So I had this new Bus Op on the way into work. It seems like all the dead died from chest wounds. If people would wear light weight flap jackets that would cut the risk down considerably. I am thinking that the projectiles coming from these types of bombs do not have enough velocity to penetrate the skull unless you are actually sitting on the trash can, but then you would just have your ass blown off. Now if you could get them in yellow you could make a fortune.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 3 January 2007 :- PM: No progress on bombing probe ========================== Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said after the cabinet meeting that authorities still had no suspects in connection with the deadly bomb blasts that took place on New Year's Eve in Bangkok. "The investigation has not progressed at all," said Gen Surayud. "As of now, there's no evidence to bring the perpetrators for prosecution." Gen Surayud said he would discuss this with officials including the National Police Office and the Internal Security Operation Command. Gen Surayud said the cabinet agreed to speed up investigation process to find perpetrators behind the series of bombings. It also agreed to set up security measures on the National Youth Day which is on Jan 13. Gen Surayud said the cabinet has assigned related parties to draft security measures at public and government venues to prevent further attacks. These parties would have to get back to the government on Friday to present the safety measures they come up with. Meanwhile, Information and Communication Technology Minister Sitthichai Pokai-udom said it is unlikely that the bombs on New Year's Eve were triggered by mobile phones. Still, Mr Sitthichai said that ICT has all of the information of the cell phone usage starting from the night of New Year's Eve until now and is ready to give it to CNS for investigation if it requires. However, Mr Sitthichai said it was difficult to track cell phone usage during New Year because there were millions of people using mobile phones every minute.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 3 January 2007 :- Police rule out 'IRK' graffiti tie-in ========================= Police have dropped the link between the ''IRK'' graffiti sign seen at several blast sites with those behind the bombings in central Bangkok and Nonthaburi on Sunday night. A police source said yesterday that the sprayed characters had been spotted on the walls of many communities in Bangkok before the explosions, and they believed the graffiti was the work of teenage gangs attempting to scare the public. Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief Pol Maj-Gen Krisada Pankong-chuen said any youths found spraying the letters would be charged with provoking public panic. The mysterious symbol was found on public phone booths at the Victory Monument, Pratunam and Gaysorn Plaza after the explosions. Yesterday, a bomb squad rushed to Central Plaza Lat Phrao after bus inspector Pichet Komut reported the IRK characters sprayed on many phone booths in front of the shopping complex. The search found nothing suspicious and the area was later opened for traffic and public use, but police and soldiers were maintained to secure the complex. The source said police had got hold of eyewitnesses and security camera footage of some blast sites in an attempt to nail the bombers. The source revealed that police already had eyewitness accounts of the suspects at the Victory Monument, the first blast site where two people were killed. The witness yesterday examined film of traffic police closed-circuit TV at the roundabout to identify the suspects. The results were not available, the source said.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 3 January 2007 :- Police have 2 theories on bombs ========================= Police investigating the New Year's Eve bombings are working on the theory that attacks could have been ordered by either "those in old power" or "those currently in power with conflicts of interests among themselves", said a source in Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB). "So far, no evidence whatsoever can be produced against the wrongdoers, whoever they are. The Council for National Security (CNS) seems to know best who they could be," said a source who asked not to be named. The MPB are jointly investigating the bombs with the Crime Suppression Division. High-profile investigators from both police units and a number of bomb disposal teams made up a taskforce after yesterday's two-hour meeting. Police are compiling file images from surveillance cameras installed near all eight bomb sites to scan for pictures indicating possible wrongdoers or other useful information. A number of uniformed officers at local police stations are interviewing witnesses who were near the scenes in the past 24 hours to gather more information.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 4 January 2007 :- Minister: 'People in uniform' suspected ============================= Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas denied speculation that the Council for National Security or the government might be behind the New Year's Eve bombing, but said rogue military officers could be involved. "When foreign media said it was the work of insiders, they did not mean people inside CNS," said Gen Boonrawd. "It might be people in uniform." Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh claimed on Wednesday that some foreign media reported the CNS and the government were behind the twin waves of bombing, which killed three and wounded 38, including six foreigners. Gen Chavalit also emotionally denied any personal involvement in the blasts, saying the government and CNS jumped to a conlusion to blame him in the incident. Gen Boonrawd said Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and CNS chairman Sonthi Boonyaratkalin had never mentioned Gen Chavalit's name in connection with the bombings. Gen Boonrawd denied rumours that there would be a counter-coup, saying that they were created by some groups with a political agenda.

Quote: from don5252 on 6:24 am on Jan. 3, 2007 can't help but wonder why nana & s.c. were spared, seems not to fit a muslim m.o., you know, kill innocent people having a good time
Because the world at large doesn't really care about whoremongers and prostitutes being killed and that is, unfortunately, how it would be viewed. Now blowing up Khao San Road, or one of the islands, and killing a lot of middle class kids on a gap year from university, or 'decent', 'upstanding' tourists is different. That is how they would cause maximum fear and damage tourism, not blowing up some fat, bald sex pests.

hey Finchy, will try to word this carefully, don't want to motivate people who like to kill or bring the wrath of mr alan out, but I can't agree a cheap ass penny pinching backpacker on Khao San Rd. has more economic impact on LOS then we do, upper class innocent young people are more newsworthy but to take N.P. & S.C. off the map and the money we bring in, well, lets just say it wouldn't be good, also I am concerned and disappointed Thai officials have come up with nothing
