just curious why all of you non-US nationals are so interested in US tax issues ? Why does it bother you so much that the US corporations or individuals are getting or not getting "tax breaks " from our own government?

It's the same old reason - jealousy.

The US is the only country in the world where paying taxes is NOT mandatory, but is labeled as a 'voluntary contribution.' Must piss off those chaps who have no other option than to pay the piper (or at least they think they have no other option)

Daffy,

You do come up with some shit, anyway there are plenty of countries where you don't pay any tax at all.

Wrong

For those of us who work expat in the Middle East.....what is tax! And no, I don't have to pay it back in my home country...unlike US citizens..who I believe have to pay 10% on there foriegn earnings. Well thats what an American friend of mine told me, who had been out here for 10 years, and went home last year when it was introduced.

I, too, worked in the ME for a number of years. Never paid any income tax to the host government. Nobody did, including the local nationals.

If you are a US citizen, you get the first $80,000 of foreign earned income tax free, provided you meet either a bona fide residency or physical presence requirement. All income earned above that amount is taxable.

The Brits get to exclude all income earned off-shore provided they are out of the UK for 11 of the 12 months. Right, out there, guys?

I understand the Aussies have a similar arrangement but you down-under types can better tell us.

Daffy, what is your source that says the payment of tax to the IRS is a "voluntary contribution"?

I know lots of folks that would like to see that part of the tax code.

I may be wrong but I read in some tax books that an US citizen must pay taxes on all oversees income if the income was not taxed in the country where the income was originated. When then I am paying taxes on my interests on oversees non-us-dollar holding accounts?

How about Thai sex workers? I don't think they pay any taxes. But in the US, a stripper has to pay some taxes though she may be cheating on her total income.

Most of the early Boeing jets had British Rolls Royce engines as the only power plant, and the Rolls Royce engines remain an option on all Boeing jets today.

Sorry, I know this an old post, but I was re-reading it and can't let it go by.
Early Boeing Jets did NOT have Rolls engines. They were Pratt & Whitney.
But, yes, they are an "option" today. In fact Rolls has a plant in Mississippi.
The Wikipedia is NOT accurate. It can be edited by anyone and, therefore, contains inaccurate if not totally erroneous information on some subjects.

Yes that is correct. The the 707-420 was powered by RollsRoyce Conways. Boeing has used a variety of power plants on its planes. On modern jets, teh customer can choose between 2 or 3 of the major jet engine makers when ordering a plane (Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney, or GE).

Edit in, 14 July: My mistake, there was a version of the 707-320 that used RR engines and was designated the
707-420. It was the only version of the 707 that did not use P&W engines.
The 367-80 prototype was the basis for the military KC-135 Tanker (inflight refueler). While the military gave Boeing permission to build commerical jets based on the prototype, the U.S. Government (military) did Not fund the project. Boeing spent $16 Million of their Own money, a very large sum of money 50 years ago, to build the Dash 80.
