I have seen other opinions on the web, suggesting that the king is helpless to react and that his not feeling good to deliver his traditional birthday speech was forced uppon him. There are those that are against the king and may want to destroy his image in the eyes of the Thai people and the world. Those who say they are for the king (the yellow shirt) are the same those who say they are representing the Thai people. If you do not think they represent the Thai people and that most thais wont agree to the PAD, why do you believe they represent the Thai King? It is all their own interest and purpose behind such actions.

The "protest" is of paid protstors whom earn a high daily "allowance" (I've heard its 1000 bhat a day if there are no bombs or risks, higher if there are incidents). For most Thais, 1000 bhat a day is a lot of money and they just come to a job of protesting.

I have learned that in Thailand (and other places) not what you see is what it is, there are a lot of under the surface problems that most non Thais don't know.

Long live the king!

We have just had a mini Suvarnabhumi type protest at London stansted which closed the airport for 5 hours.

Some tree-huggers broke through the perimeter fence and took their own fence panels to the taxi-way and chained themselves to the fencing.

Only 39 arrested last time I heard, the police said they couldn't just drag the protesters off, they had to treat them with sensitivty.
Bit too cold for yellow or red shirts though
