<Or rolling up at some 5-star joint or (worse) upmarket social function with an Isaan BG you've dressed up to the nines in the foolish hope that no-one will notice. A friend of mine who did this noticed little amiss at the time, but got some very stern words afterwards> I have never ever liked or condoned any kind of class inferiority or superiority. I have a thai wife of six years, who dresses well, walks well, looks attractive, holds her head high, speaks well and is extremely polite, except in CM2 at midnight, she also happens to be an Isaan girl, but not as you stated and Isaan bg. If I wanted to take her anywhere I would, if she received a look of disgust at being present amongst people that thought they were better than her, simply because of where and what she was born into, then they would get a very simple f_ck you, f_ck off and stick it up your f_cking arse from me. I dont give a sh_t who or what they are, they can be better people no problem, there are plenty of better people than me about, but to expect it as their right and look down and tread on other people because of it is disgusting.

Way I see it is thais can buy into their own stuff, you dont have to That's easy enough to say as a tourist - though I feel it doesn't hurt tourists anywhere to remember that they're guests on someone else's turf. Admittedly, minding your Ps & Qs is probably more important in BKK than Pattaya. The capital is not a tourist ghetto. If you live and work here, then I'm afraid you just DO have to buy into Thai stuff to some extent. The case I mentioned (the colleague going to a ritzy function with a BG in tow) led to ructions, with the boss having to field complaints from several high-level Thai contacts. An insult to the hosts, blah blah... The guy was let off as a relatively new arrival, but warned that if he pulled a stunt like that again, he'd have to go. Now, in a purely private capacity, there's nothing to stop you taking the most downmarket BG you can find to dinner at the Oriental. But what's the point? They'll get sniffy, you'll get angry, the girl will be miserable and a lousy time will be had by all. Just so YOU can make a public demonstration that your own values are the only ones that count and that the Thai view of the world is a crock of sh_t. How arrogant and bad-mannered is that? NM Actually, having quite a strongly egalitarian cast of mind, I tend to react emotionally the same way you do. I think some of the Isaan BGs I know are worth ten of some of the Hi-So types I meet professionally, let alone some of their lickspittles (I'm talking about particular individuals here, not about BGs or upmarket Thais generally). Personally, I find some Thai attitudes about bargirls, Isaanites & the lower orders in general extremely hard to take. But then I'm a Westerner. So are you. We're conditioned to think like this - take as you find & so on. Thais are conditioned to think in terms of everyone and everything being higher or lower - and this is fundamental to their view of the universe. They can't help it, it's integral to their culture, and unless you're the worst sort of cultural imperialist, I think you just have to accept this as the way it is. You don't have to like it, or incorporate it into your own values, but you do have to function in this radically different society. At any rate, I find Thai attitudes to all this (much as they set my teeth on edge sometimes) more tolerable than Westerners who simply ape them as a cheap excuse to run people down. Not that some cretins need to borrow alien excuses to trash prostitutes, the ill-educated or people with dark skins. As to practical behaviour - well, I'm happy to push the edge of the envelope a bit. I have no problem taking BGs to restaurants and hotels, even quite upmarket ones if I think the particular girl is up to it (which is much the same as saying if I think she'll be comfortable). I don't think I'd ever take a BG to really top-end places like the Oriental, though - any more than I'd assert my 'right' to dine there in a T-shirt and shorts or make out with a BG on the BTS. There comes a point when doing whatever YOU want, heedless of other people's sensitivities, just makes you an arrogant pain in the arse - and not an awful lot better than some snotty receptionist.

Everywhere you go there are social norms and accepted patterns of behaviour. You can choose to ignore those norms and patterns if you like but there may well be repercussions. It is up to you. Unless I believe in something very strongly and am prepared to face the consequences of going against the flow I usually choose to go with the flow.

Quote: from juniper on 7:18 am on Feb. 18, 2004 When I go out with local thai friend. When they see a farang with an attractive thai girl, I could see and sense a degree of contempt with hint of jealousy.
Oh! So?...... Juniper, did you sense such degree of contempt and jealousy from your Thai friends the other day when they saw me with that girl? he he he Arc, the points you make are very valid. Furthemore, examples of what you say apply also way back in the west: people from some places tend to talk a lot louder than others and in some places in the west our friends from some other places come accross as lacking class when you see them shouting accross the lobby of the Ritz in Paris; casual dress from some western countries would not be proper attire when going out at night in some other western capitals; smoking while walking is coomon in some western countries, in others it shows lack of class. We always seem to see those foreign examples of lack of class from tourists: be English tourists in Spain, of USA tourists in France, or Italians in England, etc. What I am trying to say is that it is not any one country, but the tourists. Well, some tourists. The problem is at first one of ignorance -we cannot expect people to know everything about every place they go in advance, thus some tolerance is always granted everywhere, but then.... then it moves -as you pointed out - into being classless arrogance once the person knowingly insists in disrespecting local customs and norms.

Arcadius, I agree with you totally, my opinion is based on me or someone I am with being treated like a second class citizen, or even 3rd and 4th, it is then if I am given a snotty obnoxious you should not be here attitude, you are not worthy of my company, that I would give equally back. I totally agree with behaing decently in another country and respecting their values and culture, I would not pork someone on the bts as you mentioned, but I have pushed the envelope a little on buses, taxis, beaches etc. I guess I am saying I would do what I want when I am given a sh_tty attitude first, I rarely ever do obnoxious things first hand, if I do, I expect and accept any bad response. But also when my missus is the nicest and gentlest person, except in CM2, I know she would outshine many many of the hi-so crowd, she is even better looking than many of the high-so crowd to boot and to think with her personality that makes friends with anyone anytime and she will do anything for anyone, then the upperclass sucks.

N-M, you are right, there are also many jerks in the upperclasses. Stupidity does not discriminate across the social spectrum. "Real class" is not a matter necessary related to the social ladder, but to basic principles that are common and available to most.

Have anyone of you read something about: "Just wait until 5th-8th July 2004, when Thailand hosts the Vatican's Sixth World Conference on the Pastoral Care of Tourism, addressing such issues as Environmental Degradation and Sex Tourism!!! The TV crews are salivating already." I am planning to visit BKK and Pattaya on May 20th. so I am not sure if this will ruin my trip? I mean with all the changes in the closing time and now this and my trip is to close to that date... so any imput is welcome! Thanks in advance

Jarodtaz.......as a fellow 'nadian' I suggest that you do a search and check out what members have been saying for months and months. Yes things will change but then again the more they will stay the same. There are lots of P4P variations to entertain you in BKK, so I am sure you will find enough to keep you busy. Lose that 'nadian' conservatism guy and get your ass over to BKK asap anytime.

__________________________________________ Why don't host their own conference on how to keep their own dicks under their robes and stop buggering the alter boys. f_cking Hypercritics. The press does take to task on that subject, but fortunately the US courts are draining hundreds of millions out of the coffers on this insititutional organization. I hope they go bankrupt.
