Quote: from DaffyDuck on 5:04 pm on Oct. 26, 2005 ...yes, and couple that with an educational level that can't even fathom what they are dealing with, and certainly don't care if the fowl is foul, as long as it gets sold outside of their villages - and what do you get? Essentially, I'm sure the central gov't wants to keep the country (and the economy) healthy, but also reacts in typical fashion by dealing only reactively to the WHO's threats and influence, with absolutely no long-term vision, or care for a global picture. Hard to have that with a sheep herder's background, when it comes to most of their 'leaders'
Well Duck, It looks like those "sheep herders" are taking care of business: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/11/07/bird.flu.china.ap/index.html

You're funny. The notable part of this CNN report is an oft repeated "Beijing says" and "Beijing announces". I particularly enjoyed "China has had no confirmed human infections" which was preceded by "Beijing on Sunday reopened an investigation into whether bird flu killed a 12-year-old girl and sickened two people last month in cases originally ruled not to be H5N1." Ruled not to be H5N1 by Beijing, I might add -- which is now forced to revisit this issue. My point is that Beijing can talk a lot, and will say what will make it appear best -- personally, I am very sceptical of a country the size of China claiming there are no human infections... Though - yes, they do appear to understand that more decisive action needs to be taken - after all, there's lots of money at stake, and their standing in the international community. Let's revisit this article again in a couple of months, and let's see how the sheep herders are doing... I just hope I'll be proven wrong.

In that same vein, from the same day's news, an article listed as "China the petri dish of the world?" First of all, these 'measures', you pointed out, are only in Beijing - but regarding conditions in the rest of China: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/05/03/eyeonchina.virus/ As the article points out "Unhealthy mix of animals, humans", though my favorite and descriptive quotes in that one: "Indeed, there is a saying in South China that "anything with four legs, except a chair, and anything that flies, except an aeroplane, can be eaten." "Animals arrive at these markets stressed, diseased, dying and dead," Animals Asia, a Hong Kong-based charity dedicated to ending cruelty for animals in the region, says on its Web site. "These animals have no free access to food and water or shelter from the elements and are mixed indiscriminately." "It was from just such a market in a village near the provincial capital of Guangzhou that researchers believe the deadly SARS virus originated in 2003, with civet cats high on the list of suspects." Oh, and, my favorite: "South China has long been the epicenter of pandemic flus, giving birth to three or four global outbreaks a century." Beijing's pretty much in the North, isn't it?

According to HK scientists antibiotics will not help mitigate the effects of H5N1: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/11/11/bird.flu.storm.reut/index.html This is interesting as there have been several viral and bacterial infections showing up lately that cause this over reaction of the immune system. BTW Duck: Though this came from cnn.com the article was taken from Reuters. I wonder if there is something in the envrioment promoting this type of mutation....

Personally, I think that a couple of million years of viral evolution have finally yielded a pretty opportunistic variant... I doubt there's any special in the environment encouraging the mutation - unless you consider 'people' as something special in the environment (and of those, there's WAY more there, than anywhere else.) On a more serious note - check out the 'petri dish' article, insofar that *conditions* in China (or, large parts of China) may create a more opportune environment to unfettered and uncontrolled mutations of all kinds of things, including virii (see earlier the SARS spread in China). Personally, I feel many of the conditions in China (or other countries in that region), mirror social and hygiene conditions of 1918 (just wearing modern clothes), including a clear lack of understanding of hygiene and the concept of 'germs' and 'infections'.

I don't know about that. I always thought those chairs and aeroplanes tasted pretty good! Gyaos.

CS, did you actually go to respiratory research to read what is written in that study? I wouldn't be too concerned about it. This is quite interesting though, http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/110805HA.shtml
