... in America's very early years, the public funding for education was hotly debated... the argument winning the day was made (I believe) by John Adams, who argued that democracy will fail without both an educated AND a moral population... thus, free education and freedom to worship.
Funding of education in the USA has primarily been at the local level since the inception of the country. I am not sure if John Adams (3rd president of the US) was involved with local politics when he said that, since there certainly was no federal funding of education in his day. Unlike separation of Church and State, there is nothing in the US Constitution regarding the right to a free education.

Although education is still primarily funded at the state or country level in the US (or privately funded), the federal government spending on education has increased over the years, but is still a small percentage of the total funding. Most public funding of schools comes from local property taxes, or from state budgets for Colleges and Universities. Other than the military academies, I don't know of any federally run schools.

With federal funding comes federal rules, and diversity of educational curriculum goes out the window. This is the not-so-obvious genius of local funding, and of the Republic itself (where most powers of government belong to the states).

The problem with that is that Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates, and the Walton Family will be deciding who the next President is.
I am absolutely certain (unless they lied) that Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison, and Bill Gates voted for Obama.

Most of the Walton family probably voted for McCain, but there may have been some exceptions (big family, with grandchildren, many of whom never worked a real job for even a day in their life).

Are you saying those with money in their hands make the better decisions for the benefit of society?

I am saying that you would vote based on how much you really cared and wanted someone to win. You really really really want the guy to win, then you would put a lot of money behind the guy. Haven't you heard "put your money where your mouth is". If your candidate looses you don't get your money back; it is still kept by the government (to be used by the winning one). You would not throw frivolously your vote to the best looking candidate or just the most charismatic.

In addition, there is a high correlation between money and education; yes, there are many idiots with money and a few smart poor, but those are outliers in the curve that amount to few statistically.

I do not worry about Buffet, Ellison and Gates voting for the same guy and deciding the election. They won't. People will care about their money and how they vote. The system would work better from earlier on. The guys that do end up winning would be really deserving ones that got there based on merit. The system would early on get rid of the populists.

magnum, I do not recognize your quote, but the founding father who worked most tirelessly on behalf of public education for everyone was Thomas Jefferson.

"This [bill] on education would [raise] the mass of the people to the high ground of moral respectability necessary to their own safety and to orderly government, and would [complete] the great object of qualifying them to secure the veritable aristoi for the trusts of government, to the exclusion of the pseudalists... I have great hope that some patriotic spirit will... call it up and make it the keystone of the arch of our government." Jefferson to John Adams, 1813

lolol......Most every founding father owned slaves, so their version of education, and equality in actuality did not include everyone, only those people that were not owned. Those that were of a different color, in their eyes, were not classed as people with rights. Everyone knew this at that time, so there was no need to explain this universally known fact.

To the best of my knowledge, all of them were born into positions as slave owners, as their fathers owned slaves that they inherited, although they may have acquired other slaves during their life. Maybe I am wrong about some of them.

Also, not all of them owned slaves. Only those who owned farms.
