Somewhere along the line you will get the idea that most posters on this forum really do not give a shit what happens this weekend.... Let it burn...

China Sailor,

It's easy to say that because you are not in Bangkok.... I believe that you are in the very "fine, fine, fine" peaceful city of Singapore, away from LOS???

If you are staying in Bangkok you would be very concerned

I am concerned only in the sense that I am due into the airport on 23rd.
As long as I can get in and back out a week later, no problem.
Traffic congestion caused by red shirts will make no difference at all from what I can see, based on my last trip when suk ground to a halt for 5 hours one Friday late afternoon, no exageration.
I got out and walked three miles to my hotel and when I had taken a shower and called the driver of the car I had been in they had not moved an inch! said it was normal for Friday!

Quite evidently, thousands of Thais who support the reds don't either. I had occasion recently to talk to a highly educated Thai industry professional who was unabashed and almost merry in his support for toxin. That surprised me greatly. The guy seemed to be going on and on about the illegal way the present government came in, etc, but seemed to think nothing of the multi billion tax fraud of the previous government that set it all off.

I doubt there's much chance of facts until 'after the fact'

I agree. It becomes very difficult to find the facts before they happen.

... yeah, China Sailor... Thailand has done a pretty effective job over the last couple of years of marginalizing itself in the eyes of the world... Thailand is looking more and more as Cambodia, Laos and Burma, with but a thin veil of civility shrouding the sad reality of this country's inferior culture.

... what happens in Thailand merits no more mention in the international press than when a Burmese lord of war wipes out a village that threatens his drug business... the Thai fight between its elite feudal lords and the oppressed, illiterate millions really has no material bearing in the rest of the world.

... outside of Thailand, who really cares anymore?

I don't, except when innocent people are put out or suffer at the hands of a relativity small group of trouble makers.

With a visit planned next week and a bunch of cash money that should benefit LOS, anybody who tries to disrupt the airport which is the life line for economic help to the average Thai needs to be taken out by whatever means necessary.

These worthless mis-fits getting in the way of completely innocent foreingers should be at the least gassed and if that's not enough taken away in body bags, there're doing a lot more harm than good.

I got stuck w/the Yellow Shirt take over, my sympathy with protesters is gone.

Today is D-Day.................

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 11 March 2010 :-

Red shirts to march at noon Friday, confrontation expected
====================================

Friday at midday, the red shirt will commence marching from across the country and plan to overcome every checkpoint in order to reach Bangkok, rally organiser Jatuporn Promphan said on Thursday.

A crucial place to watch is the checkpoint at Pratunam Phra In in Ayutthaya where four battalions of security forces have been deployed to block the red shirts, Jatuporn said.

"The red shirts plan to break through if the security forces try to stop them and the event will be broadcast live via the People's Channel," he said.

The crackdown on the red shirts, if happened, would speed up the government's downfall, he said.

Errr.... I will be traveling throughout LOS during the whole period and I am not concerned.

To tell you the truth, all of the security analysts discussing the Thailand situation are saying it is a lot of 'Hype' put forth by the government in order to justify invoking the Security Act so they can arrest the protest leaders.

All the Red's have going for them is the ability to put enough people on the street and generate pressure from the rest of the world to settle this issue by new elections.

If the Red's resort to violence then they lose world opinion and will be crushed by the better organized and better armed security forces.

My advice is to go about your business and stay away from protest sites and you will be fine...

EDIT IN: Thanks for the list BK.

It is interesting to see that Lumpini Park is one of the sites that will have a protest. A lot of Embassies in that area including the US Embassy. Kinda supports the view that the Reds are looking for International support for their cause.

Good thing I decided to forgo the Conrad this time and conduct my business from an apartment in upper Sukhumvit ...

EDIT IN AGAIN: What to avoid.... from CNN:

Places to Avoid in Bangkok

Yep...

The government will let them, and do nothing -- until the Red Shirts get violent, and then a crackdown will be justified.

Either way, Abhisit's laissez faire way of marginalizing the Thaksinites has worked well so far.
