Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 3 November 2009 :- Thailand second best-value destination ============================== Thailand is the world's second best-value destination according to Lonely Planet's 'Best in Travel 2010' guide. Iceland tops the best-value list. The renowned travel guide firm said Thailand remained "perennially good value". Thailand was one of the least expensive long-haul holidays for European tourists and there were many accommodation choices in the country. The world's best-value destination for next year went to Iceland. Lonely Planet said exploring ice caps and volcanoes and bathing in hot springs in Iceland would be significantly less expensive, thanks to the global economic downturn. London, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Bulgaria, Kenya and Las Vegas are other destinations in the most affordable list.

Some Thai hotel properties also staked a claim on the prestigious list of World Travel Awards winners. According to the Readers’ Choice Awards, elected by 25,916 readers, Thailand scores top honours in several categories this year. In “Top Islands Asia”, Phuket is ranked third and Samui is eighth. Altogether five properties in Thailand rank among the Top 20 Resorts in Asia. A lot of idiots will keep talking about Thailand dropping in value, and pointing to Vietnam, or Laos, or Cambodia as better 'values'. Sure, if you just take the price of pussy as the only 'value' to compare, maybe they are right for themselves. Personally, Thailand has a lot more to offer to tourists and families than the other destinations - as such, comprehensively, I feel that Thailand offers the best overall value to travelers.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 18 November 2010 :- 15m foreign tourists expected this year ( 2010 ) ============================= About 15.5 million foreign tourists will probably visit Thailand this year, according to Kasikorn Research Centre. The leading think tank forecasts that the number of foreign tourist arrivals for 2010 will increase by 10 per cent over last year. This would pump about 536 billion baht into the economy. The foreign tourist arrivals in 2011 should rise by another five per cent over this year if there is no new violence, generating about 555 billion baht in revenue next year, the centre predicts. "Tourism growth cannot be achieved without cooperation from all sides. "With a stable political situation, peace will be achieved and there would be no disunity in the country. This would make foreign tourists more confident of their safety while in the country," the KRC said.

Just how accurate is Kasikorn`s estimate of 15.5 million tourists likely to be? Is Kasikorn in anyway connected with the Thai government,or is it an independent body with a track record of making accurate estimates of tourist numbers? 15.5 million I think would be a record high for tourists to Thailand. In the light of recent Red Shirt violence, bombings in Bangkok, and the high value of the baht against European and USA currencies one would have to be sceptical that such an optimistic estimate will be achieved.

They likely count any foreign person entering Thailand as a tourist. BUT since they promoted Thailand and Swampy as a "hub", many people merely pass throught Thailand. For example, next trip, I m going to arrive in Thailand then depart to Nepal, then come back and then go to Burma for a few days before to come back Thailand and then go home. So all alone I will be "3 more tourists" to add to their bogus count... Same for the people who just transit via swampy... Same for all the visa runs...a single guy become at least "4 tourists" in a year. Maybe even same story for the cambodian/laotian that enter Thailand just for a few hours to go to the border markets... Counting like this you end up with a LOT of tourists in number, but not in the country... Madfrog

I go to Kathmandu for work on a regular basis, and I do agree that Nepal and Nepalese people are indeed really really nice. Also its funny to note that despite this country being much more poor than Thailand one will never see there all the scams that are to be found in Thailand, and no flock of prostitutes everywhere either... People in Nepal are still friendly, honnest and hardworking despite the heavy tourism industry in their country. Now about Buthan I dont know what to think, what I heard from more than a few Buthanese in Nepal is that they are tired to be made to live like in a living museum... with foreigners allowed to come and see them only in limited number, and for a limited time, and them forced to play a script : forced to dress with traditionnal costume, as its illegal for them to wear anything else, lots of restrictions on what can and cant be imported, a Buthanese simply cant smoke tobacco as only tourists can import tobacco and strictly for their personnal use.

Tourism driven prognosticators constantly predict high numbers - they did so the past couple of years, essentially pulling wishful numbers out of their asses.... Then, when actual numbers were far off from their rosy predictions, they either constantly revised them, or just stayed very quiet. Thailand should be lucky to get 5-8 million tourists this year.
