being flooded in the next few days when the waters reach Bangkok. The Interior Ministry yesterday ordered an action plan to deal with the flooding in the Central region, which has been badly hit for many days. During an inspection visit by Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul to Nonthaburi province, Ayutthaya Governor Witthaya Phewphong complained that all flood-prevention efforts and media attention were now being directed towards Bangkok while his province had been neglected. Witthaya made a specific request for flat-bed boats to enable evacuation of people and transport of their properties, as it is now too late to carry out any preventive measures in his province, which is flooded regularly each year during the wet season. A Bangkok Metropolitan Administration official said during the meeting that a final 1.2-kilometre stretch of permanent flood dykes along the Chao Phya River could not be built in time, but temporary 3-metre sandbag embankments had been put in place. Samut Prakan Governor Cherdsak Choosri said that as his province bordered the sea, it would suffer heavy flooding. He said major thoroughfares such as Srinagarindra and Sukhumvit roads could be briefly but heavily flooded before all the water drained off into the sea.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 27 October 2010 :- Bangkok survives but round 2 coming - More rain, runoff and high tides coming in early Nov 2010 =================================== Bangkok survived yesterday's "perfect storm" scenario - when a combination of rain, runoff from the North and peak seasonal tides failed to raise the Chao Phraya River beyond its 2.5m-high flood barriers - but residents in riverside areas in other provinces weren't so lucky. City officials remain wary about further rain and runoff from the North, as the capital faces another high tide period from November 6-10, 2010.

Quote: from bkkz on 7:08 am on Oct. 31, 2010 Weather here is beautiful now... nice and cool, great day for a walk.
... for those not living in Thailand, the turn of seasons here is as a light switch... I think the dry season is upon us. ... the rains inundating the north will take a few days to drain, having little effect on BKK... no impact on local transportation about town. ... the last few days have been wonderfully temperate, with a great breeze throughout the day. ... yes... the season is upon us.
