I read this too in the Bangkok Post today and since almost everything in the local mainstream media is so transparently biased and I've recently gotten so disgusted with it, I just open up the stuff for a laugh, I immediately thought, "Ah, this must be what we call "poetic license". Take one of the typical struggling working class persons and put all your philosophies right in her mouth. Talk about a demeaning CIF, Jeez..." But since, bkkz, you've posted it here, I've decided to reread it. Thanks, because I found things I liked after all. Especially this: Me: But sister, free or not, it's the same education we have been getting since forever. How would that change anything? Her: I don't know. Do you? Does anyone?

Quote: from quack quack on 11:37 am on April 19, 2010 That is why democracy is definitely NOT a suitable form of government for most of the world, other than North America & Western Europe.
Not even the USA & Western Europe. There are many idiots there (thus idiots end up deciding). Democracy only works in places where MOST of the population have the SAME DECENT level of education; think Scandinavian countries, Finland, and Switzerland (barely).

I don't understand how you measure success? You mean like when Mao ordered an increase in iron production from foundries, and all the farmers recycled their tools to help the effort, and then 5 million starved to death because food production dramatically decreased? You mean like when "as many as 3 million people died in the violence of the Cultural Revolution" and millions more were permanently injured, raped, tortured, and had their property taken away (see "Mao: The Unknown Story," by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday) ? You mean like when hundreds of peaceful pro-democracy protesters where killed in Tienanmen Square? What exactly do you mean by "successful"? Compare China with the economy of Taiwan where democracy works quite well, and the people are the exact same ethnic and cultural background as PRC.

So you don't think that democracy works in the USA? I guess you are just like the yellow and red shirts, in that you only think democracy works if the vote goes the way you think it should since you know better than everyone else. No one said democracy is perfect or is even good, but all other forms of government are worse.

Alan, no I don't think democracy works well in the USA (not well enough to get an A grade; a C perhaps -mind you, most places would get an F). As I said ALREADY, my point is that democracy only works well when MOST of the population is well educated (and in the USA it is not). Otherwise democracy just becomes a race to convince as many idiots as you can, to vote for you before election day. And to convince the most you have to address the simple issues that the many understand. And the many, are not that smart in most countries... with the exception of those I mentioned. Thus the majority of idiots end up making the decision for all based on the little info the many idiots are able to digest... which most of the time is biased spinned (even false) information. If it were up to me, I would set up a system where you decide the weight of your vote by the amount of money you are willing to give to government (either win or lose). This way, a populist that gets 1 million people giving $1 gets as much "votes" as the candidate that convinces 1,000 people to give $ 1,000 for him. The candidate that raises the most money for the government wins. Have your usual campaign, but voting day go to the poll station and make a deposit. In current democracy a vote is cheap... just look how much the vote of an illiterate idiot is worth next to that of an accomplished lawyer; both are worth the same.

Hey Smeggy, I support your analysis of the current state of democracy... but your idea of money-based voting.. how stupid is that... ??!!?? Are you saying those with money in their hands make the better decisions for the benefit of society? They just GIVE A SHT about the benefit of society, anybody knows that...

How about just letting the tax payers vote? After all, it's their money that's going to be spent (or consumed) by government in the end.

... in America's very early years, the public funding for education was hotly debated... the argument winning the day was made (I believe) by John Adams, who argued that democracy will fail without both an educated AND a moral population... thus, free education and freedom to worship. (... will appreciate if anyone can correctly attribute the quote). ... sadly, America is fast losing both these attributes... at some point (perhaps soon, perhaps already), the US will hit the tipping point, where 51% of voters are both illiterate and/or immoral, feeding at the public trough at the expense of a minority... these guys vote... and they BREED. ... fast forward but one generation... it is a mathematical certainty that the products of these households (good apples don't come from bad barrels) will predictably support politicians who will continue to fail us, as a nation. ... I thought the late William F. Buckley, Jr. was a right wing nut case when he advocated for limiting the right to vote to people passing a means test (they paid taxes, they passed some minimal educational standard, they owned some minimum amount of assets, they own property... I forgot the actual details)... that idea is not looking so bad these days to me.

Damn Smegs.... reading Ayn Rand again are we? The problem with that is that Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates, and the Walton Family will be deciding who the next President is. What most do not recognize is that Democracy is a very messy process and the majority frequently makes mistakes. But it is also to some extent self-correcting and will over the long run provide a stable and fair basis for governance. This will maximize the ability for a smart and motivated person from a poor background to rise to the top whilst a rich, stupid, and lazy person will end up in the streets.... it happens more often than you think ...
