Report from The Nation dated 16 February 2012 : Bomb plot deepens ============ Iran and Israel dropped diplomatic bombshells on each other yesterday, accusing one another of being behind Tuesday's bomb blasts in Bangkok. Israel was quick to implicate Iran in the bomb incidents. "The attempted attack in Bangkok proves once again that Iran and its proxies are continuing to act in the ways of terror and the latest attacks are an example of that," Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said. But Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast denied his country was involved in any of the cases and said Tehran condemned any "terrorist action". He told the official IRNA news agency: "The aim of the Zionist regime's claims is to overshadow the assassination of Iranian scientists." The Iranian spokesman also accused Israel of "trying to harm the friendly and historic relations between Iran and Thailand". Also yesterday, the United States - a close ally of Israel - condemned the blasts in Thailand's capital and suggested they may be linked to Iran. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the US was awaiting the results of investigations. She offered condolences to those injured. 'Iranian-sponsored links' -------------------------- Nuland did not blame Irandirectly. But she noted Monday's incidents in India and Georgia, and recent "Iranian-sponsored" and "Hezbollah-linked" plots to attack Israeli and Western interests in Azerbaijan and Thailand. She called it "reprehensible" for states to use terrorism as a foreign policy tool. Thai authorities are holding two Iranians in connection with the three explosions in Bangkok on Tuesday. One of the men, named as 28-year-old Saeid Morati according to a passport found in his possession, lost both his legs when he tried to hurl an explosive device at police while fleeing an earlier blast at a house in the Sukhumvit area. The other Iranian was detained as he tried to board a flight out of Thailand. A third suspect who fled to Malaysia was arrested at Thailand's request. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul yesterday said Thai authorities have not described Tuesday's incident as an act of terrorism. But he urged terrorist groups not to include Thailand in their plots. "At the moment, there is no evidence linking this incident to terrorism. So far the arrested [men] are accused of illegal use of explosives and of attempting to kill others and officials on duty," Surapong said. "Personally, I believe the incidents in Georgia, India, and Thailand have no connection." He added, however, that: "I would like to ask people who think of plots harmful to Thailand to stop them. And I ask terrorists not to use Thailand as their base." The foreign minister called his press conference yesterday after 10 foreign countries issued travel ad-visories for their citizens following the blasts. They are the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Norway, and Ireland. Surapong meets US ambassador ----------------------------------- Surapong said the US ambassador to Thailand, Kristie Kenney, had called him on Tuesday evening to ask for details about the blasts. The US Embassy later issued a warning advising American citizens to be careful when travelling in Thailand. "I thank Ambassador Kenney for calling first. That allowed me an opportunity to explain the situation and the actions by the Thai authorities aimed at restoring foreigners' confidence," he said. The foreign minister had earlier expressed his disappointment over a warning last month by the US Embassy about possible terrorist attacks in Bangkok

