Reuters January 13, 2012, 11:38 pm BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai authorities have arrested a Lebanese suspect after being warned by Israel of a possible attack in Bangkok, the deputy prime minister said on Friday, adding that police had stepped up security and he was confident the situation was under control. "A Lebanese suspect from the Hezbollah group has been taken into custody by Thai officials and police are investigating further," Chalerm Yoobamrung told Reuters. "Following concern raised by the Israeli embassy about a possible attack by a group of Lebanese terrorists in Bangkok, Thai police officials had been coordinating with Israeli officials since before the New Year." Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha said Thai and U.S. intelligence officials were monitoring the movements of other individuals and were stepping up precautions in areas deemed to be at risk such as tourist sites and Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport. A defence ministry source said Israeli intelligence had contacted Thai officials on December 22 with information that two or three suspects could be planning an attack in Thailand. However, the individuals travelled to the south and left the country. The Israelis alerted Thai officials again on January 8 of the danger of an attack around January 13 to 15 in areas where there are often large concentrations of Western tourists, such as the Khao San Road, which is popular with young backpackers. The arrest was made after the second Israeli warning, the source said, adding that Thai security officials were working closely with the United States and Israel. Defence Minister Yuthasak said the Israeli embassy and synagogues could also be targeted and that the attacks could come in the form of car bombs. "Thai officials had not intended to release the news at this time since it could have an impact on tourism and cause panic among citizens," he said, noting that the U.S. embassy naturally was concerned about the safety of Americans. Earlier, the U.S. embassy had warned of a possible attack by "foreign terrorists" and told its citizens to be careful in areas of the capital frequented by tourists. "We're warning all U.S. citizens to take caution when visiting public areas where Western tourists are known to gather in Bangkok," said Walter Braunohler, a spokesman at the embassy, declining to give further details. Bangkok, a magnet for tourists with its vibrant nightlife and a transit point for those heading for Thailand's beaches, has gone through periods of violent political turmoil in recent years but threats of foreign attacks are rare. Hezbollah, a Shi'ite Islamist group in Lebanon backed by Syria and Iran, is on the official U.S. blacklist of foreign terrorist organisation

Much easier to bomb nana plaza than the us military! Obama may turn a blind eye to bombing of nana plaza. He cannot do that if military were attacked.

Report from AsiaOne dated 13 January 2012 :- Thailand detains suspect after US terrorist warning ===================================== BANGKOK - Thai authorities said on Friday they had detained a Lebanese man with suspected links to the Hezbollah militant group, after the United States warned of a terrorist threat against tourists in the kingdom. "Foreign terrorists may be currently looking to conduct attacks against tourist areas in Bangkok in the near future," the US embassy in Bangkok said in an emergency message posted on its website. "US citizens are urged to exercise caution when visiting public areas where large groups of Western tourists gather in Bangkok." A Thai senior intelligence officer who did not want to be named told AFP that the kingdom had been informed before the New Year by Israel of a possible threat. The suspect was detained on Thursday while the other man had already fled the country, he said. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung told AFP by telephone that the detained suspect was being questioned by the Thai authorities. "We already have one suspect in custody for interrogation at a government building in Bangkok. He is a Hezbollah from Lebanon," he said. "I want to assure people that there is nothing to worry about. The police will take care of the situation and everything will be under control." Hezbollah, an Iranian- and Syrian-backed Muslim Shiite group, is blacklisted as a terrorist organisation by Washington and currently dominates the Lebanese government. "Israel was suspicious that these two men might be terrorists, so they gave information, including their names, to our police before the New Year," the senior intelligence officer said. The suspect has denied involvement with any terrorist activities, he added. "These two men entered Thailand a while ago but did not conduct any terrorist activity. I wonder why Israel was suspicious about them." The warning is another blow to Thailand's tourist-friendly image, which was badly dented last year by devastating flooding across much of the country, as well as rounds of rival political protests in recent years. In 2008 a nine-day blockade by "Yellow Shirt" protesters stranded tens of thousands of travellers, and the industry was badly hit again in 2010 during "Red Shirt" street demonstrations. Bangkok's central shopping area was reduced to a battle zone during an army crackdown on the rallies, and more than 90 people were left dead. An eight-year-old shadowy insurgency continues to plague the country's Muslim-majority deep south, but the rebels have never been known to attack outside of the region. The insurgents are not thought to be part of a global jihad movement but rather are rebelling against a long history of perceived discrimination against ethnic Malay Muslims by governments in the Buddhist-majority country. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra also told reporters that authorities in the kingdom had the current situation under control. "I would like to tell our people and tourists that there is nothing to worry about," she said. In the most prominent terrorist attack in Southeast Asia in recent history, 202 people - most of them foreign tourists - were killed in 2002 by bombings on the Indonesian island of Bali. In August 2003, alleged mastermind Riduan Isamuddin, an Indonesian known as Hambali, was arrested in Thailand. He was suspected of being Al-Qaeda's representative in Southeast Asia and operational chief of Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiyah.

I will tell you what I think- The Israelis are planning a big hit later in the year maybe on Iran- The CIA know western public opinion is crucial in the after math- So where can you hit pretty well every nationality from farang land (and throw in a few Arabs and japanese and south koreans? Yep ! Pussy - land!! :: The Iranian Nuclear Guy cut down by the Israeli agent last week - is an example of the fear going on as Iran draws closer to a Nuclear weapon- So imagine you place a large bomb inside Nana plaza on a Saturday night Say about dead centre where the blast kills dozens maybe a hundred on impact- (but not big enough to stop a mass exit-) The only way out is the Soi 4 entrance and a few hundred injured etc stagger that way- Then the second bomb expodes a much bigger one disguised as a Fruit cart- Killing hundreds- Then finally as Bangkok and the world get news of this Horror- (as scores of ambulances attend and thousands run out onto the aftermath) - A Car sitting there the whole while- Just far enough away to withstand prior bombs- Say where the Nanna carpark is - the Ambulance carpark choosen Hundreds of Freelancers from disco patrons suddenly hit the streets (from the downstairs nanna hotel disco) there is 3000 people (including professionals and Police and Hotel guests ) carnage everywhere- Then the car with by far the greatest amount of explosives (right in the car parks centre expodes) 1000 killed- Iran is implicated - World is cool with seeing revenge- Israel with USA support launch a themo nuclear strike on the Mountain area where the Enrichment is being done- Far fetched? maybe- But dont always buy the line pumped out by intelligence forces- Suddenly Bangkok is a Focus - Why? It ticks all the boxes- As someone else said soft target ( diverse mix) You need to nuke someone ? Better take down 50-100 of each main players nationals first - Then have good evidence the Guys your aiming to Hit with the Nuke - look guilty for it- Just my two bahts worth- last night I thought the risk was small- After reading the Iranians are being blamed - and the Israelis are involved - I am staying away from Nana and the other packed Joints- Ko san road would be another place- Whore mongers dont get the same sympathy in death as disco kids from that area- (ps dont worry........its just my imagination running wild)

Plans to attack Bangkok cancelled source: BangkokPost The Hezbollah militant group has cancelled its plans to attack public areas in Bangkok, police chief Priewpan Damapong said on Saturday. Pol Gen Priew said that a Lebanese man detained earlier at Suvarnabhumi Airport had told police that the planned terrorist attacks in Bangkok had been scrapped because Thailand’s security units had learned about the plans. The man's arrest had prompted the United States and Israel to issue warnings that tourist venues in Bangkok could be terror targets. Asked whether the arrested suspect had revealed details of the attack plans, the police chief said he could not provide any more information. “I can only tell you at the moment that the attack plans have been cancelled”, he said.
