Ok, now for some boost to tourism amid all the gloom If people are wondering whether to cancel that trip to Thailand, well, I think there is no real need to. Bangkok, away from Silom and Rajaprasong, is normal and full of life and business as usual. Malls are open, and so are bars and pubs and all activity is normal and safe like any other day IF YOU STAY AWAY from the two hot spots. Yes, staying away from Patpong is a tall order and takes away half the fun to many (including me). But there is life and fun elsewhere. The TGs really do not seem keen to talk about all this and would much rather hook their hands in your arms and steer you clear of this "unnecessary talk" and towards more interesting things like that lay waiting to be had. So keep coming. Don't give too much weightage to all those embassy advisories and zealous media reports that hype the scene and make it seem like a fight for democracy which it most certainly isn't. Abhisit and his government ain't done any harm to the poor farm people. It's not that only one man cared for the poor farm people and the present government does not. As supporters of the Thai economy the least we can do is to keep coming here to make small amends for the ongoing ruin of the earnings, business and livelihood of ordinary Thais. At the malls your heart would bleed to see the girls offer you attractive deals because there are no shoppers now. A nice cotton shirt that I picked up at a fixed price of Baht 199 a year back is seeing a price of Baht 160 now. Platinum and Pratunam are full of Baht 100 price tags ! So come here and spend. No body wants to hurt you. They just wish you would come. All the recent inconvenience to travellers was caused by Iceland's volcano. If the world's airlines could decide to resume flights despite all that initial talk of unsafe ash in the atmosphere that could endanger thousands of lives, then you would be well justified in treating all those advisories against travelling to LOS with equal disdain Danger lurks everywhere today. You are probably safer in Bangkok.

Kaymanx's post is absolutely true. I walk through siam sq everyday from my place to my job, and there isn't any problem at all. the reds are dug in at this point, but mostly are just lounging around listening to the blaring (bleating??) voice of the leader on stage at the time. The main downside is thai girls dont want to come to Sim Sq due to the red bulls, most thinking even MBK is closed, which it has never been for a whole day. The BTS shutdown was inconvenient last night, and traffic sucked. But that didnt stop me from going by taxi to ekkamai to meet some chick. The danger now, IMO, is being in the wrong place at the wrong time....So just choose your steps with care. Aslo, today's BTS service (per BKK Post) : The Bangkok Mass Transit System, the operator of the BTS skytrain, has rescheduled weekend train services following Thursday's grenade blasts at Sala Daeng station. Only five stations on the Silom route will be open - Chong Nonsi, Surasak, Saphan Taksin, Krung Thon Buri and Wong Wian Yai. Trains will run from 6am to 7pm. All Sukhumvit line stations will be open from 6am to 7pm.

Poskat, you nailed it : "The danger now, IMO, is being in the wrong place at the wrong time....So just choose your steps with care." Wednesday was my last night in Bangkok and I thought of going to Patpong although I had seen heavily armed troops the previous night. My choice was based on news reports that said the Silom rally had been called off. Boy, what a scene! My cab drove straight into the action with two hostile sides facing each other, the road littered with what must have been projectiles of any kind that came to hand. A young woman from the Dusit Thani side crossed the tense road waving a Thai national flag and, after going over to the Red side in an apparent act of defiance, tease and challenge, walked calmly back to her side. All this while my cab, like the rest of the traffic, was held up on the frontline and I found myself thinking of the possible headlines the next day if my cab were to be hit by a hail of gunfire. Wrong place at the wrong time. I also wonder if the civil tensions, and the loss of business and earnings, is driving Thais towards despair. Early this week, at or adjacent to Platinum Mall, I came across what I gathered from onlookers was a suicide jump from one of the top floors.

People have been killing themselves long before political turmoil.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 24 April 2010 :- UDD says army attack likely ================= Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had this morning ordered army commander-in-chief Anupong Paojinda to use force to crack down on red-shirt protesters, co-leader of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship Jatuporn Prompan said. “Mr Abhisit told Gen Anupong that he would not dissolve House of Representatives or negotiate with UDD leaders. He claimed that the information was provided by a “watermelon soldier” at the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (Cres).
