Bimlee, none of the businesses you mention in your post of the 26th are likely to show much of a profit,or any profit at all, especially for a non Thai beginner.

Any competitive advantages they might initially enjoy in terms of location or price will soon be lost as new competitors start up close by,or existing longer established competitors lower their prices.

The basic difficulty, so far as making a decent profit is concerned, all of the business types you mention have is that there are so many of them with little of substance to differentiate one from another, except for sustained superior service which a beginner is unlikely to have the experience to provide.

Even if a beginner does provide better service than longer established competitors, the sheer number of businesses will ensure that superiority will only be slowly recognised so that the business is likely fail, unless the beginner has enough financial reserves to keep going in what is probably going to be a lengthy period without much, or any profit.

The solution is to identify a need which consumers have, and for which they are prepared to pay well, but which cannot be satisfied except by particular skills that are in short supply.

Examples are very skilled professionals who provide solutions to difficult and complex problems where wealthy clients have large sums of money at stake.Hedge funds, investment bakers, and divorce lawyers come to mind.

But opportunities need not be restricted to those who provide services to the mega rich.Bimlee perhaps you could provide advice to Thais who are contemplating starting a business in India?

Thailand is actually very easy to do business in because it is so corrupt.

... way wrong, Koolbreeze... while making things happen illegally in Thailand is easy, the exposure you create for yourself far outweighs the benefits of a culture of corruption.

... once you are in, you are forever held hostage to a threat of blackmail, extortion, or worse.

... take the example of Sondhi, the Yellow Shirt's protest leader who played a big role in overthrowing Thaksin (see article excerpt below)... he was just sentenced to 20 years... Thaksin's Reds did not get him for his violent political activities, but for a fraudulent loan he made 15 YEARS AGO with state-owned Krung Thai Bank.

... formerly allied with Thaksin, now enemies... guess what, his past illegal transgressions with his good, good buddy Thaksin are now his noose.

... for a farang, that could be a Thai ex-wife in whose name your business is registered... or, your Thai business partner with 51% share control who decides he nlonger needs you... or, the Thai nominee you pay to falsely "own" majority shares in the illegal nominee company Thai attorneys are notorious for creating for foreigners to "own" their Thai property.

... a foreigner going crooked in Thailand is a short walk from a court room... he's got to be prepared to be hard core corrupt... as corrupt as the Thais.

Thai protest chief gets prison for financial crime
Feb 28, 2012 8:14 PM EST

A Thai protest leader whose movement helped topple three prime ministers was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison for falsifying financial documents aimed at securing a $32 million government bank loan for his media empire.

Sondhi Limthongkul faces separate charges in connection with the aggressive protests of his People's Alliance for Democracy, or Yellow Shirts, who in 2008 occupied the prime minister's offices for three months and Bangkok's two airports for a week. The group is still active, though less influential.

The 64-year-old Sondhi pleaded guilty to crimes involving documents he submitted for his Manager Media Group to secure a 1 billion baht loan in 1997 from the state Krung Thai Bank.
