Quote: from Root Rat on 11:09 am on Jan. 30, 2004 The WHO does not at present conclude that any processed poultry products (whole refrigerated or frozen carcasses and products derived from these) and eggs in or arriving from areas currently experiencing outbreaks of avian influenza H5N1 in poultry pose a risk to public health.
So, in other words, grilled chicken is good to go Harry

Yes, it certainly is serious, particularly since it turns out that Heaorge W. Bush is behind the chicken flu conspiracy - he, in facts, started it. Seriously, though, yes, the chicken flu is semi-serious - but it is being blow out of proportion by the media. As was pointed out, 10 people so far have died of it (I suspect more, though, in China, since the Chinese claim not to have anything) ; SARS has 'killed' 800, and the normal influenza virus (the 'normal' flu) kills roughly 10,000 people every year. Tobacco kills 400,000 every year in the US alone, and it goes on. Thus, am I worried about eating chicken in Thailand? No. I might get worried if I walk around BKK, and suddenly a dying chicken falls into my lap, and with it's last dying breath coughs at me "From hell's depth I spit at thee", and croaks... Maybe. Apart from that, debating the 'dangers' of the chicken flu is just mindless regurgitation of media paranoia. Harry
Tobacco does not mutate. Vancouver Jay, You are just a facetious prat !

Nope, you're right - just makes people mindlessly justify using it (and dying of it). Don't see a virus do that. Harry

Probably nothing to worry about but have a look at this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3448857.stm To cut a long story short the flu may have made its first human-human transmission for the first time in vietnam. Still not enough to concern people but I hope south east asia tightens things up on this outbreak soon. and from rockhards website (patong) : PHANG NGA: One person has been hospitalized with suspected bird flu in Phang Nga and tens of thousands of chickens and ducks are set to be slaughtered in the coming days after an outbreak was confirmed on a farm in Takuapa District on January 31st. The Assistant Chief of Phang Nga Provincial Livestock Office (PNPLO) confirmed that chickens on a farm in Takuapa had been found to have died from the virus. So much for the government's bullsh_t attempt to use it's Army to halt the spread of the cock & hen virus. They're MUCH more worried about Thai dancers showing their breasts in bars, and worried that tourists are having a good time in Thailand's notorious nightlife scenes. Talk about misplaced priorities. Meanwhile, the money man, living in a warped fantasy, is parading around Bangkok KFC's assuming that dumb-ass citizens will follow his lead and start eating chickens. How's your brain cell buddy? Lonely?

I bet those 3 pieces he scoffed down were either fish, bashed and moulded to look like chicken, or he stood over the cook and stuck a thermometer up the chickens arse and made sure it was well and truly over 75 degrees and cooked for a long long time.

I no longer think the BBC is impartial, since the goings on last week. Basil Brush (Brush with an R) is not the only person at the Beeb waking around with somebody’s arm up there backside, pulling the strings.

It does at first seem like a lot of hullaballoo for only a handfull of cases. But, the reason that the bug hunters are freaking out is because if it turns out that the H5N1 virus, implicated in avian flu, is able to mutate to where it can be transmitted from person to person, then you'll have quite a problem, probably of a scale that will make SARS look pretty tame by comparison. Of the 10 cases identified in Viet Nam, 8 have died. that's a pretty hefty mortality rate.
