... so, the question now is: will the entitled elites and (more importantly) the Army generals, allow the election to stand?

... maybe... if the Army generals accept the end of aristocratic control and submit to control by the newly rich Thai-Chinese families, we might be witnessing a milestone in Thai governance... a shift from corrupt aristocratic-monarchal control to corrupt Russian-style oligrachy... a clepocracy.

... given the Thai Army's history, I sort of doubt they will stay in barracks... they will be under great pressure by monarchists to get them back the control... although, for a big enough share of the corruption, Thaksin might buy them off... there could thereafter be no talk of coups "to protect the King", as that flag will be permanently retired (notwithstanding a break within the ranks of the generals, which is too frightening to contemplate).

There may be no choice by the monarchists, given the health issues there is a phantom ruler now and if change should occur any time soon, there is no reverence by the Thai people for the next...

The Thai people have spoken loudly! How do you tactfully invalidate the election, without having another bloody May? The monarchist have been dealt a loosing hand and given the Thai's penchant to save face and avoid conflict, the time for the monarchist is to negotiate, posture and hope the future turns their way.

... I hear what you are saying CalEden... but, the difficulty with elitists is their extraordinary myopia... I've witnessed this class of Thais do things that defy all logic, but that of a 13-year old girl... this might be no different.

... I believe the Thai aristocracy and monarchists are no different than the Arab tribal chieftains... bolstered by generations of inbred entitled superiority, they might be oblivious to the reality coming down all around them.

... a democratic majority has spoken... loudly... will the monarchists push for the military to put the unwashed heathens in their places?... do they 'get' that the tired old "saving the monarchy" rationale for past coups no longer has juice with the millions of marginalized prai who have at last found their voice?

... I agree that nothing will happen immediately, until the monarchists have measured the field and probed for weaknesses (as they perceive them, probably wrongly).

... I think this is not over... left to the disconnected inbred elitists, any effort they make to subvert the election in the slightest way could lead to an immediate, forceful response by the Reds.

... the Reds will hold to their newfound freedom with guns, knives and hoes... as they should... no real freedom will endure unless it is fought for.

... I see this as the first step into an ugly period of different corrupt leaders who will continue looting the country... a generation, maybe more, will be required to get through this ugly period before a "re-revolution" to go after institutional corruption evolves... think Chicago politics early 1900's (or, even now, somewhat).

... first small steps... now that they've won it, will they be brave enough to defend it.

HEY JOE

"Hey joe, where you goin' with that gun of your hand,
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand,
Oh, I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady,
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man."

-- Jimi Hendrix

... DG... written about a guy headed to kill his chick for screwing around... not exactly the case here, but I guess we get your intention.

... try this, by one of the greatest:

FIVE TO ONE

"Five to one, baby
One in five
No one here gets out alive, now
You get yours, baby
I'll get mine
Gonna make it, baby
If we try

The old get old
And the young get stronger
May take a week
And it may take longer
They got the guns
But we got the numbers
Gonna win, yeah
We're takin' over
Come on!"

'Hey Joe', was the final song performed at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969, but was actually first popularized by an LA-based band called The Leaves in 1965.

I was in Boston the summer of '69
Almost went to Woodstock but did not in the end.
Sure wish I had gone even if the traffic was horrific.

As for Thailand evolutionary politics.....
the monarchists may have to settle for a British type monarchy with a grandchild assuming the role in years to come as the present heir seems to be unacceptable to all but a few.
If they will, constitutional democracy just might become the order of the future here. But the corruption will take a while to subside as information technology slowly shines light on the truth. Sometimes, as was said, chaos comes first, then order.
May Yingluck be better for the country than anyone expects.
The Thai people are long overdue for equal opportunity and a fair shake.

Only the drug dealers don't want him around, sure he had many killed for being junkies, but hey there gone and one less mad strung out junkie wielding a machete at you for you money or watch.
Yes that was a great success story I noticed this last time I was in bangkok Khlong thoey district [not ]. Anyway we still have a place reserved for Thatsin in the hague alongside Ghadafi and others who take it onto themselves to murder citizens without trial. As The only way poor thai have of making money is with the pussy or drugs trade and the demand is and will always be there a child of 5 could work out it wont work like that. I would think the only way to stop or change the jabba culture is a ) get rid of poverty and give equal opportunitys to all not only the rich or those selling the drug we call alcohol b) find a more healthy substitute as the demand is obviously there.c. education and then the truth not lies. d. start of legal medicinal mariuauna and other less harmfull drugs.

If that fails make alcohol illegal and start killing people good for votes but bad for humanity. Drug problems if there are any outside of those casued by these futile drug wars are ' HEALTH ISSUES '. Easy to control but when these became criminal issues ' and this could happen with coffee its a barter item in prison ' then things get outta hand. But thats the hidden agenda
of all of these asswipes create the problem and then pretend they are sorting it out when all they are do is line the pockets .

I really feel sorry for these people jaba is shit I would not use it if it was free but this is their reality and the way the governement goes about controlling it [ have seen first hand ] is pitiful but I hope there is justice somewhere somehow just not if your thai and poor.
But that can be carbon copied in around the globe.

Heineken is the worlds largest wholesale drug dealer btw and they have prime time tv slots to advertise this addicitve drug so is the world f***ed up in a nutshell yes.

But that all being said I wish her well with the 4 or 5 party coalition and lets hope she learned from the mistakes of her elder brother.

Yingluck, would be really stupid not to bring the military into the fold through immediate strong moves, especially after her brother lost power through a military coup. During the bloody red two months the military was initially really hesitant to move against the reds.

Yingluck seems like the joker in the pack sprung on the electorate at the eleventh hour. Two months ago the world, nay many Thais, had not heard of Yingluck. Could the surprise also spring the other way back on her brother, I wonder.

Could Yingluck have a mind and a spirit of her own? Might she find this landslide win an eyeopener to a brave new world ? Might she decide to toe no one's line but set her own agenda ? Not many political figures in history, or in current times, have enjoyed this sort of a victory. Many have squandered the advantage surely.

But Yingluck just might realise she has a great opportunity to carve a niche for herself in Thai history if she makes genuine attempts to bridge the deep fissures in Thai society. Who knows ? The proxy pawn of 2011 might well decide she wants to play a bigger, independent role of her own and become the pivot for all Thais to rally round. No harm in dreaming at least.
