Nightspots threaten nationwide protests

Job losses, closures inevitable, they say

Post reporters

Nightspots are upset about new early closing taking effect on March 1 and are threatening protest action.

Deputy Prime Minister Purachai Piumsombun said he would revoke the licence of any nightspot welcoming underage visitors and helping human trafficking and child prostitution.

From March 1, nightspots outside nightlife zones must close at midnight. Discos and bars inside nightlife zones including Bangkok's three nightlife zones _ Patpong, Ratchadapisek road and Royal City Avenue _ can open until 2am while restaurants where music is performed can open until 1am.

Nightspots with music and alcohol as well as karaoke bars must open from 6pm and close at 1am for those in the zones and at midnight for those outside the zones. Veera Khanthiwit, a shareholder of pubs in the Sad Saeng Duan chain in Bangkok, said the new opening hours may force owners to lay off staff.

Customers usually arrived as late as midnight. The pubs in his chain have 400 staff.

``High rents and low revenue would certainly force lay-offs,'' he said.

Daeng Kessaro, chairman of the Entertainment Establishment Operators' Society in Phuket, said operators of more than 500 nightspots in this southern province would meet on Sunday to prepare protest action, which could spread nationwide.

Most entertainment venues would be badly affected and could be bankrupt as night-goers mostly arrived at nightspots around 11pm which meant they could spend only 1-3 hours there.

Somchai Niewnaen, a coordinator of Entertainment Business Operators' Society on Patong beach, said tourism in Patong would come to an end if nightspots must shut at midnight since tourists usually arrived after midnight. Phusadee na Phatthalung, owner of the Pink Lady Group of entertainment places, said she would have to open earlier.

In Chiang Mai, Charn Pathummin, a member of the association of Thai hotels in the North, said the change of closing times would affect tourism in Chiang Mai.

Almost all entertainment business operators in the North disagreed, and were preparing a proposal urging exemptions for tourist provinces such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya. In Pattaya, members of Beer Bar Operators' Society in Pattaya, led by Samphan Chollaharn, yesterday wrote to Pattaya mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat and Pattaya City Council president Thawit Chaisawangwong demanding a grace period before the changes came into effect.

Mr Samphan said 1,200 beer bars in Pattaya would gather 50,000 signatures to seek a law change.

The good news is the MP's are opening two hours early, therefore I can get a F&S and still make the RT's on time
Not really. Currently some of the open as early as 1 PM. So, they are now opening later, instead of earlier.

Still go, what you will experience is better quality, and a buyers market. When you say to a superbaby a go go ""2000 baht everything can do?"" she aint goin to worry about a wee pain in the rump if its 1145pm... (even now) also the beer bar girls will be there at 4pm instead of 5pm, nothing will change except the things that they will agree to, and just pay less, if thats your inclination. I would tip, but thats me. Many girls will go home, many stay. Hotels want be so f_cking annoying, and joiner fees may in many cases go. Policing of it wont be as strict, and things not as suddenly over at midnight, just winding down, lights on perhasp, and lets make a deal for last 3 songs. The girls will basically have success rate that runs at less then 50% anyhow for go go girls and less bar girls unless hot. Reduced. Getting a girl for a week will cost less, the hangovers not so bad...cheer up...sure it wont be the same, but we will all be f_cking the best girls on offer anyhow, as sure as the sun sets...Our money is too tempting.

Yeah and due to it being a buyers market and an oversupply of gals, all the ugly ones will go home because of no work and bars will be full of stunners only. Then tourism will increase, demand will increase and all of a sudden we will be looking at 10pm closing. Fcuk, see things can only get worse.

TU, I like your positive thinking, but as you can see, my superior future seeing skills see doom and gloom on the horizon. But then again, if that does happen, its only a matter of time before Thanksfornothin is shot and his billions left to his ugly missus and we will get another PM and hopefully that will be Shuwit and then we will get 24 hour pooking.

The new regulations pertaining to entertainment venues in Thailand have provoked the ire of business operators and triggered mass objections. Not content to just mumble and complain, bar owners in Pattaya are taking their case straight to the central government.

Samphan Cholharn, bar owners' committee president (purple shirt) presents their official protest document to Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat.

Pattaya is one of the world's most popular tourists resorts, but its sparkling nightlife and atmosphere of laid-back fun is now under threat of becoming lifeless if the lights are turned off at midnight.

Following the forming of a committee to represent Pattaya bar owners, committee president Samphan Cholharn submitted the protest document to Pattaya City administrators to pass on to the relevant law makers in an attempt to discourage the tightening of regulations.

Bar owners around the country are up in arms over the proposed new legislation that would see the operating times, as well as their income, reduced greatly by only being allowed to open at 6 p.m. and close at midnight. On top of these restrictions they are also opposing the new licensing laws that involve a 50,000 baht initial registration fee followed by an annual 10,000 baht license renewal tariff.

Samphan told reporters that the legislation would definitely damage the smaller businesses and would reduce the number of foreign tourists visiting Pattaya, which is the majority of their customer base. "We want to block this new law so that we can continue to earn a living," said Samphan.

Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat sympathizes with the business owners. "The protest papers outline specific changes to the law as requested by bar owners and apart from a few minor alterations it will be passed on to the relevant committee in the Ministry of Interior for review," the mayor said.

"If the proposed legislation goes ahead it will have a definite impact on tourism numbers. I believe that there are a number of changes required to not only maintain order but allow business owners breathing space. However, in all I think that the laws should not be applicable to major tourist destinations such as Pattaya," concluded the mayor.
