Pyrro, I think that essentially the philosophy of assimiliation is fantastic and I do believe it to be essentially Hindu. However as you said "the less educated use machetes at every excuse"... Well, I've only spent 6 weeks travelling around India in moderate to shabby hotels, 2nd class trains but occasionally staying or eating nicer, etc... and about 99% of the millions of people I saw were "less educated" and poor living in an absolute filth that constitutes the population centers of India, to say nothing of the chaos. The idea that these people could lead the world to any sort of enlightenment (unless you are eating hash cookies from the government shop 555) strikes me as... bold. Of course neither one book nor one trip is going to explain a vast ancient nation to anybody, of course. You've probably traveled more and read more about it than I have. PS I do think your ideas of might and right are a little vague however. In the "old days"? Well, any army of 3000 little men could overwhelm one big man if motivated to do so... But slaves in the "old days" were neither little nor weak in body or spirit. Have you never heard of the Mamalukes of Egypt or the Jannisary Corps of Turkey (probably the first standing army of Europe), both extremely effective military units, or any other slave army?.. What makes a man strong enough to enslave a people has always been better weapons, better organization, more money or better technology. That is and has always been "might" enough. Not his personal body's height. I don't think many Southerners (US) on this board are going to appreciate being called "teeny weeny" either 555 Which "old days" are you talking about? A caveman with his clan? That's the only historical situation I can imagine, one devoid of human society, in which the pure physical force of one individual is going to enslave others for a lasting time.

Caste System: ~ In old days, the son used to take up his father's profession. This came to be known as his caste. ~ Nobody could really to explain to me why this assumed such malicious proportions in the community. I need to spend more time in understanding this. ~ Even these days, I find people talking of caste - but this is more to do with supporting one's own caste than about putting down lower castes. And again there is a large part of India where the caste-system has become defunct. MG ~ India's partitioning happened because of a certain "Nehru-Jinnah" issue. The Hindu-Muslim issue was the excuse used. ~ India did not annex Kashmir. It had 100% of Kashmir. Pakistan annexed a large portion of it. On these issues, perhaps you need to go more than skin deep. ~ I accept all the greatness of Australia and also all the other democracies. Your friends who have been to India will tell you of the diversity that exists there. It's very different from what you are mentioning. SJ ~ Please... Please do not twist my statement as being against a southerner. I never commented on their appearance. It would be unfortunate if I (and not my comments) become the target of all southerners. ~ I do not accept that 99% of India's people are "less educated". Yet, I cannot comprehend how you may have got this view.I have seen that the Indian crowd at BKK are generally less educated. But I also found that this is more of a business crowd - travelling to buy stuff from BKK and sell in India. They are generally never well-read, as they pick up business from a tender age. Guys... I will be back after I study more on India's caste system - and if I get material to write about. Till then, enjoy screwing up my happiness. Must admit that my bottom's started aching a wee bit.
