The Constitution Court moved with unusual speed on Tuesday to dismiss Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and outlaw the ruling People Power party. Anti-government protesters lifted their Suvarnabhumi siege, but flights will not resume for two weeks because of damage at the Bangkok airport.
PPP leaders vowed to form another government under the Puea Thai party label. But it will be without Mr Somchai, who was banned from politics for five years.
"My duty is over. I am now an ordinary citizen," Somchai, 61, told reporters in the northern city of Chiang Mai from where he has been governing since the blockade began.
Also banned by the court was the venerable Chart Thai party and the Matchimatipataya, both key members of the coalition government.
"As the court decided to dissolve the People Power Party (PPP), therefore the leader of the party and party executives must be banned from politics for five years," said Chat Chonlaworn, head of the nine-judge court panel, in the ruling on PPP.
"The court had no other option," he said.
It is expected that the three banned parties will reunite under the Puea Thai (For Thais) party, and form a government from surviving members of parliament.
Chaovarat Charnveerakul, the first deputy prime minister, will be caretaker prime minister.
Government chief whip Withaya Buranasiri said a proposal may be made for the House of Representatives to convene a session on Dec 8 to elect a new prime minister.
The court decision banned the parties and all their executives because of cheating in the Dec 23, 2007, election. But the decision has no immediate effect on other MPs or their ability to form a government.
At Suvarnabhumi airport, blockaded one week ago, there were scenes of jubilation by the yellow-clad People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), whose goal was to topple the government.
"As of this moment the PAD has allowed flights to take off and land immediately, both passenger and cargo flights," senior PAD member Somkiat Pongpaiboon told reporters at the airport.
All equipment at the airport would have to be checked over before full airport operations could resume, he said.
But the head of Airports of Thailand said that Suvarnabhumi international airport will remain closed to passenger flights until at least Dec 15 because of the disruption caused by anti-government protesters.
A statement said the closure of the airport for passenger flights "is extended to 6pm on Dec 15."
The statement by acting AoT director Serirat Prasutanont said the country's main airport has lost more $10 million from the week-long closure forced by the PAD protesters.
At the Stock Exchange, shares dropped after the verdict, as investors fear even more political chaos. The SET Index lost 3.60, or 0.9 percent, to close at 387.32, its lowest since Nov. 24.
The government officially cancelled the Asean summit planned for next week. The foreign ministry said it might be held in Thailand in March.

The verdict came amid a confrontation between Somchai, the brother-in-law of ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, and anti-government protesters occupying Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.
Somchai was elected by parliament on September 17 after his predecessor, Samak Sundaravej, was forced from office last month for appearing in television cooking shows.
The judge, wearing a black robe with a scarlet collar, read the order live on national television.
"No matter whether you are satisfied or not with the verdict, we ask you to accept it," he said.
The verdict said the party must be disbanded because PPP executives had been convicted of vote fraud after elections in December 2007.
"Although some party executives had no knowledge of the election fraud, the law stipulates clearly... the party must scrutinise its executives thus the party cannot deny responsibility," Chat said.
The court banned 109 PPP, Chart Thai and Matchimathipataya executives from politics for five years. โ€” (AFP)

Just out of curiosity, does anyone actually think there was election fraud in the December 2007 elections (other than pandering to certain constituencies) ?
My guess is that if the same criteria of what constitutes fraudulent elections as claimed by the PAD was applied in the USA, it would look like the Reign of Terror from the French Revolution all over again.
One thing I noticed about both Thailand and the Philippines is that demonstrating is the national pastime in both countries, and they prefer a bloodless coup to an election. As we all know, both nations have something else in common that is dear to the members of this forum, but I am not sure if there is any connection.

If the country seems to be run by a bunch of 2-year mentality you are correct. Just wait in the near future articles will be written on Why Thai's do not understand why tourism is down.
Serirat Pasutanond, acting president of Airports of Thailand (AOT), said earlier that Suvarnabhumi could be officially reopened to passenger flights on December 15, but after the PAD began to vacate the premises, he said resumption of services would depend on inspections of the extent of damage to systems and facilities.
No shit Idiots!
I prediit that authorities will find PAD members hid away on the upper floors of the airport same time next year, unshowered and unshaven still wearing yellow and ready to fight the war!

Yeah, no shit -- what amazes me (well, not really) how all these presumed professionals shoot their mouths off before having any facts - claiming the airport will resume flights in 24 hours, and such -- and only later discovering that they will need to be recertified. December 15th as a possible date, while possible, is also overly optimistic.
Let's even assume that the airport opens in a reasonable amount of time - they seem to further labor under the delusion that all the tourists that were supposed to be coming to Thailand are waiting with baited breath to jump on the first available planes to rush back to Thailand- which they won't.
Those who had planned to fly here, either cancelled, or booked alternate destinations -- those who had Christmas / NY plans, most likely booked alternate destinations as well, making most likely for a pretty 'high' season that clocks in at pretty 'low'.
Case in point - I had plans for Christmas and New Year's in Bangkok, but will most likely just go visit a friend in Hong Kong instead, and alternatively fly in a girl or two to visit me over there, thus making sure to spend my money in HK, and not Thailand. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
It'll be interesting to see how desperately Thai 'analysts' will try to make it appear as if everything is fine, until they throw in the towel.

My mate just booked a flight to Suvarnabhumi airport from Sydney on Thai for 8th December. Another friend booked a flight from Sydney for tomorrow that is scheduled to land at Au Tapao. So lets see what happens. My family are due on 22nd on Qantas but not confirmed as the Aussie government is yet to make a decision on when Qantas can resume flights.
