Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 28 November 2010 :-

Survey: Corruption more common in Thailand
=============================

A business survey revealed that many respondents believed corruption was more prevalent in Thailand but expected the country's economy to grow three to four per cent next year.

The survey was conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, involving 420 business operators nationwide.

62.4 per cent of the polled said they believed corruption was more prevalent in the country than in the past three years.

79.7 per cent said they had paid bribes government officials and politicians in return for concessions and the amount of each bribe was usually more than 25 per cent of the concession.

Most respondents said corruption was the main obstacle for the country's sustainable development and it should be addressed seriously.

However, most business operators expected the Thai economy in 2011 to grow 3.1 to 4.0 per cent year-on-year.

They believed next year's risk factors would be political uncertainty, economic volatility and fluctuating oil prices.

Tourism boost seen in panning for gold
========================

LAMPANG: Local authorities see a golden tourism opportunity in the Wang River and are organising Thailand's first gold panning festival to tie in with the traditional seasonal activity in April.

Wang Nua district chief Songsak Ditsathan said residents have panned for gold in the Wang River during the dry season for generations.

It generates extra income for them after the rice farming season ends.

District and local administrative organisations have agreed to hold the gold panning festival during Songkran.

Mr Songsak expects the event to attract tourists to Wang Nua, the northernmost district of Lampang, and to generate enough income for residents so that they will not have to work in other areas during the dry season.

Each household earns an average of 9,000 baht from gold panning in the dry season.

Mr Songsak said the district did not have enough gold deposits to support large mining operations.

Resident Somsri Chantama said she had panned for gold deposits since her childhood.

Many farming families pan for gold when the river's water level recedes. Gold nuggets or gold dust can be found in layers of soil deposited by the river. Gold panning could be done for only a few months of the year, she said.

"I have panned for gold for 14 days so far this month and sold it to a shop for 9,000 baht," said Mrs Somsri.

Most residents welcome the gold panning festival plans.

Somboon Kositanon, director of Lampang's Mineral Resources Office Region 1, said gold deposits have been found in three districts in Lampang - Thoen, Mae Phrik and Wang Nua.

Gold deposits can be found at more than 40 sites in the six northern provinces of Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phrae, Phichit, Phetchabun and Sukhothai.

Mr Somboon said gold panning in Wang Nua is allowed as long as residents stay in public areas. But those caught encroaching on forest areas to dig for gold would be punished.

Report from The Nation dated 30 June 2011 :-

Bangkok ranks 3rd in global top 20 destination cities
===================================

Bangkok is on the list of global top 20 destination cities in terms of visitor arrivals and spending, according to MasterCard Worldwide survey.

Yet, reflected through the growth rate in 2011 against 2010, the ranking is likely to slip soon.

In the visitor arrivals category, European cities dominate with 10 out of the 20, and with London and Paris in first and second position, respectively, attracting 20.1 million and 18.1 million, respectively.

Cities in Asia/Pacific come second, accounting for eight of the top 20. Bangkok occupies the third position with the number of 11.5 million visitors, testifying to its attraction as a popular tourist destination. Dubai, in the Middle East, is ranked ninth. Only one city in North America is in the top 20, New York, which is ranked twelfth.

The survey covered 132 destination cities.

Global top 20 destination cities by international visitors (2011)

1. London 20.1m

2. Paris 18.1m

3. Bangkok 11.5m

4. Singapore 11.4m

5. Hong Kong 10.9m

6. Madrid 10.1m

7. Istanbul 9.4m

8. Frankfurt 8.4m

9. Dubai 7.9m

10. Rome 7.9m

11. Seoul 7.9m

12. New York 7.6m

13. Amsterdam 7.4m

14. Kuala Lumpur 6.9m

15. Milan 6.7m

16. Barcelona 6.7m

17. Vienna 6.2m

18. Shanghai 5.5m

19. Taipei 5.4m

20. Tokyo 5.0m

Bangkok's ranking seems at risk, though. Based on the annualised growth rate, Barcelona is outstanding with the 24.3 per cent rate, followed by Malaysia (21.8 per cent). Bangkok is not on the top 10 list with the highest growth rates.

Destination Cities Growth Rate

Barcelona 24.3%

Kuala Lumpur 21.8%

Istanbul 20.4%

Shanghai 18.6%

Hong Kong 17.4%

Dubai 17.3%

Taipei 16.9%

Singapore 14.5%

Tokyo 13.5%

New York 11.7%

"Instead, from the perspective of growth, six of the top 10 are in Asia, one in the Middle East and one in North America. This kind of growth pattern strongly suggests that destination cities in emerging markets in Asia will continue to grow in importance," MasterCard said.

In the spending category, Bangkok ranked the fourth, with the spending of US$14.4 billion compared to $25.6 billion in London, $20.3 million in New York and $14.6 million in Paris. Compared to 2010, Bangkok's visitor spending showed a growth rate of 18.6 per cent.

Global Top 20 destination cities by international visitor spending (2011)

1. London $25.6bn

2. New York $20.3bn

3. Paris $14.6bn

4. Bangkok $14.4bn

5. Frankfurt $14.0bn

6. Sydney $13.8bn

7. Los Angeles $12.5bn

Bangkok named 'World's Best City'

Thailand's capital Bangkok has been named the world's best city by influential US travel magazine Travel + Leisure.

Announced as part of its World's Best 2011 Awards issue to be published July 22, the prestigious title was awarded based on the votes of thousands of Travel + Leisure readers who voted for cities around the world.

It is the second year in a row that Bangkok has been named in the top spot, despite a period of civil unrest last year which did considerable damage to Thailand's international reputation as a tourism haven.

The only other Asian city to make an appearance in the top ten was Siem Reap, a major tourist attraction for many on the backpacking trail around South East Asia thanks to its proximity to the famous Angkor Wat temple.

Europe was the major winner in the list of best cities, with five of the top ten, while Africa, America and Australia each gained one place (full list below).

Among a ranking of the world's best islands also in the issue, Santorini in Greece managed to secure first place, moving up considerably from the sixth-place spot it held in last year's rankings.

The paradise island of Bali in Indonesia managed second-place position, but the real shock was the fall of the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, which dropped from top spot to tenth place in the rankings.

2011 tourism revenue a record high
==========================

The tourism business boomed in 2011, with overall revenue up 23.92 per cent over 2010 to 734.59 billion baht, a historic high, despite the flood crisis, Supol Sriphan, director general of the Tourism Department at the Tourism and Sports Ministry, said on Thursday.

He said 19.09 million tourists came to Thailand in 2011, up 19.8 per cent on the previous year,.

The largest number of foreign tourists were from Malaysia, at 2.47 million, followed by China (1.76 million), Japan (1.12 million), Russia (1,014,493), South Korea (1,014,292), India (916,787), Laos (887,677), Australia, (854,064), Great Britain (844,221) and the United States (684,073).

Tourists from these countries accounted for 66.60 per cent of total foreign tourists visiting the country in 2011, up from 57.86 per cent reported in the previous year, he said.

Mr Supol said the number of tourists from other Asian nations is expected to further increase in line with the continuing economic expansion in China, India and South Korea.

The director general projected that the number of foreign tourists to Thailand in 2012 would increase by eight to ten per cent, to between 20.5 million and 20.9 million.

Damn, I never saw the gold panning competitions advertised before. I wonder if they have them this year? Although I'll be in the far South for Songkran. I've seen them panning all up, and down the Mekong, and have pictures.

I would be highly interested in the competition though, as in 1998 I was rated number 9 in the world finals in Colma, and number 6 in California in competitive speed panning from 1997-2002.