Report from Bangkok Post dated 16 February 2012 : City governor urges public to avoid panic - Shopping centres beef up security after blasts ============================== Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday urged the public to stay calm following Tuesday's bombings, saying everything is being done ensure people's safety. He said the BMA will do everything possible to support the police and the government in preventing a recurrence of the incident in which three blasts injured five people, including an Iranian attacker, in Sukhumvit Soi 71. He said law enforcement agencies as well as the Bangkok fire and rescue department have been told to stay vigilant and be ready to deliver emergency responses if need be. MR Sukhumbhand said the city is also speeding up the installation of another 10,000 security cameras, especially in areas frequented by foreign visitors, and all should be up and running within the year. There are currently 15,000 cameras across Bangkok although more are needed, said deputy city police chief Phisit Phisutsak, after meeting city council chairman Suthichai Weerakulsunthorn yesterday. Major shopping malls in Bangkok have also stepped up security. Robinson Department Store has increased security guards at its outlets, Robinson vice-president for marketing Sirinij Chokchairittikul said. Central city shopping malls are particularly popular with foreign tourists. The Mall Group, which runs the Paragon shopping centre near Siam Square and Emporium on Sukhumvit Road, said it has more than 200 additional security guards in place, many in plain clothes, at all its department stores. The stores will also work with the police dog unit to conduct around-the-clock inspections and sweeps, the Mall Group's senior executive vice-president Phaibul Kanokvatanawan said. The bomb blasts have prompted foreign embassies to issue safety warnings. The British embassy on its website has urged its nationals to "exercise caution" in several provinces including Chiang Rai and Ubon Ratchathani. In response to the warning, security agencies in Chiang Rai have been put on alert and ordered to remain vigilant, while providing daily reports to the newly established anti-international terrorism centre based in the province, Chiang Rai governor Thanin Suphasaen said. Soldiers are also closely monitoring checkpoints on the borders with Myanmar and Laos. In Ubon Ratchathani, which shares a border with Laos, authorities have also been told to stay alert and improve security measures in crowded places, including bus and railway stations and the airport, its governor Suraphon Saiphan said. Security is also being tightened in Phuket and Songkhla's commercial hub in Hat Yai. Police in Phuket are maintaining a strong presence on Patong beach while checkpoints have been set up to inspect vehicles heading into Hat Yai.

Report from The Nation dated 16 February 2012 : Thailand not terrorist target: experts ======================== Thailand is not a target for international terrorism but a transit point where terrorists use as a sanctuary for planning their operations, a political science lecturer said on Thursday. Panitan Wattanayagorn of Chulalongkorn University was commenting on the Tuesday's blasts in Bangkok involving three Iranian suspects. "The country is an open tourist destination and certain foreign visitors might come for a stagning ground to plan and stockpile arms," he said. Police are investigating all leads in connection with the three suspects. There was a loud explosion at their rental home off Sukhumvit 71. Three three fled the scene. One suspect threw two explosive devices at a taxi and a police patrol car, ending up injuring and losing both legs. Another was trying to flee to Malaysia before being apprehended at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The third suspect is believed to have fled to Kuala Lumpur, pending verification. Forensic investigators found five explosive devices at the rental home. They have yet to draw conclusion about the first explosion gone off at the rental house. PM adviser Panlop Pinmanee said the explosions were not terror attacks but indicated the stockpiling of explosives. "What happened is not a lapse of law enforcement nor poor intelligence although the authorities might need to step up security measures," he said.

... attacking enemies while they are in incompetently policed nations, like Thailand, seems more effective than attacking them as hardened targets in their home country... this might be the next evolution in the Arab-Israeli Conflict. ... if so, Thailand might be selected as a battlefield... NOT terrorism, mind you. ... fortunately for us though, in a display of diplomatic brilliance, Foreign Minister Surapong asked the bad men nicely not to make trouble here: "I would like to ask people who think of plots harmful to Thailand to stop them. And I ask terrorists not to use Thailand as their base." ... for those readers who are only casual Thailand observers, before Thaksin appointed him as Thailand's Foreign Minister, Surapong had exectly zero experience in foreign diplomacy... totally untrained...such a nice man, though... I'm sure the terrorists will delight in having tea with him in the Dusit Tea Room... (after which they blow it up).

Bali was not a target before the blast went off there either. At least the foreign minister had enough sense not to chastise all the countries for declaring warnings yet, but I'm sure he will in the next few days.

Thailand is one of the biggest money laundering centres in the world. It is used by criminal gangs and terrorists alike from all over the world. Why on earth would terrorists want to draw attention to nationals from their countries in Thailand?? More likely is that the explosion in the house was from a meth lab (a business in which Iranians are heavily involved) and the grenades were there for the gangs protection. The fact that that there was an explosion in the first place and that the guy subsequently blew his own legs off does not really give me the impression that they were a highly trained terrorist cell.

Have to agree with Bro BAskoy, those guy acted more like the stupid wanabee terorists in the "we are four lions" movie than like the real deal... Managing to throw a grenade into a tree so that it come back right at your feet is NOT the act of someone who is used to manipulate explosives...
