Morale of the story.... don't mess with these guys - out of nowhere you may encounter trouble.

Scary stuff indeed. However, let me propose a couple other morals you might want to learn from your story:

1) Learn to speak Thai...and until you do so well enough, don't try to express thoughts/opinions/feelings beyond your current ability to do so in Thai, especially to Thai males.

2) When you're speaking English to Thai males whose English is less than perfect (um, that's like 99.9% of all Thai males, especially working class), NEVER use the word "f***" or any variation thereof.

Why? Thais perceive the word "f***" as largely an insult and incitement to violence (the exception being bar girls, who in addition to the above perceive it as a description of something you want to do to them!)

Think of it like what Rover the dog hears when his master says "Okay Rover, now roll over...c'mon Rover, roll over! And then speak! Then sit!"

Rover hears: blahblahblah Rover blahblahblah Rover blahblah...you get the idea. The Thai hears the angry fightin' word "f***" without understanding any of the subtlety of how you may be using it as a native English speaker ("fan-f***ing-tastic!" or "it's a f***ing shame what's happened to tourism under the Red Shirts, etc.)

3) Don't talk politics to tax drivers in Thailand! EVER!!

Vox - I know, good advice, thank you. I suppose like most, I am getting pissed off with all this, and the guy looked ok on first impressions, in his 40's and of good appearance. I have learnt a lot from this experience and will act accordingly in future, if indeed I still feel the need to have a future in this place...

I guess I don't understand how the protests hurt punters. Although some of the bars maybe closed, there are still many eager and hungry TG's looking for business, and willing to negotiate. One may even be able to get cheaper hotel rooms airfares. All you have to do is use some common sense and stay away from protest areas, as others have already suggested.

If I had the opportunity (can't at the moment), I think right now is the perfect time to go to LOS.

scary stuff. thank goodness no one on the BTF injured.
yeah I think we just need to only talk to HOT girls in red shirts

i am set to land in LOS soon, and I kind of agree it could be a feast time for us. but my only concern is a takeover of the airport and flight interruption. anyone have a feeling of how likely this might be. has anything improved security wise since that last happened. thx for any insight.

Living near Udorn as I presently do, I thought all the metered BKK taxis were up here!

You see lots of them around now for the holidays.

If the numbers grow, getting to Nana and Soi Cowboy, or anywhere along Sukhumvit for that matter.

Natthawut says more red shirts will join rally after Songkran holidays

Natthawut Saikua, a red-shirt leader, said more protesters from provinces will join the demonstration at the Rajprasong Intersection after the long Songkran holidays.

He said the arrival of more protesters would require the protesters to occupy roads up to in front of the National Stadium beyond the Phathumwan Intersection or until Soi Sukhumvit 31 or Silom Road.

He said the rally will go on until the government dissolves the House.

They will not stop the rally even the prime minister resigns.

When I was young I lived in Japan. This was the mid-late 1960s when everyone was up in arms over the rice prices, the presence of American troops on Japanese soil, etc. etc. etc.

Well the place I lived had a signboard that warned you where the current protests were and what areas to avoid. Once my brother and I were going to downtown Tokyo to visit our dentist and although we saw that a demonstration was scheduled we figured it was no big deal and we headed off. Needless to say we nearly walked into one of those demonstrations.

To make a long story short we managed to flag a cab and after explaining our predicament the driver grunted 'Ha Demos' and drove us like a bat outta hell to the Sanno Hotel (which was run by the US Army and had security).

As we left the cab the driver told us in broken English "Next tim no go to Demo, Hai."

Words to the wise, if you know the Red Shirts (or the Yellow Shirts for that matter) are gathering somewhere do not plan to be there. There are plenty of other places in BKK to enjoy...

Dunno about you but my money is on the Reds in a fair fight. The Reds are accustomed to regular hard manual labor whilst the most hard worrk that the prissys in the Yellows have done is to walk down a flight of stairs when the lifts are full

Regular Hard Labour - you mean the women then.

Cheers.

Well, the Reds need to worry about being poked with the parasols I see the Yellows holding to shield their delicate skin when they are out for their counter demonstrations.

since I live in Siam Sq., I can't avoid the Red mob. Seeing them all camped out on the sidewalk, living on mats, (it's interesting to see how quickly they got the expansion set up yesterday--this isnt a nickle and dime operation--- ) it's clear the Yellows would get their asses kicked head to head.

unless the Yellows took some Reds out by throwing their laptops at them.

Unlike on the Thai soaps, a stern look or snide comment from a Yellow isn't going to make these Reds cower off.
