Well, contrary to most who seem to be eager anticipating a total fiasco, I do hope that the opening of the new airport is a total success. Of course, I will not be surprised if there are hiccups -most certainly there will be- but I will happier if things go better than anticipated rather than the opposite -as some perpetual prophets of doom seem to want.

sycophant (n.) : A poorly elephant. Similar to sick-buffalo but bigger and requiring more expensive treament. Good luck to all those intrepid travellers who will be trying out the new airport and finding their way around the transportation monopolies. Let's have some details posted ASAP, especially if there is a departures work-around like DM. How will they be able to stop 6-year-old taxis from bringing folks TO the airport? Will you have to make sure you are picked up from your hotel by a new taxi? How do you tell the age of a taxi? What is the difference between a taxi that is 4 years and 364 days old and one that is 4 years and 366 days old? Do they change color like Logan's Run? IMWTK!

The first couple of days the airport is fully open will be very hectic. Who belongs where and what is where and every problem associated with the opening of a new mega airport will rear it's ugly head. Things we take for grantic, where to park the fuel trucks, fuel delivery, baggage routes, food handling, you name it, it will have it's growning pains. The first week will show marked improvments and after that it should smooth out. I for one will send a "nasty" gram to the Thai Embassey here in the states and inform them of my displeasure with the Taxi situation. Believe me if enough people email enough Thai Embasseys things will change. Also believe me if we don't do anything about the taxis being so far away we will get our ole muddies reamed. Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 28 August 2006 :- CTX too slow, new machines will be bought ================================ The controversial CTX bomb detectors at Suvarnabhumi have proved to be too slow in screening luggage for transit and no-frills passengers. Some foreign airlines are also unable to complete construction and installation of facilities at the new airport in time for the official opening next month. Airport director Somchai Sawasdeepon said an additional baggage X-ray and conveyor system, similar to the one at Don Muang, would have to be purchased and installed by Sept 28. Using the CTX system, airport staff need at least 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete a flight luggage check. This was too slow for transit and low-cost passengers. The airport first thought of moving the X-ray machines used at Don Muang international airport to Suvarnabhumi, Mr Somchai said. However, the reinstallation would take some time and might not be completed by the opening date. "So Airports of Thailand Plc has agreed to acquire a new system," he said. The CTX machines would remain the main bomb detection system. The government spent more than four billion baht acquiring the 26 CTX machines from the United States, hoping the high- tech system would keep the airport and travellers safe from terrorist attacks. The deal drew allegations the machines were overpriced and some politicians might have pocketed kickbacks from suppliers. Mr Somchai said some foreign airlines were behind schedule in setting up their offices because of delays in the granting of construction funds by their head offices. They would be allowed to use facilities owned by Thai Airways International, or those at Don Muang airport, until their new facilities were completed, he said.

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 29 August 2006 :- Thailand airport fees to go up ======================= Air passengers will be asked to pay heavier departure taxes from early next year, Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) said yesterday. The international departure tax would be increased by Bt200 to Bt700 and domestic passengers would incur a Bt100 fee, up from a current Bt50. The increase would be effective from February 1. AOT operates Suvarnabhumi Airport. It had planned to introduce the new taxes upon the opening of the new airport on September 28. Meanwhile, new landing fees levied on aircraft using the airport would be imposed from April 1, 2007. That is a six-month delay from the original schedule. AOT said it was postponing the new fee to attract airlines to Suvarnabhumi. The new landing fee is a 15-per-cent increase on that charged at Don Muang airport. AOT explained earlier that fees at Suvarnabhumi Airport needed to be raised due to the greater amenities and facilities that would be provided. After 40 years in the making Suvarnabhumi has cost Bt150 billion. It is scheduled to start operations on September 28.

Shamas I think this is desperately optimistic. When HK opened the new airport, it took about a month before they had smoothed out most of the problems, and even after that there were a few hiccups. the first two weeks had many problems - computer failures, flight display systems not working, etc. The chances of Thailand doing a better job than HK? Well... we'll see, but in my view it will be a nightmare for at least a month, before things pick up....

I can't help thinking that although the new airport might well open at 3 am on 28th September, Don Muang will not close for commercial flights at the same time. Maybe some flights to the old, some to the new, some staff to the old, some to the new, some bags to the old etc etc. I arrive on the 30th, mai pen rai

- Wrong. There will be normal taxis. Expensive limousines will be the privilege of those who can afford them. If you cannot get a taxi and cannot affford a limo, you can always walk (good for saving money and good cardiovascular exercise). - 40%. Yes. Sounds like a lot percentage wise. But it is about US$ 5. If this greatly affects your travelling budget, better stay home and go to the local shopping mall. - Probably? Yes, probably yes; probably not. I guess we will have to wait for some statistical post-fact study (post-fact so that we do not speculate about what is probable and what not). - Increase on the plane tickets too... Is that a question? Or a statement? Again, if price increase is too much for you, maybe time to start a letter writing campaign. Good luck.
