But in reality, airlines have not been able to do so until lately, partly because of their own internal preparation problems, like getting budgets and securing supporting facilities, and airport access difficulties

Bullshit

I know for a fact that when airlines requested the plans for their designated areas, contractors tried to 'extort' 1m B out of them for the priviledge of the soft copies...understandably the airlines told them to get f***ed and stalemate was reached until the contractors broke.

Certain airlines are still making plans to reroute their flights to KL between Sept 28th and when the airport opens.

Mandatory IATA insurances are still to my knowledge not in place, so no one could fly in Internationally whether they want to or not.....

Hmnnn...I thought the "short bus ride" that CG referred to was just a figure of speech meaning a "bloody long walk". Though hard to tell with CG as English is not his native language. Enjoy.

There is a shuttle bus ride to a "transportation Center" to get a taxi. That's going to add 30 -45 minutes to the process of getting into downtown BKK. Read it on the new airport's website and weep (click on Transportation)

Suvarnabhumi Airport

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 16 August 2006 :-

Commentary : All set for an in-your-face landing
====================================

By Boonsong Kositchotethana

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's determination to rush Suvarnabhumi Airport's opening on Sept 28, is perilously putting a great risk of severe disruption, if not total paralysis, to Thailand's air transport.

...

What he should do, as has been asked by the industry, is to allow a few more months after Sept 28, for authorities and industry to complete all necessary work and testing to ensure the smooth launch of what the AoT calls ''the pride of Thailand''.
And if he does this, Khun Boonsong will wait a few months before the "new opening date" and write the same thing. Khun Boonsong's article is his opinion based on hearsay. There are so many misrepresentations and assumptions in his article, I don't even know where to start. So I won't.

So, if I book for BKK around that time, I might end up in KL, and getting bused to KL by the airline? That sounds like fun

Oh, this is just panning out beautifully -- the way I see it, either they get certification/insurance at the last minute (unlikely), or the government will provide a 'special' insurance until the IATA does... Either way, it's a beautiful mess. KL and HK must be rubbing their palms together...

Maybe I'll change my plans and head to Singapore instead.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 17 August 2006 :-

THAI to begin move on Sept 1
======================

Thai Airways International (THAI) will move around 1.8 million items of its equipment and facilities from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi airport from Sept 1 onwards. Supreme Commander Gen Ruengroj Mahasaranont said yesterday an equipment relocation centre would start operations on Sept 1 to move THAI facilities from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi.

The task will be concluded in October and afterwards the centre will be dissolved, he said in his capacity as THAI director for relocation of logistical support.

He said the relocation will cover 1.8 million items of light and heavy equipment, including aircraft engines. There will be more than 1,000 trips by vehicles carrying the equipment, ranging from vans to heavy trucks. The very heavy parts will be moved by air with up to 18 flights.

The relocation of light instruments has already begun. THAI will then be ready to operate flights from Suvarnabhumi when the new airport opens on Sept 28.

Gen Ruengroj confirmed that THAI would fly from Suvarnabhumi to Hong Kong and Singapore on Sept 1 and to Phitsanulok, Ubon Ratchathani and Chiang Mai provinces on Sept 15. Those flights, with full service, will serve as a test before the Sept 28 opening.

I wonder if that is outward bound flights only. It would be a bit confusing, I guess, flying from Honkers to Don Muang, and then from the new airport back to HK.

I think people would be wise to opt for the cruise ship route into Thailand instead of the airport.

I was thinking it would be cool if you could take regional flights into Don Muang, say via HK, KL, blah blah blah...

A transfer to BKK would be better than a lousy arrival whatever the new airport's code will be, IMO.

What's the deal with Don Muang? Purely domestic?
